Hawaii is a beach-lovers paradise. There are numerous clean wide beaches, some with white sand, some black, some red or green. There are plenty of opportunities to go whale watching, swim with the porpoises, scuba, snorkel, windsurf or deep water fishing. Of course, Hawaii is the birthplace of surfing, and you will find surfers everywhere, and many chances to try it out. Many surfers maintain that Waikiki Beach is the best surfing beach anywhere.
There is more to Hawaii than beaches and water sports, though. The other must-do for a real Hawaiian experience is the luau. A luau is an outdoor cookout with pork cooked in a pit, beef and fish wrapped in leaves and cooked over coals, and poi, a traditional starch dish. Of course, no meal on the islands is complete without fresh fruit, which grows in abundance on the islands. And to finish the evening, song and dance. A luau will include hula dancers, who carry on a long tradition of story telling through dance, and musicians who will play songs on traditional instruments. Some more elaborate luaus will include Samoan fire dancers, and Tahitian dancers.
There are many historic sites on the islands. A tour with an informative guide would be a good way to learn the history and background of Hawaii. It has been a crossroads of the Pacific for centuries, and settled by many diverse populations; Chinese, Japanese, Portugeuse and Filipino have settled in this state over time, and contributed to the culture that exists today. One can see some of the European influence in the palaces that were built for royalty in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Lahaina Historic Trail on the island of Maui traces through some of the layers of history that influenced island life. On the trail is a church built by Christian missionaries, and a temples built by Chinese and Japanese settlers.
Visiting a volcano is an adventure that should not be passed up. It is one of the few places in the world where active volcanoes are easily accessible. There are three active volcanoes on the islands, and a great place to visit one is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, on the big island. There is an interpretive centre, and trails leading to the volcano. For flights to Hawaii, check out Delta Airlines. They have been serving Hawaii for a long time, and offer many flights to that destination. You won't be sorry you spent time in this island paradise.
