Battle of the Business Class Flights - New Girl in the Air

After much deliberation, I booked business class award tickets for my trip to Morocco. ?I had a really hard time deciding between coach & business class (after all, that 20,000-mile premium would buy me a reduced mileage award making the opportunity cost pretty high), and in the end, I?m glad I chose business class?if only to satisfy my curiosity and confirm my suspicions that from now on, coach will be adequate for all my European travel.

I?m not much of a fan of photos of hot towels or bowls of nuts, so I?ll save your sanity by not giving you the minute-by-minute report on my flights. ?If you?ve got specific questions, though, ask away. ?Instead, I?ll be assigning a winner to each aspect of my flight to give an overview of three airlines in one post. ?This isn?t exactly a fair competition since I didn?t have equal routings on each airline, so keep that in mind.

I flew American Airlines on my overnight transatlantic flight from New York to London, British Airways on a roughly 3.5-hour flight from London to Marrakech (considered ?intra-European? service), and Iberia Airlines on my daytime transatlantic flight from Madrid to New York.

Best Lounge

Winner: Iberia Airlines

Over the course of our trip, we tried the Admirals? Club in JFK, the British Airways lounge at London Gatwick, and the Iberia Velazquez lounge in Madrid. ?While I was thrilled with the speed of wi-fi at JFK and enjoyed the food options at LGW, Iberia had the full package. ?In addition to a decent buffet of snacks and light meals, plentiful drink options, free wifi, there were also computers and printers for use, showers, TVs in some areas, and bests of all, a relaxation/nap room that looked like I might actually want to use it on a layover.

Best Seat

Winner: American Airlines

The problem with reading too many trip reports before going on vacation is that you go into your travels with a pre-conceived notion of what to expect. ?I?ve never flown international business class in my life and assumed I was in trouble from the outright because American Airlines has angled-flat seats. ?In reality, I had no problems sleeping on AA?s seats at all and would consider another angled-flat seat in the future. ? Iberia?s lie-flats were also fine and I?d happily recommend them, but there was something about AA?s pre-set ?position #1? that cradled me so comfortably while not sleeping that AA wins. ?Sorry, British Airways, but your short-haul seating didn?t stand a chance in this category.

The Winning Seat

Best Service

Winner: British Airways

British Airways was the only airline that seemed to have genuine, friendly service on my flights. ?Iberia was great with frequent service but a bit robotic. ?American had downright snarly and inattentive service to the point of frustration. ?Our attendant on British Airways, Emma, was more than happy to help out with any request and was the perfect example of service with a smile, helping to make our short flight fly by. ?I was surprised to see that even on our short flight we were provided hot towels before our meal, pillows, blankets, and more.

Best Food

Winner: British Airways

I really expected Iberia to be the winner of this category with its Spanish cuisine, but British Airways won the best food category by a landslide. ?Ironically, they were out of the beef stroganoff option I intended on ordering for lunch and I was ?stuck? with the lamb dopiaza, which turned out to be fantastic. ?No, it didn?t look appetizing. ?No, I didn?t think I?d be happy eating lamb and lentils before spending time in Morocco eating?more lamb and lentils?but it was really quite delicious. ?No, it wasn?t a multi-course affair like on AA or Iberia, but a simple, quality meal beats a poorly-executed fancy meal any day in my book.

Hard to go wrong with lamb and beer

Best Drinks

Winner: Iberia Airlines

Fact: It is impossible to drink quickly enough to keep up with Iberia?s drink service without floating away. ?I tried, my husband tried, and we both failed. ?I started with a flute of pre-departure cava and went on from there to wine, water, wine,?dessert wine, coffee, wine, a gin and tonic (except they didn?t leave room for the tonic!), wine, and just to round things out, a final glass of wine before landing. ?And that?s after the self-serve bar in the lounge? ?They win on quality, too, not just quantity, completely beating out AA?s stingy drink service and BA?s boring options.

Cava was just the beginning...

Best Entertainment

Winner: American Airlines

Poor British Airways? short-haul service didn?t stand a chance against seatback options with both AA and Iberia. ?AA?s selection of movies and TV shows was larger and exactly suited to my preferences, meaning I had more to choose from than I had time. ?On the flipside, Iberia had exactly one movie that appealed to me, leaving a lot of free time to entertain myself on an eight-hour flight. ?Additionally, American Airlines offers noise-cancelling headphones for your use during the flight, making it even easier to enjoy that entertainment.

Best Amenity Kit

Winner: American Airlines

On long flights, a few amenities can really make a difference in your comfort, so I really appreciated that both American and Iberia offered amenity kits so I didn?t have to dig through my bag to find my own personal items. ?Both were completely adequate, with standard items like moisturizer, lip balm, toothbrush & toothpaste, eye shade, ear plugs, socks, refreshing towlette, and comb. ?So why does AA win? ?For one thing, I?m biased to the American brands they used (like Colgate toothpaste), but they also had a nicer bag and scored bonus points for including a pen and tissues.

I?m not going to declare an overall winner, though based on my short experience with British Airways, I think they?d have a fantastic transatlantic service once you factor in an internationally-configured seating arrangement rather than their short-haul product. ?Iberia was also a surprisingly pleasant experience despite the age and condition of their aircraft, though given their limited entertainment options, I might recommend that one particularly for any overnight segments. ?Unfortunately, I think I had bad luck with American Airlines simply due to my flight attendant having a bad day (or at least, I?ll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she?s normally more attentive), so I?d be willing to give them another chance since there were certainly parts of the experience I enjoyed.

All in all, my next European adventure will be in coach, but I did enjoy having some more room to spread out so maybe another business-class flight will be in my future for more distant regions of the world?we?ll see what 2013 brings!

Wall Street tries to see past 'cliff'; outlook clouded

18 hrs.

As investors gaze across the "fiscal cliff," some see a better economy on the far side, making stocks and risk assets more appealing and bonds less so in the year ahead.

But there are many caveats to that scenario and some of them will be decided in the next few days as politicians struggle to strike a deal that would avert a fall off the "fiscal cliff." The cliff is the double-barreled blow to the economy from the reversal of dozens of tax breaks and the onset of automatic spending cuts, agreed as a solution to the contentious 2011 debt- ceiling debate.

Congress meets Sunday evening and may consider the latest proposals.

Stocks were spooked in the past week by the lack of movement in discussions between Congress and President Barack Obama. As the market closed Friday, the absence of new developments during talks underway at the White House provided a void for selling. The Dow fell 1.2 percent to 12,938, giving it a loss of 1.9 percent for the week. The S&P 500 fell 1.1 percent to 1402, for a one week loss of 1.9 percent. The Nasdaq lost 2 percent for the week to 2960.

Congressional leaders late Friday left the White House without a deal, setting the stage for a weekend of raw nerves. Obama said he was still optimistic the Senate leadership could come up with a deal that would?pass both houses, but he also laid out a second plan for a straight up-or-down?vote on middle class tax cuts if they can't reach an agreement.

The president repeated that strategy in an exclusive interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday in which he scolded House Republicans for not having come to an agreement sooner.

"They say that their biggest priority is making sure that we deal with the deficit in a serious way, but the way they're behaving is that their only priority is making sure that tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans are protected," Obama said. "That seems to be their only overriding, unifying theme."

Obama said if Congress failed to agree on a deal and if the straight up-or-down vote was blocked, the first bill introduced in the new year would propose a cut in taxes for the?middle class.?

"Now I think that over the next 48 hours, my hope is that people recognize that, regardless of partisan differences, our top priority has to be to make sure that taxes on middle-class families do not go up. That would hurt our economy badly," Obama said.?

He warned that if there was?no deal by Jan. 1, it could hurt financial markets.?

"What's been holding us back is the dysfunction here in Washington," he said. "And if people start seeing that on January 1st this problem still hasn't been solved, that we haven't seen the kind of deficit reduction that we could have had had the Republicans been willing to take the deal that I gave them, if they say that people's taxes have gone up, which means consumer spending is going to be depressed, then obviously that's going to have an adverse reaction in the markets."

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) dismissed the president's criticism, and pointed the finger of blame at Obama.

"Republicans made every effort to reach the 'balanced' deficit agreement that the president promised the American people, while the president has continued to insist on a package skewed dramatically in favor of higher taxes that would destroy jobs," Boehner said in a statement reacting to the 'Meet the Press' interview.

"We've been reasonable and responsible. The president is the one who has never been able to get to 'yes,'" Boehner said.?

Obama: GOP's insistence on halting tax hikes for the wealthy is blocking 'cliff' deal

Stock futures fell sharply after the market closed Friday.?

"You could tell a lot of people were very skittish about their trades," said Patrick Kernan of Cardinal Capital. "Everybody is fearful of what exposure they have right now. Right now, we're thinking if they reach a deal we go back to around where we were a week ago, right around 1440" on the S&P 500. If there's no deal, "we think it goes down 30 to 50 points."

Kernan, who trades S&P 500 options, said the market was swarmed by investors seeking portfolio protection Friday.?

"The other side of this thing from an investment standpoint, is if there's a deal, I don't know what the number is but is it a five-percent rally from here? Is it a three-percent rally?" said?said James Paulsen, chief investment strategist at Wells Capital Management.? "There's risk on both sides of the trade, and I think that's been helping keep this reaction more muted than it otherwise might be."

"The cliff isn't December 31. The real cliff is somewhere down the line when the tax bite and spending cuts start to hurt," he said. "The most optimistic agreement was not that we got this done before the deadline. The most optimistic was we get it done right on deadline, and I think it was fully expected it would get really ugly right before that?the other reality is if it doesn't get done until mid-January it's not going to hurt anything."

Paulsen said the market's anxiety will increase the longer it goes on. "If we go over, the market reaction will start to build?I don't think it will fall apart if we go over. I think if we start to get to the second half of January, I think they'll get way more concerned."

Wait, There's More
Besides the action on Capitol Hill, there is the December employment report Friday and some other key data to look forward to in the week ahead. That includes Thursday's December car sales and chain-store sales and Wednesday's ISM manufacturing data. The minutes of the Fed's last meeting are also expected Wednesday afternoon.

But the outcome of the cliff discussion and congressional votes will be what drives markets in the week and months ahead, and what will ultimately decide whether the U.S. can be a driver of the global economy or a drag on it in 2013.

"I don't think the story is over yet," said Citigroup economist Steven Wieting. "We all expected agony . It just seems we keep adding to it."

"There's compromise that's needed and now seemed like a good time, but they already let the window substantially pass. The opportunity to have a really big framework has passed," Wieting added.

He?described a another possible scenario. "They're going to completely leave the debt ceiling out of this, and they're going to leave any signs of structural reform out of this. Then we have a deal that includes future cliff dates. That would leave uncertainty in play."

Yet, analysts and economists also see a possible optimistic outcome, where the cliff is fixed, at least in part, either by New Year's or several days later, and the debt ceiling and remaining issues are dealt with in the first part of the year. If that's the case, it might unleash economic growth, as consumer and business confidence improve.

"I think the global economy is going to surprise on the upside," said Ed Keon, portfolio manager with Quantitative Management Associates. Keon believes Congress will make a deal to avoid the cliff, and he sees gains in the U.S. economy as well as improvement in the European debt crisis and a pickup in the emerging world. "I think in the European situation, time is on our side and everyday things look a little better."

He also sees the U.S. ending the year with stronger growth. "It's hard to believe Washington would want to hurt the economy with malice of foresight," he said. "Doing a small deal will be viewed that they might be able to do a bigger deal."

Kind of a Small Deal
"We'll get a deal," said Steven Stanley, chief economist at Pierpont Securities. "It will be a small deal that will address some of the more onerous aspects of the cliff. Tax rates, they're going to have to address the AMT, and they're going to have to do something with sequestration cuts,?either delay them or rejigger them. I think they'll probably do something on state and dividend tax rates, the Medicare doc fix and they'll probably extend the unemployment benefits."

It's the bigger deal, on the debt ceiling, that will be most difficult and most important in terms of the longer term strength of the economy. Treasury secretary Tim Geithner warned this past week that the U.S. will reach the debt ceiling limit Monday, but that the Treasury can make some adjustments to keep the government funded for a couple months while Congress works out a deal. The hope is that Congress would find a way to deal with bigger tax reform and entitlement spending issues as part of that debate.

Forget the 'fiscal cliff," the debt ceiling is much scarier

Avoiding the cliff, even with scaled back tax increases,?will not leave the economy unscathed but it should not trigger the recession expected if the cliff were hit. "Basically if we let the payroll tax expire it's going to blunt consumer spending in the beginning of the year, even if we know about it," Stanley said. "The upper income tax increases are not a free lunch either. It's substantially lower than the full cliff."

One of the most public points of contention is at what income level, Bush-era tax cuts are reversed. Both Republicans and Democrats agree tax rates should remain the same for 98 percent of taxpayers, but the disagreement is over taxing the rich and that's what the Senate leadership will have to tackle this weekend.

Obama did not specify on "Meet the Press" which income level he would accept. He has consistently promoted $250,000 as the dividing line between those who would continue to benefit from Bush-era tax cuts and those who would see their taxes increase. But the figure has been a bargaining chip in the negotiations.

The economy could handle that and move on, Wieting said. "If it's a fiscal tightening between 1 and 1.5 percent of GDP, the economy would absorb that in a discrete way and probably move on to stronger growth in the second half of the year. It could be better. It could be clearer. It could be sooner," he said.?

Wieting said, however, the more unresolved issues and pushed-out deadlines there are, the worse it will be for the economy because business spending would remain constrained.

Here's what happens to you if we go over the fiscal cliff

Wieting expects growth in the beginning of the year of about 1 percent, and assuming a resolution of the cliff and debt ceiling issues,?growth could accelerate to 3 percent by the end of the year.

The economic data this week should continue to show the same slow growth in employment, but possibly stronger auto sales and improved manufacturing. Economic data, particularly housing-related data, has been largely better than expected.

Stanley expects the December nonfarm payrolls to be about the same as November's 146,000. "I have 150,000 but that includes a couple of special factors that I think will push the number up a little bit," said Stanley. One of those factors is the addition of couriers, temporarily hired to deliver holiday gifts. Last year, that category gained 40,000 in December, and lost the same amount in January, he said.

Fiscal cliff: 48 hours to go and Senate negotiations slow to a crawl

A late-breaking Republican demand to cut Social Security benefits through an alternative method of calculating inflation adjustments has put negotiations at an impasse.

By Gail Russell Chaddock,?Staff writer / December 30, 2012

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) speaks with the media as he leaves the Senate Chamber Sunday afternoon. Efforts to prevent the economy from tumbling over a "fiscal cliff" stalled as Democrats and Republicans remained at loggerheads over a deal that would prevent taxes for all Americans from rising on New Year's Day.

UPDATE: Senate majority leader Harry Reid told the Senate at 5:48 p.m. Sunday that Senate Republicans have dropped their call for Social Security benefit cuts, or ?chain? CPI, as part of a deal to avert the fiscal cliff. There is still ?significant distance? between the two sides, he said, but ?there is still time left to reach an agreement." The Senate will come in at 11 a.m. Monday, when the majority leader expects to make "further announcements."

Fiscal cliff negotiations hit a wall late Saturday night, but it took Senate Republicans about 15 hours to figure that out.

Typically, 11th hour negotiations are marked by a flurry of offers and counteroffers, all-night staff negotiations, phone calls, and huddles in back rooms littered with pizza boxes and diet soda cans.

That?s not happening, say staff close to the negotiations. Senate Republicans made their last offer about 7:10 p.m. Saturday. Democratic staff for majority leader Harry Reid promised a response by 10 a.m. on Sunday. Nothing came.

Instead, word leaked to the press that a late-breaking GOP demand to cut Social Security benefits through an alternative method of calculating inflation adjustments as ?chained? CPI [Consumer Price Index] had put negotiations at an impasse. It was a poison pill, a show-stopper, Democratic aides told reporters.

2012 enters the record books. Were you paying attention? A news quiz.

President Obama first proposed the idea in negotiations last spring with House Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio for a comprehensive deal on the debt ceiling and deficit reduction. But it?s anathema to many Senate liberals.

?Social Security has nothing to do with deficit reduction,? said Sen. Bernard Sanders (I) of Vermont, after the talks stalled on Sunday. ?The idea of Republicans asking for cuts for Social Security and cuts for programs for disabled veterans while at the same time protecting the wealthiest people in this country is totally outrageous and I?m glad that Senator Reid said no.?

But GOP staff close to the negotiations say that Reid or his staff never conveyed that view back to Republicans.

?If they have a problem with that piece, we are encouraging them to resubmit an offer with it,? says a GOP aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity. ?But all we heard is that the majority leader would not be countering.?

?There is no single issue that remains an impossible sticking point,? said Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell in a floor speech before party caucus meetings to brief senators at 3 p.m. ?The sticking point appears to be a willingness, an interest or frankly the courage to close the deal.?

Standing side by side on the Senate floor, Senator Reid responded: ?I have had a number of conversations with the president, and at this stage we?re not able to make a counteroffer.?

?Perhaps as the day wears on, I will be able to,? he added. ?I will say this: I think that the Republican leader has shown absolutely good faith. It?s just that we are apart on some pretty big issues.?

If Senate leaders fail to reach an agreement, the Senate is expected to take up on Monday President Obama?s proposal for a stripped down agreement that would extend Bush-era tax rates for all incomes below $250,000 and extend unemployment rates at the current 99 weeks.

But such a measure would also have to pass the House, where many GOP conservatives are strongly committed to opposing all tax hikes. Last week, Speaker Boehner was forced to pull his own ?Plan B? proposal to extend current tax rates for all incomes below $1 million, after opposition within GOP ranks.?

?I still can?t believe they won?t get something done given the perilous place this leaves our country,? said Sen. Olympia Snowe (R) of Maine, after the floor exchange between the two leaders.

?But the only thing Congress is predictable about is waiting until the very last hour,? she added.

Ag secretary sees common ground on gun control

(AP) ? Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the Newtown school shootings have changed the gun control debate and that rural America is ready to be part of a national conversation that he believes could bring people together.

Vilsack says the debate has to start with respect for the Second Amendment right to bear arms and a recognition that hunting is a way of life for millions of Americans.

But Vilsack said that the nation has reached "a different circumstance" in the gun control debate. It will take time, but it's now "potentially a unifying conversation," he said. President Barack Obama recognizes that changes to gun laws can't just be decreed from Washington but must come from the "grassroots up."

Vilsack was interviewed Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

ATLANTA ? A 7-year-old pageant contestant from a tiny town in Middle Georgia became a worldwide celebrity, and big-name politicians froIm opposing parties united behind a transportation tax that fell flat with voters. From politics to pop culture, Georgia's top news stories in 2012 offered something for everyone.

The reality show "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" was a ratings winner in 2012. The show capitalized on Southern stereotypes and the oversized personality of Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson, a beauty pageant regular; her mother, June Shannon; and their rural Georgia family. Some critics said the show mocked small-town life while others insisted the series showed a loving family who didn't let outside opinions bother them. The show was a breakout hit for TLC, and residents of McIntyre told The Associated Press in September that it put their town on the map.

The story of a metro Atlanta woman fighting for her life after contracting a rare, flesh-eating disease was one of the most inspirational.

Necrotizing fasciitis took the limbs of 24-year-old Aimee Copeland -- and nearly took her life -- but it didn't take her spirit. Much of Georgia and the nation rallied behind Copeland, a University of West Georgia student from Snellville, who contracted the infection when she suffered a deep gash to one of her legs during a zip lining accident. Her hands, left leg and right foot were amputated at a hospital in Augusta, and she spent two months in a rehabilitation center in Atlanta learning to move and care for herself again. Once the surgeries were over and she received prosthetic limbs to replace the ones she lost, Copeland appeared on Katie Couric's television show and said her infection and inspirational recovery left her with a new appreciation for life.

Baseball fans this year came to terms with the retirement of a seven-time All-Star player who spent his entire major league career with the Atlanta Braves.

After 19 years and three trips to the World Series, third baseman Chipper Jones announced plans in March to retire at the end of the season. Jones, 40, was part of the 1995 team that beat the Cleveland Indians in the World Series.

His career ended in early October during a one-game wild card playoff against the St. Louis Cardinals. Despite the Braves facing elimination from the postseason, fans gave Jones a standing ovation as he waved his helmet before his last at-bat in the ninth inning.

In the world of politics, a failed tax referendum showed that bipartisan backing doesn't always translate to support from constituents.

Voters in July rejected a penny sales tax to pay for transportation projects in nine of 12 regions in Georgia, including in metro Atlanta. The referendum was years in the making at the legislative level, and many lawmakers touted the choice as one of local control for communities.

Supporters of the measure included Republican Gov. Nathan Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, a Democrat, who appealed to voters in the run-up to the election. They tied the tax to Georgia's economic future and promised the infrastructure projects would ease traffic congestion for frustrated commuters. An unlikely coalition -- including tea party members, the state NAACP and the Sierra Club -- blasted the plan as not only the heftiest tax proposal in state history, but as a false strategy that failed to encourage smart growth.

Former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel may have turned a national controversy into a political opportunity after resigning as vice president for public policy at Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Handel found herself in a media firestorm when the organization stripped funding for Planned Parenthood. Handel resigned in February, saying the issue was consumed by politics.

In "Planned Bullyhood," a book she released in September, Handel portrayed Planned Parenthood as an aggressive, partisan organization that was willing to weaken Komen to further a liberal political agenda. The controversy could be a political boon for Handel, who is said to be considering challenging fellow Republican U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss in 2014. The Planned Parenthood flap may have helped bolster her conservative credentials if she does decide to run for office.

Some of the issues at the heart of Georgia's top news stories this year were left unresolved. The cliffhangers from 2012 promise to make 2013 interesting.

The monthlong trial of Hemy Neuman that ended with his conviction in March in the slaying of Russell Sneiderman attracted national attention. Sneiderman's wife, Andrea, worked for Neuman. Lawyers on both sides suggested an affair between the two, and said she manipulated Neuman into killing her husband outside a day care in suburban Atlanta.

Sneiderman was arrested in August and spent several weeks in jail until she was released on bond. Sneiderman is under house arrest until her trial, which is expected to happen next year.

Michael Adams, president of the University of Georgia, announced his retirement in May, and said he would continue as a faculty member with the university after June 2013. Adams will have served as university president for 16 years. Among other things, the university's enrollment grew to 35,000 students, the endowment nearly tripled and medical and engineering programs took shape under his watch.

A 21-person search committee is currently looking for candidates to replace Adams, but many say his tenure in Athens will be a tough act to follow.

Executions in Georgia were effectively put on hold when the state Supreme Court in July stayed the execution of Warren Lee Hill, who was sentenced to death in the 1990 killing of a fellow inmate while serving a life sentence for the murder of his girlfriend. The high court gave itself time to review a challenge filed by Hill's defense lawyers, who said state corrections officials didn't follow the proper administrative procedure in switching its execution protocol from a three-drug combination to a single-drug injection.

Hill's lawyers said the change was not preceded by a 30-day notice period as required by the Georgia Administrative Procedure Act. The state argued the lethal injection protocol is part of the Department of Corrections' standing operating procedures, which can be changed by the department's commissioner without additional steps.

The Supreme Court heard arguments from both sides in November, but hasn't issued a ruling in the case.

Real Estate Investing with REITs

Real estate can make an interesting addition to almost any portfolio. However, few of us have the large amounts of capital needed to buy a property. And, in the current climate, it can be difficult to get approval for a loan to buy up property. Fortunately, there are alternative investments that allow you to become a real estate investor without having to overcome those two hurdles. One option is to invest in real estate related stocks, and another is to invest in REITs.

commercial real estate

What are REITs?

A Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) allows you to invest in a variety of real estate related investments. It?s designed to do for real estate what mutual funds do for stocks. However, unlike a mutual fund, a REIT can be listed on a public stock exchange. A REIT can be can be a corporation, an association, or an actual trust. The organization acts as an investment agent.

REITs can hold a variety of investments. They can actually own different types of income-producing property, residential and/or commercial, or even finance real estate transactions. REITs are structured in such a way that they can avoid some income taxes in the United States. In order to qualify, though, a REIT has to distribute at least 90% of its taxable income to investors. This means that the dividends paid out by a REIT can be quite generous. There are private REITs and public REITs. Most ordinary investors are likely to have more success investing in public REITs.

Additionally, it?s possible to diversify your REIT holdings geographically. There are international REITs, as well as domestic REITs. You can look for REITs that specialize in one type of real estate, or choose one that has a variety of different types of real estate. Consider what you think is most likely to provide consistent returns over time.

When choosing a REIT, you want to consider the net asset value, as well as the funds from operations and the adjusted funds from operations. It?s important to carefully consider what you choose in order to get the best possible outcome for your investment.

Advantages of REITs

The biggest advantage of the REIT is that you have the opportunity to add real estate to your investment portfolio without needing a large amount of capital. Additionally, the dividend payout can provide you with a source of income. REITs are also relatively easy to buy and sell on a stock exchange. They are more liquid than actually buying property, and you don?t tie up your money in the same way.

Risks of REITs

As you might imagine, though, there are risks involved with investing in REITs. Because they are tied to real estate, many of them lost a great deal of share value after the financial crisis of 2008. While some are showing signs of recovery, the reality is that there is always the risk of loss. If the real estate market suffers, so does the REIT. If you invest in a REIT that specializes in residential mortgages, and there are a high number of defaults, then your investment loses value.

Additionally, if you rely too heavily on the dividends for income, you might be in trouble if the value drops and the REIT stops making as much money. In some cases, particularly when you invest in a private REIT, you run into the possibility that you might not be able to sell as readily as you would like. Make sure that you understand the liquidity of the REIT before you invest.

Bottom Line

Before you invest, make sure you understand the risks involved, and consider what portion of your portfolio you want in real estate related investments. If you are looking for a way to add a little diversity to your portfolio, with the help of real estate, a REIT can be worth considering. However, carefully think about your risk tolerance, and be sure you understand your target asset allocation. As always, consider your investment goals avoid investing too much in any one asset class.

Moog Music tacks on Grateful Dead expansion pack to Animoog 2.0 (video)

Late last week, Moog Music rolled out version 2.0 of its Animoog synthesizer app for Apple's slate. Now, the Asheville, North Carolina outfit is adding a truckload of new sounds less than a week after the initial release. The Grateful Dead Expansion Pack is now available for the iPad software, touting 82 presets and 45 timbres broken down into ensemble, percussion and vocal groupings. Each piece of the add-on was taken from a February 1968 performance at the Carousel Ballroom and optimized for the Animoog platform. "We're not simply providing samples from the Grateful Dead's body of work, rather we've distilled the essence of notes and phrases in a different way to transform these performances into new instruments -- new voices," says Cyril Lance, Moog's Chief Engineer. The $4.99 in-app purchase is available now, but while you're mulling it over, jump down past the break to catch a glimpse of Mickey Hart taking it for a spin.

Plumbing gone on vacation? Or just bad install? Slow drains.

Plumbing gone on vacation? Or just bad install? Slow drains.

When I am getting ready to perform a home inspection for Desert Sun Home inspections, I always ask the buyer if they have any concerns with the home.

The buyers have already been to the home and checked the home before making an offer.

On this inspection the buyers had a few concerns that they wanted me to pay special attention to.

One of the concerns was the slow moving drains. When they ran water into the sinks and bath tub, then released the water down the drains it would go down really slowly.

I would have found this on my initial inspection, this is a way I check the drains for proper operation.

? Here is a look at the kitchen sink draining very slowly.

Slow drain in kitchen sink.

There is a drain problem when the drain has bubbles coming back up the basket strainer.

I went under the home to check out the crawl space and inspect the under home plumbing.

Drain line with an uphill run.

Notice this drain line and the "uphill run"? This can cause all kinds of draining issues for the home owner or who ever is living in the home.

The drain line had been replaced at one time but the plumber either did'nt have the room or they simply did'nt replace the lines for proper flow.

With all the cast iron under the home, this should have been torn out and replaced with all new piping.

This would have allowed the drains to do their job and drain the way the lines were intended to drain.

Maybe Uncle Bob was moonlighting a s a plumber on this day. No one will ever know who did this work.

I only report what I find.

Have a great day everyone.?

Monkey Brain Area Keeps Count of Kindnesses

monkey whispers into neighbor's ear Monkeys can be kind to their neighbors ? and they have a specific brain region which appears to record their good deeds. Image: Flickr/jinterwas

Monkeys might not be known for their generosity, but when they do seem to act selflessly, a specific area in their brains keeps track of these kindnesses.

The discovery of this neuronal tally chart may help scientists to understand the neural mechanisms underlying normal social behavior in primates and humans, and might even provide insight into disorders such as autism, in which social processing is disrupted.

Steve Chang and his colleagues from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, used electrodes to directly record neuronal activity in three areas of the brain prefrontal cortex that are known to be involved in social decision-making, while monkeys performed reward-related tasks.?

When given the option either to drink juice from a tube themselves or to give the juice away to a neighbor, the test monkeys would mostly keep the drink. But when the choice was between giving the juice to the neighbor or neither monkey receiving it, the choosing monkey would frequently opt to give the drink to the other monkey.

The researchers found that in two out of the three brain areas being recorded, neurons fired in the presence or absence of the juice reward only. By contrast, the third area ? known as the anterior cingulate gyrus ? responded only when the monkey allocated the juice to the neighbor and observed it being received. The authors suggest the neurons in the ACG respond to and record the act simultaneously. The study's results are published today in Nature Neuroscience.

?This is the first time that we have had quite such a complete picture of the neuronal activity underlying a key aspect of social cognition. It is definitely a major achievement,? says Matthew Rushworth, a neuroscientist at the University of Oxford, UK.

The anterior cingulate gyrus is known to be a region that is specialized for social decision-making in primates, and it is located in the same area of the brain as that associated with the generation of feelings of empathy in humans.

Being nice
?The great complexity of human social interactions and the huge variation in what we find rewarding compared with other primates prompts questions about whether the anterior cingulate gyrus operates similarly in the human brain,? Matthew Apps and Narender Ramnani, who work on neuroimaging and human cognition at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK, told Nature in an email.

Through the development of a specific part of the brain that experiences the reward of others, social decisions and empathy-like processes may have been favored during evolution in primates to allow altruistic behavior. ?This may have evolved originally to promote being nice to family, since they share genes, and later friends, for reciprocal benefits,? says Michael Platt, a neuroscientist from Duke University who is a co-author of the paper.

The authors suggest that the intricate balance between the signaling of neurons in these three brain regions may be crucial for normal social behavior in humans, and that disruption may contribute to various psychiatric conditions, including autistic spectrum disorders.
