Leave Your Ears Alone

No. Bad idea.

OK, sorry, that was a little blunt. After all, there are a lot of smart people who think President Barack Obama didn?t go far enough in his recent proposal to cut the corporate income tax rate to 28 percent from 35 percent. ? They would like to see it go all the way to zero. They say trying to tax corporations is a waste of time because they aren?t like people?ultimately they just pass along the cost of the tax to their shareholders, workers, and (to a small extent) customers.

The abolitionists aren?t all conservatives, either. The Atlantic?s Megan McArdle has said the corporate income tax ?may be the stupidest tax we have.? Even a liberal like blogger Matt Yglesias asked on Feb. 24 why the U.S. doesn?t just ditch the corporate income tax. (He decided that getting rid of it now and replacing the revenue in a fair way is politically unrealistic.)

But this just might be a case in which the policy elites of both left and right are wrong?and ordinary Americans, who kind of like the corporate income tax, are right. The strongest argument for the corporate income tax is one that is rarely heard anymore but was widely used at its inception in 1909?namely, that the tax is a brake on excessive corporate power.

The person who has pressed this argument is Reuven Avi-Yonah, a professor at the University of Michigan Law School. Avi-Yonah is well-credentialed, with both a PhD in history from Harvard University and a JD from Harvard Law and consulting work for the Treasury Dept. and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. His 2004 paper, ?Corporations, Society and the State: A Defense of the Corporate Tax?, is a classic. Here?s an excerpt:

Why is the corporate tax so politically resilient? The reason seems to be the same as the reason the corporate alternative minimum tax was enacted in 1986- ordinary Americans have a viscerally negative reaction to the notion that large, profitable corporations should pay no tax while they bear the income tax burden. This is universally dismissed as an example of ordinary people?s ?fiscal illusion?, the misguided belief that corporations bear the burden of the tax, while every economically literate person knows that taxes can only be borne by natural persons.

But are people really that ignorant? I would argue that the answer is no, and that in fact what people perceive is closer to reality than the economic models of incidence would suggest. The corporate tax is imposed on corporate income, which adds to the economic resources of the corporation. These resources are managed by individual corporate managers, and their control over such resources gives them significant economic, social and political power. In that sense, imposing a corporate tax reduces the economic resources and therefore also the power of corporate management. Whatever the economic incidence of the corporate tax, from this perspective its most immediate burden falls on corporate management, and not surprisingly they are the strongest supporters of corporate tax repeal.

Republican William Howard Taft, who was president in 1909, was initially skeptical of taxing corporations, but ended up giving a full-throated defense of the measure in his message to Congress. Avi-Yonah dug up a quote:

While the faculty of assuming a corporate form has been of the utmost utility in the business world, it is also true that substantially all of the abuses and all of the evils which have aroused the public to the necessity of reform were made possible by the use of this very faculty. If now, by a perfectly legitimate and effective system of taxation, we are incidentally able to possess the Government and the stockholders and the public of the knowledge of the real business transactions and the gains and profits of every corporation in the country, we have made a long step toward that supervisory control of corporations which may prevent a further abuse of power.

Avi-Yonah considers this a stronger argument than the ones usually advanced by defenders of the corporate income tax, such as the idea that not taxing corporations would make it easier for people to shelter income by stuffing it into their own personal corporations. A century after the Progressive Era, Avi-Yonah comes down pretty much the same way as Taft:

My basic argument is therefore that the corporate tax is justified as a means to control the excessive accumulation of power in the hands of corporate management, which is inconsistent with a properly functioning liberal democratic polity.

It?s not an Ice Cream Sandwich-laden smartphone. It doesn?t support LTE for super-fast data speeds. And its processor is relatively underpowered in this day of quad-core chips running well in excess of 1GHz. But the Samsung Galaxy Beam, unveiled Sunday at Mobile World Congress, nonetheless packs an integrated projector whose brightness is rated at an impressive 15 lumens, and can cast a 50-inch image on any bare wall you have handy.

At 12.5mm thick, the Beam is exceedingly thin and compact for a phone with an integrated projector. And, yes, there?s definite utility in having a smartphone that can project spreadsheets and other business documents in the board room Monday through Friday, and then family photos on the living room wall during the weekends.

But will hardcore mobile enthusiasts be able to resolve all of the Beam?s hardware compromises? In the specs department, this phone is lacking.

The Beam?s OS is Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread. This is a problem, as Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is the new Android standard, and we just can?t see buying any Android phone without Google latest OS. Doctor: Teens with tic-like illness recovering

ROCHESTER, N.Y.?? For the first time since more than a dozen teens and one adult came down with a mysterious illness in LeRoy, there's good news about the case.

On Wednesday, a doctor in Buffalo who is treating some of those affected gave the good news -- at least two of the girls are recovered, and three more are showing signs of improvement.

"There are two of the girls that are all better and there are three more that are just there," says Dr. Jennifer McVigh of Dent Neurologic Institute.

McVigh credits the treatment for conversion disorder, which includes behavior modification, psychological help and medication. But some parents are giving credit to a doctor, Dr. Rosario Trifiletti, a child neurologist from New Jersey.

Trifiletti diagnosed eight of the girls with a PANDAS-like illness, and prescribed antibiotics. Some say it's those girls who are getting better.

While there seems to be a difference of opinion on who is actually getting better and what treatment is working best, most people are happy to hear the people with symptoms are improving. The hope is they all get back to normal, and life in the village gets back to normal.

"If these young ladies get better, we'd be delighted to hear it," says Batavia, N.Y. resident Russ Romano.

Gillian Romano says she feels the same way. "A lot of my friends have said, 'Why are you going to LeRoy for dinner?' and they think the restaurants are infected, when they are absolutely not.," she said.

Dr. McVigh says it also seems the fading media spotlight is helping the recovery along.

Also, the EPA is going to be removing barrels from the site of a 1970 train derailment. Though the barrels have not been connected to the Tourette's-like symptoms, lawmakers say removing them will give the community peace of mind after some questioned the symptoms stemmed from an environmental cause.

Environmental activist Erin Brockovich's team has been investigating possible environmental contamination at the school district's location since late January. The group has not found? evidence of toxic chemicals at LeRoy Junior-Senior High School, where the girls all attended when their symptoms began, although Brokovich issued a statement earlier this week saying testing would continue.

"While we certainly do not want to cause a panic in the community, we do want to be thorough and get to the bottom of what is going on in LeRoy," she said in the statement.

The Epson EX3200 Multimedia Projector ($369.99 direct) is an easy-to-use portable projector for business travelers on a shoestring. It doesn?t have a huge range of connection choices, and its image quality is so-so, but it?s simple to set up, connect to a PC, and run a data presentation

The EX3200?s light source, based on the 3LCD technology developed by Epson, is rated at 2,600 lumens. The projector provides SXGA (800 by 600 pixel) native resolution, at a 4:3 aspect ratio befitting a data projector. It lacks a manual zoom, providing a 1.35 digital zoom instead.

The Epson EX3200 Multimedia Projector has a modest selection of ports: VGA-in (which doubles as component video; S-video; audio-in and audio-out; an RCA video jack; and a type B USB port for connecting with a PC. The latter is a nice touch, as its USB Plug ?n Play provides easy and fast connectivity with both Macs and Windows PCs, helpful for businesspeople who need to set up and run a presentation in a hurry.

Still and Video Image Testing

From a distance of about eight feet away, the EX3200 filled our test screen with an image about 65 inches (measured diagonally). The image was bright in a darkened room, and stood up to a fair amount of ambient light, making it suitable for smallish conference rooms.

In our testing using the DisplayMate suite, the EX3200?s data image quality proved typical of a low-priced SVGA data projector: adequate for basic business presentations, though not without flaws. There was occasional tinting; for example, some bright white areas had a slight yellowish tinge, and grays sometimes looked a bit greenish. IN our text testing, white-on-black text appeared slightly fuzzy and tinted a bit yellow at the two smallest sizes, while black on white type was fuzzy, though readable, at the smallest size. One image showed misregistration, where zones of different shading didn?t quite line up; a very thin, bright gap showed between them.

The EX3200?s video quality is sufficient for showing short clips as a part of a presentation, but I wouldn?t recommend it for longer clips, let alone movies. I noted some loss of detail in bright areas in our test clips, as well as posterization?abrupt changes in color where they should be gradual. Some colors didn?t look quite right (for instance, one normally blue night scene just appeared dark), and I?d frequently see artifacts in the form of hatching or jaggedness in scenes portraying motion or when the camera was quickly panning.

Also limiting the EX3200?s utility for projecting video is the fact that audio from the single 1-watt built-in speaker is hard to hear unless you?re very close to the projector.

The Epson EX3200 Multimedia Projector is best as a very portable and easy to set up budget projector for business travelers who need to make data presentations to small groups. There are many similar SVGA projectors on the market, such as the Dell 1210S ?($419 list, 3.5 stars). The Optoma Pro160S ?($500 street, 3.5 stars) has similar image quality and features, but it adds an HDMI port, a rarity on low-res projectors. For better image quality, higher resolution, and more features, the Editors? Choice NEC NP-M260W ?($850 street, 4 stars) should fit the bill, though at a commensurately higher price.

OPERA experiment reports anomaly in flight time of neutrinos from CERN to Gran Sasso

ScienceDaily (Feb. 23, 2012) ? The OPERA collaboration has informed its funding agencies and host laboratories that it has identified two possible effects that could have an influence on its neutrino timing measurement. These both require further tests with a short pulsed beam. If confirmed, one would increase the size of the measured effect, the other would diminish it.

The first possible effect concerns an oscillator used to provide the time stamps for GPS synchronizations. It could have led to an overestimate of the neutrino's time of flight.

The second concerns the optical fibre connector that brings the external GPS signal to the OPERA master clock, which may not have been functioning correctly when the measurements were taken. If this is the case, it could have led to an underestimate of the time of flight of the neutrinos.

The potential extent of these two effects is being studied by the OPERA collaboration. New measurements with short pulsed beams are scheduled for May.

Figuring It Out: on speaking... the Public kind

Public Speaking
When I was in High school, I took a Public Speaking class. I took it again in college. I don't remember very much from either class.

I have always loved to write. I think I wrote my first poem in 4th grade. I've been singing?for as long as I can remember. And reading and art have been interests of mine ever since I could read and hold a pencil in my hand. People say that if you do all of these things, (reading and writing in particular) then Public Speaking should be added to your repertoire. (Really?)

Loneliness
I am a pretty sensitive girl. I am shy, but I am also an extrovert. Go figure. I am terrible at initiating conversations with strangers, and sometimes, I hide behind my husband, or I make him do the talking. I don't always answer my door when people I don't know come knocking on it and I HATE talking on the phone.

You know that time during church when you are supposed to welcome the person next to you or go say "hello" to the new family that just walked in? This is the part of the church service when I cringe. I hate that about myself. There are tons of people that I miss out on all the time because I hide behind the coffee maker. I am not advocating "shyness" by any means. It's a weakness of mine and I'm working on it.

The funny thing is that I also suffer from loneliness. If I am feeling depressed or if I don't have energy to do things, it's usually when I haven't been around people for a while. (And when I say a while, I mean that?every few days or so, I need some kind of interaction that goes beyond my home life.) I thrive on the energy I get from other people. I need it. I need to have funny conversations, meaningful conversations, and deep heart-to-hearts if I am going to be a productive person in society. Facebook is great for people like me, because you don't have to look people in the eye...how sad is that?

So, knowing this about myself, I try to get involved in small groups as much as I can. I find things that I think I might be good at and I jump in. In fact, this week I have?three nights already taken up by meetings with other groups of people. (It's going to be a great week!) But part of joining things, means there will probably come a time when I have to step outside of my comfort zone.

Panic City
Over the last month or so, a friend asked me to do something that would require me?to speak?in front of 100+ people for possibly?two minutes. Two minutes doesn't seem very long, but when you are terrified,?two minutes becomes a lifetime. And speaking in front of any size group really freaks me out.

Like I said, I have been singing in front of people for most of my life, but I rarely speak words into the microphone. I think this is true for me, because singing is usually with a band of musicians...which means I am not alone up there. I have people with me trying to accomplish the same things as me.

But, life is about pressing through, finding new outlets, taking risks, and so?I thought, Sure! Why not?

The night before my speech (if you can even call it that) my stomach was hating me. I was so nervous. I tossed and turned in my sleep all night. I woke up way too early and couldn't go back to sleep. It's not?as if?I didn't prepare either. I probably over prepared considering it was only two?minutes long.?It should have been a piece of cake. What was I so worried about?

The morning came, and I was a ball of nerves. I think I ran to the bathroom three?times before leaving my house. As I sat there, waiting to be called up, I was on the verge of tears. I just wanted it to be over. I even thought about backing out. But I couldn't. I was so afraid of messing up my words and looking like a total moron, and backing out would probably seal the deal that I in fact was a moron.

Finally, the moment came. It was time. Everything became fuzzy. I walked up to the microphone and I couldn't see a single person's face.?I remember my mouth feeling very dry. My legs felt like they were going to collapse. I had never experienced anything like it... not even in my High school/college speech classes. I had to hold my notes and I could see them shaking from being in my hands. I opened my mouth, and I think words came out?and then... it was over.?It was all over. I had made it through with all of my body parts still in place. The floor was still beneath me. The world was still spinning.

Now, whether or not it was any good is another story and honestly as that moment, I didn't even care anymore. I went home, and took a nice little nap.

So what did I learn? I learned that the world isn't going to end if people see my weaknesses. And I also learned that risk is worth it, no matter the outcome.?Because, If I never get out there, if I never make friends, or push myself to take risks, if I don't risk?showing the world what kind of fool I can be, I will always be alone. I would rather fall on my face and have people there to pick me up, than hide in my room?all by myself. Even if this is not something that I ever get better at or feel comfortable with, I am glad I did it. Mission accomplished!

John P Morency is a Gartner Research Vice President whose content focus the management of disaster recovery and IT resiliency. He also focuses on compliance, security and risk management issues related to the implementation of effective disaster recovery. His IT career spans 38 years, including senior management roles in software development, IT operations management and software product marketing.

Prior to joining Gartner, Mr. Morency spent 14 years in technical, marketing and IT industry consulting, managing a wide range of services that included total cost of ownership, network complexity and infrastructure consolidation analyses. In addition, he is a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), was a member of the Emergency Management program at Boston University, and has also served as the Training Committee chairperson for the Boston chapter of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA).

He holds a BS in Computer Science Magna Cum Laude from the University of New Hampshire and has done graduate work at Babson College, Boston University and Union College. His is also a US patent holder in the area of server load balancing technology.

Client Highlight: From Baby to Toddler ? Gianna ? San Francisco ...

The most rewarding aspect of my work as a family photographer is seeing the same families year after year. Babies are even more rewarding since I get to see them before they are born and an average of 4 times in the first year.

As a family and baby photographer in the San Francsico Bay Area for more than a decade, I had the privilege to document the family history of many families. Often times it starts with a wedding. Since it has been almost 11 years I got to see babies growing to be teenagers, teenagers growing into young adults and families founded and growing up together. Soon I will be photographing the wedding of one of the teenagers I photographed a few times.

Baby Gianna was the one of first babies that I had the privilege to photograph from when she was a 6 month old baby to currently an amazing teenager. Gianna is the grand daughter of Maureen and Mike Jannini. Mike was the vice president of the Marriott Hotel and since 2010 became the president of the Cheesecake Factory. In the first 2 years we planned 6 sessions. (Please ask about our baby plan that enables you to capture all segments of your babies first year with one awesome package.) Maureen would set up sessions whenever she visited San Francisco with Gianna. After the first 7 sessions the Jannini?s moved to Washington DC. In 2006 I photographed a destination wedding in Washington DC and called Maureen to plan the next session documenting Gianna now a toddler of 4 years. In 2010 Maureen and Mike who now live in Malibu and simply flew me in to photograph Gianna now age 8. Since I migrated to the US 16 years ago from Germany I missed a lot of the growing up of my niece and nephew Kira and Marwin. Perhaps it is because of that that I value the connection to my clients so much. The following portraits are showing the different stages of Gianna growing up.

The biggest regret that Maureen had, was that she only found me when Gianna was already 6 month old, missing out on the most precious time of a new life. The general suggestion in the professional photography community is to capture the following mile stones:

Maternity (ideally around the 8th month)
Newborn (with the first 10 days)
Baby at 1 month, 3 month, 6 month, (sometime in-between), 1y, 1.5 years, 2 years etc.

Unless you are an awesome photographer yourself, you will never regret involving a professional photographer to capture the life of your child and the history of your family.

Rubbish Relationships: Why Adele's Grammy Acceptance Speech ...

The other day I was talking to my friend Jenny about a few pieces of poetry I?d been working on. I read her one I?d written over the phone because I yearned for some feedback.

?That?s really beautiful,? she said to me. ?It?s so raw and full of emotion.?

When we write a poem or a story, we want to hear someone say something along these lines. It helps validate our writing, as it should reflect the depth and breadth of emotion we attempt to convey through the words we put on the page. Expressing the emotions we felt for someone in our past or recounting that feeling of letting go of someone is certainly something most people can identify with in some fashion.

When she finished commenting on my poem, she said, ?It reminds of Adele?s speech last night.?

I knew exactly what she was referring to?Adele?s reference to rubbish relationships. Adele had said, Grammy in hand, ?This album was inspired by something that is really normal and everyone?s been through it?it?s a rubbish relationship.?

So true.

Rubbish relationships are the foundation of many stories, films, poems, songs, and the reason why so many psychologists and psychiatrists stay in business. The care of the soul after love. The broken heart. The loss of love. The drama of first love, engagements, marriages, divorces, and even deaths.

I can?t get enough of stories about relationships. I?m reading a novel now about an older couple who fall in love. It?s sweet and sentimental. I?ve written one about a younger couple who fall in love, but then go through a difficult time when the reality of family, life, and careers come into play. There?s a downfall. I draw on emotions I?ve experienced in my past to help me write my characters and their own experiences. If you can?t allow yourself to go to that place?no matter how rotten it may have been?you may not be effective.

When a heart falls in love, it?s wonderful.

However, it?s the ability to convey the emotions of the breaking heart that wins the affection of the public.

Incidentally, we don?t use the word ?rubbish? here in America like the British folks do. From here on out, I?m promising to substitute the word ?rubbish? for words I normally use to describe unsuccessful relationships. I?m rather fond of rubbish.

If you, like me, have been the victim of a rubbish relationship, be thankful you opened your eyes and were able to see it for what it was. Be thankful you got your wits back. It may have been hard, but it beats being swallowed up in a Red Sea of Rubbish.

Adele is thankful for it. It earned her a Grammy for Album of the Year.
