A Career Coach: The Catalyst for Your Success!

??The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches??but to reveal to him his own.?? ? Benjamin Disraeli

Hiring a coach is a smart move if you?re seeking meaningful direction or advancement in your career. Coaches can be instrumental in helping their clients build on their strengths, overcome weaknesses, avoid blind spots and develop finesse in advancing their careers. Recognizing the value of a coach requires emotional maturity and humility.? Few can honestly say that they made it to the top of their field without some kind of a mentor.? The question you should ask yourself isn?t whether or not a coach can be useful but rather, how do I choose a coach that will boost my chances for success? Many of the most talented and successful athletes, entertainers, motivational speakers, politicians and executives attribute their rise to great heights to having an effective coach.

Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman and CEO of Google, helped grow the company from a Silicon Valley startup to a global leader in technology. In a recent interview with CNN Money, Schmidt said the best advice he ever got was that I should have a coach.? He admitted that initially he resented the advice, because after all, ?I was a CEO.? I was pretty experienced.? Why should I need a coach?? Am I doing something wrong?? His argument was, How could a coach advise me if I?m the best person in the world at this?? But that?s not what a good coach does. A coach doesn?t have to play the sport as well as you do. They have to watch you and get YOU to be your best. A coach is somebody who looks at something with another set of eyes, describes it to you in (her) words, and discusses how to approach the problem.?

Career Coaches come with a variety of educational backgrounds, credentials and certifications but there is still no formal rating system to help consumers identify an effective coach. Finding a coach you can trust and who can help you with gaining perspective requires some research. Word of mouth is one way to find a good coach. Another way to gain insight about a coach?s abilities is to read their articles and career blogs to see if their content is filled with meaningful advice that resonates with you. While a conventional advertisement gives you the basic credentials and a brief description of their services, the articles coaches write provide a clearer indication of the substance they could offer and the depth of their expertise on career trends and strategies.

Marketers describe this form of advertising as ?Content Marketing? and it?s used more frequently today as a means for businesses to reach consumers and provide them with useful, free information as a means of showcasing their value. Career Coaches are beginning to brand themselves by writing blogs on topics relating to career management.

Choosing a coach

Here are some tips to keep in mind when choosing a coach:? Is the coach articulate, persuasive, well informed about industry trends and well versed in training clients for interviews? Can your coach assist you in finding multiple opportunities that suit your skills and interests? Does your coach understand the mindset of hiring managers? Will your Coach be able to assist you in tailoring your resume and your cover letter to explain why you?re the right fit for a specific job? Will your coach be capable of training you to communicate your message in a compelling, authentic way?

It?s also important that your coach present you with a variety of resources that will address your specific concerns and needs. The astute coach should give you feedback about your strengths and also help you see yourself in a realistic light without diminishing your esteem. In short, if you relate to the messages and topics a coach writes about, you will probably relate to their coaching style.

Once you establish a rapport with a coach, seek out their opinion on areas you improvement. Don?t be afraid of criticism.?It will help you to concentrate in the areas which you need improvement. A good coach can identify blind spots that inhibit us from making great decisions.

The blind spots

Aviv Shahar, Founder of Aviv Consulting,?www.avivconsulting.com

is an international consultant, coach, author and featured speaker. He has extensive experience coaching executives and helping leaders improve their effectiveness, strategic thinking and collaboration. Aviv wrote an insightful essay detailing a variety of common blind spots that can inhibit people from making objective, clear, unbiased decisions. He identifies different blind spots:

  1. ?The Bias Blindness? If you are a human you have biases and preferences. The point is to?become aware?and get to know your biases. If you don?t, they control you and prevent you from seeing the full picture and from making optimal decisions.
  2. ?The Reaction Blindness? Reacting is not choosing.?You have the capacity to consider options and to choose how to respond. ?Experience is not what happens to you; it is what you do with what happens to you.?
  3. ?The ?Why? Blindness? Purpose outlines direction?and defines criteria against which all decisions can be measured.? Being unclear on your overarching purpose ? your ?Why? ? can leave you rudderless and without a compass.
  4. ?The Objectives blindness ??Clarify your desired outcome and what success looks like.?A decision is a choice among alternatives. If you are not clear about the ?What? (objective) it?s difficult to choose among the options.
  5. ?The Musts/Wants Blindness? Musts are deal breakers. Wants are nice to have.?Beware of confusing ?wants? for ?musts.?? In matters of importance and in large purchasing decisions like buying a home, define first the musts and then order the wants by weight of importance.?

I agree with Aviv?s assertions about the importance of knowing your blind spots and the value of finding a mentor who can help you to see them clearly.? An expert coach can provide you with a new perspective so you can see your blind spots and avoid costly mistakes from poorly thought out decisions. ?It?s wise to find someone you trust to bounce off questions about your choices and your strategy for achieving your goals. A successful professional coach can help you identify and work through your blind spots to set you on a direct path towards achieving your goals.

Mitt Romney Is All In For Monsanto | Neon Tommy

Mitt Romney has close ties with Monsanto. (Creative Commons)

Agriculture is one of the most important industries in the U.S., since we are the bread basket of the world. However, it is an industry that is largely taken for granted.?

The turn of the last century ushered in an era of U.S. dominance in manufacturing. The resultant new economy forced agriculture to industrialize as well, and this is what gave us Monsanto.

The infamous Monsanto Company started out as an industrial chemical company in 1901. Up until the 1940s, Monsanto made chemicals such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), in addition to plastics and synthetic fabrics.

In the 1960s, Monsanto established its agricultural division, which the company has since adopted as its main business model.

The company has always prided itself on "having friends in high places" - especially when it comes to business executives-turned-politicians. From 1977 to 1985, Mitt Romney was involved with the company via Bain & Company. Romney represented Monsanto so well during the first slew of Monsanto controversies that in fact, the origins of the firm Bain Capital can be traced to Monsanto.

The Vietnam War was the catalyst for Monsanto's poor reputation. The company supplied a herbicide known as Agent Orange to the U.S. military for use in the war. This chemical has since been linked to cancer outbreaks among Vietnamese and American soldiers, and the use of Agent Orange has been crowned "the largest chemical warfare operation in history."

In addition, Monsanto, which is based out of St. Louis, has been linked to chemical dumping incidents as recently as 2002. There have been documented cases of chemical disposal in rivers in Missouri and Alabama. Ten years ago, a Mother Jones article described fish "spurting blood and shedding skin within 10 seconds of a PCB dump."?

In the aftermath of these tragedies, Romney was charged with guiding the company out of lawsuits with Congress. Romney proved to be a critical asset to Monsanto, and Bain & Company was forced to create Bain Capital for Mitt Romney in order to keep him with the firm. At Bain Capital, Romney held the title of both president and CEO.

For decades now, the corporate agricultural monopoly has been concealing its fraudulent practices with the help of other key lawmakers. Monsanto affiliates include congressional men and women on both sides of the political spectrum, including Lidia Watrud, Roger Beachy and Hilary Clinton.

Not only has Romney done his part to protect Monsanto in the past, but he has also hinted at his plans to help the company in the future. His Agricultural Advisory Committee is comprised mostly of Monsanto lobbyists and partners.

Even worse, Romney is in favor putting the "Monsanto rider" provision in the 2012 Farm Bill. The Farm Bill, which has been put on ice in the House until after the election, has been a hotly debated partisan bill which for many months now. The "Monsanto rider" provision of the bill would prevent the USDA from blocking "unsafe or untested products, forbid outside studies of Monsanto products? safety, and exempt itself from environmental law."

This past summer, the worst drought in recent memory hit the great plains area, which among other things has caused a spike in food prices. WIth no end to the drought in sight, climate change on the horizon and continued pollution threats to our fresh water, do we really want a president who supports the interests of a company that doesn't give a damn about the environment?

Mitt Romney can't be trusted to protect our natural resources and lead this country toward a sustainable future. He will be a puppet for Monsanto, like other lawmakers before him.

Ubisoft expects to find free-to-play model in next-generation games ...

Ubisoft expects to find free-to-play model in next-generation games

AAA titles for the next-generation consoles can learn a great deal from the free-to-play model, believes Ubisoft.

According to investor conference call, the CEO of the company Alain Martinez came out to openly state that he expects to see the contemporary model makes its way to the consoles in the not-so-distant future.

He believes that the model is an excellent way of increasing the profitability of the games, something that more and more publishers are becoming aware of with every passing day.

"There will be free-to-play on consoles," he said. "But in the future, with games like Sleeping Dogs, we could see more opportunity for $60 games to learn from the free-to-play model.

Offering item-based content is something that is almost becoming a trend nowadays, with the companies realising that gamers are more content with trying out the game for free before deciding whether it is worth spending their hard-earned cash on.

While the model is more prevalent in PC games at the moment, Martinez expects to see games for consoles featuring more premium content while offering the basic experience for free.

Ubisoft is surely in a position to comment on the free-to-play business model as it has already implemented the model in a couple of its games, namely Ghost Recon Online and The Settlers Online, both of which were fund through micro-transactions.

The $60 games are losing their appeal for the gamers because of the lack of creativity in them. The publishers seem to have adopted a risk aversion attitude, expecting the next-generation consoles to be just around the corner and therefore refraining from introducing new intellectual properties (IP), keeping them reserved for the high-end consoles instead.

The ubiquity of sequels in the market is not going down too well with both the industry analysts as well as the gamers. However, as long as the fans of the franchises are ready to spend their money on these games, primarily because of the multi-player experience.

The free-to-play model works out well both for the publishers as well as the gamers, which is why it is becoming increasingly popular and expected to arrive on the consoles in the future as Ubisoft indicated.

Pa. 'Food Desert' to Get First Nonprofit Supermarket - Philanthropy ...

A Philadelphia-area hunger charity has announced plans to open what it calls the nation?s first nonprofit supermarket in Chester, Pa., a city that has not had a major grocery store for 11 years, says?The Philadelphia Inquirer.

At a ceremony Thursday in the Delaware County town, Philabundance detailed plans for a ?Fare & Square? market to launch in the spring. The 13,000-square-foot store?about a third of the size of conventional supermarket?will require customers to become ?members? to shop there, but the prices will below average, according to?Philabundance head William Clark.

?We?re confident this will be a game-changer for the City of Chester,? said Mr. Clark. Chester officials said they hoped the nonprofit market would attract other big stores to the town, which has had trouble attracting grocery chains due to poverty and crime problems, leaving residents with an array of unhealthy food options.

Marty Meloche, a food-marketing professor at Saint Joseph?s University in Philadelphia, said Chester goes beyond the government definition of a ?food desert.? He termed the town more akin to ?Death Valley. There?s no water anywhere.?

U.S. Grants License for Uranium Laser Enrichment

The license allows for construction of a plant that uses a process that critics fear could pose a serious nuclear-proliferation risk

From Nature magazine

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) this week granted a licence to allow construction of a plant that uses a controversial uranium enrichment process ? one that critics fear could pose a serious nuclear-proliferation risk. The plant, which would be built through a partnership between General Electric (GE) and Hitachi in Wilmington, North Carolina, could be used to enrich uranium to make fuel for nuclear reactors quickly and cheaply using a process that involves a laser.

The laser process has long held the promise of cheaper uranium enrichment, but mastering it efficiently has so far proved elusive. Now, many think that GE Hitachi, which uses a proprietary enrichment technique known as separation of isotopes by laser excitation, or SILEX, may have finally found a way to make the method more efficient than processes involving gaseous diffusion or centrifuges (See Risky Business).

Although the exact details of the SILEX process are highly classified, it involves using a laser tuned to a specific frequency to siphon away the desired isotope uranium-235 from the gaseous form of uranium. This can then be used in nuclear fuels.

Proliferation worry

The concern is that building a fully operational plant could prompt other countries to follow suit, making it easier for them to develop bombs, even though the process is classified. The original application for the GE Hitachi plant in 2009 set off a protracted debate over whether the NRC, headquartered in Rockville, Maryland, sufficiently weighs proliferation risks when licensing new types of enrichment technology (See 'Laser plant offers cheap way to make nuclear fuel'). That prompted the American Physical Society (APS) in College Park, Maryland, to file a formal petition with the NRC asking that such licences be subject to a formal review of proliferation risks.

Calling the new technology a ?game changer?, the APS argued that a laser enrichment plant would, in theory, be smaller than one that uses gas centrifuges, and thus if the technology were to spread, it would be more difficult to spot would-be proliferators. The full petition will be sent to the NRC in November, and the commission will then vote on it ? although it will be too late to affect the GE Hitachi licence.

Yet concerns over proliferation could be seen as premature, because having the licence in hand does not mean that the plant will actually be built. The NRC would have to hold a public meeting in Wilmington before construction could get under way, for instance. And David McIntyre, a spokesman for the NRC, notes that GE Hitachi is not expected to decide until the end of next year whether or not it will proceed with that step.

?We expect a commercialization decision to occur over the next several months,? the company said in a statement. ?This will take into account many factors, including the need for enriched uranium in both the short and long term, cost and efficiency models of the technology on a commercial scale and other considerations.?

There is also still uncertainty about whether GE Hitachi really has the ability to make laser enrichment economical. ?I think anybody who doesn?t have access to GE [Hitachi] proprietary information doesn?t have the answer,? says James Acton, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington DC.

Acton, a physicist by training, points out that GE Hitachi has so far only built a "test loop" to see whether laser enrichment can be made economical. ?That?s all that?s known publicly, anything beyond that is pure speculation,? he adds.

Plane going to Everest region crashes, killing 19

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) ? A plane carrying trekkers to the Everest region crashed and burned just after takeoff Friday morning in Nepal's capital, killing the 19 Nepali, British and Chinese people on board, authorities said.

The pilot of the domestic Sita Air flight reported trouble two minutes after takeoff, and Katmandu airport official Ratish Chandra Suman said the pilot appeared to have been trying to turn back. The crash site is only 500 meters (547 yards) from the airport, and the wrecked plane was pointing toward the airport area.

Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the crash and identify the bodies, and Suman said he could not confirm if the plane was already on fire before it crashed. Cellphone video shot by locals showed the front section of the plane was on fire when it first hit the ground and appeared the pilot had attempted to land the plane on open ground beside a river.

The fire quickly spread to the rear, but the tail was still in one piece at the scene near the Manohara River on the southwest edge of Katmandu. Villagers were unable to approach the plane because of the fire and it took some time for firefighters to reach the area and bring the fire under control.

Soldiers and police shifted through the crash wreckage looking for bodies and documents to help identify the victims. Seven passengers were British and five were Chinese; the other four passengers and the three crew members were from Nepal, authorities said.

Large number of local people and security forces gathered at the crash site. The charred bodies were taken by vans to the hospital morgue.

The weather in Katmandu and surrounding areas was clear on Friday morning, and it was one of the first flights to take off from Katmandu's Tribhuwan International Airport. Other flights reported no problems, and the airport operated normally.

The plane was heading for Lukla, the gateway to Mount Everest. Thousands of Westerners make treks in the region around the world's highest peak each year. Autumn is considered the best time to trek the foothills of the Himalayan peaks.

The crash follows an avalanche on another Nepal peak Sunday that killed seven foreign climbers and a Nepali guide.

The Note's Must-Reads for Thursday, September 27, 2012

The Note's Must-Reads are a round-up of today's political headlines and stories from ABC News and the top U.S. newspapers. Posted Monday through Friday right here at www.abcnews.com

Compiled by ABC News' Jayce Henderson, Amanda VanAllen and Carrie Halperin

MITT ROMNEY ABC News' Michael Falcone: " Mitt Romney: 'Pleased With Some Polls, Less So With Other Polls'" On the same day that polls in two key battleground states - Ohio and Florida - showed President Obama growing his lead over Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential candidate acknowledged that he is "pleased with some polls, less so with other polls." "Frankly at this early stage, polls go up, polls go down," Romney said in an interview on Wednesday with ABC's David Muir on the campaign trail in Toledo, Ohio. LINK The New York Times' Ashley Parker: " Romney Ad Reaches Out to Working Class" Mitt Romney stepped up his efforts to repair the damage from his "47 percent" comments, releasing a new television ad on Wednesday in which he speaks directly to the camera about his compassion and tries to reassure voters that he cares about the poor and middle class. LINK

The Los Angeles Times' Seema Mehta: " Romney cites his healthcare law as proof of his compassion" Mitt Romney, while campaigning in Ohio on Wednesday, highlighted the healthcare law that he passed while governor of Massachusetts as proof of his empathy for people. "I think throughout this campaign as well, we talked about my record in Massachusetts, don't forget - I got everybody in my state insured," Romney told NBC News in an interview before he headlined a rally here. LINK

PAUL RYAN Politico's David Rogers: " Without Ryan Medicare ax, GOP budget still in red" In a little-noticed but vital change last spring, the House Budget Committee chairman cut half a point from the annual growth rate he had allowed for Medicare spending. It gave him the extra margin needed to pay for tax cuts and still placate the right by getting to balance in 2040. But it meant breaking with Ryan's fellow Medicare reformer, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), and raised this question that echoes now in the presidential campaign: Did Ryan cut corners with seniors to pay for tax cuts just as he accuses President Barack Obama of doing to finance health care reform? LINK

OBAMA VS. ROMNEY The Washington Post's Scott Wilson: " Obama, Romney differ on U.S. exceptionalism" President Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney made clear this week that they share an overriding belief: American political and economic values should triumph in the world. Where the two differ most is in how a debt-burdened United States, weary after more than a decade of war, should engage other nations to pursue that goal. LINK

The Hills' Justin Sink: " Romney brings in famous friends as Obama leads in crucial Ohio" Mitt Romney and President Obama crisscrossed Ohio on Wednesday as the GOP nominee brought in some celebrity friends to boost his bid and the president sought to solidify his double-digit lead in the battleground state. The candidates held a total of five public events throughout the day, trading barbs on trade with China and detailing their plans to reduce the unemployment rate in the traditionally blue-collar state. LINK

Bloomberg's Julianna Goldman and Julie Hirschfeld Davis: " Obama Works Virginia Base Voters as Romney Pushes Turnout" Stella Okeke might have been a lost vote for Barack Obama. The Nigeria-born nurse supported the president in 2008 and wanted to vote for him again. Yet it took a conversation with an Obama campaign worker on the doorstep of her Woodbridge, Virginia townhome on Sept. 22 to inform Okeke, 36, that she was still registered and needed merely to show up on Election Day to cast her ballot. LINK

The Washington Times' Seth McLaughlin: " Romney, Obama locked in a duel for Ohio's working-class voters" Scrambling to regain his footing in the Buckeye State, Mitt Romney enlisted the help Wednesday of a golf legend and a television star with the sort of blue-collar credentials that could resonate with the state's working-class voters. President Obama, meanwhile, made his own Ohio pitch to college crowds at Bowling Green and Kent State. The dueling visits spoke volumes about the critical role that Ohio - a state where manufacturing jobs in the automobile industry and other sectors have been lost in recent years as companies have shifted operations overseas - is expected to play in the coming presidential election. LINK

VOTING USA Today's Gregory Korte: " In early voting, campaigns target unlikely voters" Early voters tend to be educated, informed and motivated voters - the kind of people who would probably find a way to vote no matter what. So the major presidential campaigns will spend the next month looking for exactly the opposite - unlikely voters - to get to the polls before Election Day. LINK

SWING STATES The Washington Times' Colleen McCain Nelson, Carol E. Lee, and Sara Murray: " Electoral Drama Shifts to Ohio" Both presidential campaigns rolled into this crucial swing state Wednesday with new urgency, as Mitt Romney fought for a jolt of momentum and President Barack Obama looked to solidify his standing after inching further ahead in polls in the state. Mr. Obama tailored his message to issues that resonate locally, highlighting recent trade complaints against China and the auto bailout LINK

'I'm bored!' -- Research on attention sheds light on the unengaged mind

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? You're waiting in the reception area of your doctor's office. The magazines are uninteresting. The pictures on the wall are dull. The second hand on the wall clock moves so excruciatingly slowly that you're sure it must be broken. You feel depleted and irritated about being stuck in this seemingly endless moment. You want to be engaged by something -- anything -- when a thought, so familiar from childhood, comes to mind: "I'm bored!"

Although boredom is often seen as a trivial and temporary discomfort that can be alleviated by a simple change in circumstances, it can also be a chronic and pervasive stressor that can have significant consequences for health and well-being.

Boredom at work may cause serious accidents when safety depends on continuous vigilance, as in medical monitoring or long-haul truck driving. On a behavioral level, boredom has been linked with problems with impulse control, leading to overeating and binge eating, drug and alcohol abuse, and problem gambling. Boredom has even been associated with mortality, lending grim weight to the popular phrase "bored to death."

Although it's clear that boredom can be a serious problem, the scientific study of boredom remains an obscure niche of research, and boredom itself is still poorly understood. Even though it's a common experience, boredom hasn't been clearly defined within the scientific community.

Psychological scientist John Eastwood of York University (Ontario, Canada) and colleagues at the University of Guelph and the University of Waterloo wanted to understand the mental processes that underlie our feelings of boredom in order to create a precise definition of boredom that can be applied across a variety of theoretical frameworks. Their new article, which brings together existing research on attention and boredom, is published in the September 2012 issue of Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Drawing from research across many areas of psychological science and neuroscience, Eastwood and colleagues define boredom as "an aversive state of wanting, but being unable, to engage in satisfying activity," which arises from failures in one of the brain's attention networks.

Specifically, we're bored when:

  • We have difficulty paying attention to the internal information (e.g., thoughts or feelings) or external information (e.g., environmental stimuli) required for participating in satisfying activity
  • We're aware of the fact that we're having difficulty paying attention
  • We believe that the environment is responsible for our aversive state (e.g., "this task is boring," "there is nothing to do").

The researchers are confident that integrating the disparate fields of cognitive neuroscience, social psychology, and clinical psychology will produce a more thorough understanding of boredom and attention -- phenomena which are ubiquitous and intimately linked.

Armed with a precise and broadly applicable definition of boredom that gets at the underlying mental processes, the authors identify important next steps in research on boredom. Eastwood and his colleagues hope to help in the discovery and development of new strategies that ease the problems of boredom sufferers and address the potential dangers of cognitive errors that are often associated with boredom.

"The Fighters Guild is a brotherhood of warriors. We provide a service to Cathyria, lending steel and shield to those who need our help.
Whether that means ridding a town of an invading menace or protecting a helpless mage, we'll take the contract."

The Fighters Guild is a professional organization chartered to regulate the hiring and training of mercenaries and skilled warriors in Cathyria. The guild was founded and shortly after its establishment it became the official warriors guild that citizens from all walks of life in Cathyria depended on for protection and combat assistance. The Warrior Guild will accept almost any contract. Contracts pertaining to the killing of infestations of rats, eliminating troublesome bandits, delivering packages, and escorting high-ranking nobles are all suitable jobs for a member of the Fighters Guild.

Anyone interested in combat that is focused on an honest living can join the Guild. Unfortunately, the guild has recently started having trouble with a new group of mercenaries known as the Red Thorn Company who have been stealing contracts and fighters from them. As of late they have been attacking guild members and leaving them for dead.

Computers match humans in understanding art

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Understanding and evaluating art has widely been considered as a task meant for humans, until now. Computer scientists Lior Shamir and Jane Tarakhovsky of Lawrence Technological University in Michigan tackled the question "can machines understand art?" The results were very surprising. In fact, an algorithm has been developed that demonstrates computers are able to "understand" art in a fashion very similar to how art historians perform their analysis, mimicking the perception of expert art critiques.

In the experiment, published in the recent issue of ACM Journal on Computing and Cultural Heritage, the researchers used approximately 1,000 paintings of 34 well-known artists, and let the computer algorithm analyze the similarity between them based solely on the visual content of the paintings, and without any human guidance. Surprisingly, the computer provided a network of similarities between painters that is largely in agreement with the perception of art historians.

The analysis showed that the computer was clearly able to identify the differences between classical realism and modern artistic styles, and automatically separated the painters into two groups, 18 classical painters and 16 modern painters. Inside these two broad groups the computer identified sub-groups of painters that were part of the same artistic movements. For instance, the computer automatically placed the High Renaissance artists Raphael, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Michelangelo very close to each other. The Baroque painters Vermeer, Rubens and Rembrandt were also clustered together by the algorithm, showing that the computer automatically identified that these painters share similar artistic styles.

The automatic computer analysis is in agreement with the view of art historians, who associate these three painters with the Baroque artistic movement. Similarly, the computer algorithm deduced that Gauguin and C?zanne, both considered post-impressionists, have similar artistic styles, and also identified similarities between the styles of Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, and Giorgio de Chirico, all are considered by art historians to be part of the surrealism school of art. Overall, the computer automatically produced an analysis that is in large agreement with the influential links between painters and artistic movements as defined by art historians and critiques.

While the average non-expert can normally make the broad differentiation between modern art and classical realism, they have difficulty telling the difference between closely related schools of art such as Early and High Renaissance or Mannerism and Romanticism. The experiment showed that machines can outperform untrained humans in the analysis of fine art.

The experiment was performed by computing from each painting 4,027 numerical image context descriptors -- numbers that reflect the content of the image such as texture, color and shapes in a quantitative fashion. This allows the computer to reflect very many aspects of the visual content, and use pattern recognition and statistical methods to detect complex patterns of similarities and dissimilarities between the artistic styles and then quantify these similarities.

I Hate This Brave, New World - Journal of Humanitarian Affairs

Sam Vaknin???I hate this brave, new world where:

Illiteracy is 140 characters long and has a face-book;
Everyone has a thousand virtual ?friends?, but virtually no real friend;
Every child has a mother and multiple fathers, but no parents;
Knowledge is a matter of opinion and opinions a matter of fads;
Our idols sport muscles and vocal cords, but little else besides;
The right to vote is universal, but the will to vote is not;
Everyone has a right to free speech, but little of value to say;
Extramarital sex is considered recreation and monogamy a throwback;
The only ideology is self-gratification and collectives are mere dim
memories;
The only certainty is uncertainty and the only permanent fixture is change
(for change?s sake);
Obsolescence is the driver of innovation, but science, art, and literature
are obsolete;

As men and women lose their traditional roles, confusion and inter-gender
enmity reign. In a unisex world, homosexuality, or sexual abstinence are
rational choices. As malignant, narcissistic individualism is on the rise,
the species is dying out. In many countries ? including major ones such as
Japan, Russia, and Germany ? the population is declining precipitously. More
than one third of the youth of these places opt for celibacy and singlehood.
Sperm counts have plummeted by a whopping 70%.

We are in the throes of vanishing.

importance of fruits | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets, Workouts ...

Fruits are a delight to the human senses. Fruits are the most attractive, delicious, and nutritious of all foods available. Decorating a fruit tray may sound interesting but it can be a real hassle if you aren?t aware of the different fruit types. The importance of fruits in your diet can be attributed to the fact that they contain many vitamins, minerals and fiber, which are necessary for optimum digestion.

Fruits are the best source of natural sugar and are packed with anti-oxidants. They are high in fiber and low in calories. Fruits are also low in sodium so they help reduce the chance of gaining weight due to fluid retention. Protection from illnesses is yet another benefit we gain from consuming fruit.

Fruits also protect your body from cancer-causing free radicals and slow down the effects of aging.

Fruits are at their best when eaten in the raw and ripe state. A fruit platter is a lovely addition to any gathering. A large dish decorated with various fresh fruits arranged in a pattern can be extremely delicious and appetizing. All fruits should have their individual places in the platter so that it gains a uniform appearance.

Here are a few fruit platter ideas which may be of use to you:

For a perfect fruit platter you must add a variety of fruits with different colors and textures.
Be careful with fragile fruits such as berries which get crushed easily.

Place them on the top of the bowl as garnishing.

The key to create a good looking fruit platter is to cut and slice your fruits into similar sized and shaped pieces.
You must ensure that you choose your fruits well. Shop for bright colored fruits with different textures in order to add variety to the platter.

It is very important that all the fruits are washed well and dried.

A fruit platter looks even better when you make two sections of fruits. One section can have whole fruits such as grapes, cherries, and berries and the other section can have sliced fruits which include apples, bananas, and oranges.
You can also slice melons and pineapples so they are displayed in their rinds.

Dominion Virginia Power Offers New Energy Conservation Programs, Including Home Check-up

Lightbulb in hand - attributed to freedigitalphotos.net

Dominion Virginia Power has begun offering residential customers new energy conservation programs, including a Home Energy Check-Up with a rebate that is based on the energy efficiency measures installed.

?We encourage customers who want to make their homes more energy efficient to take a close look at these programs,? said Ken Barker, Dominion vice president of customer solutions and energy conservation.? ?Along with helping customers save money, there also is an environmental benefit to using less energy.?

In addition to the Home Energy Check-Up program, Dominion is offering programs to test and seal heating and cooling system duct work, to tune-up heat pumps and to upgrade heat pumps to more efficient units.? The Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) has authorized the company to offer these programs.

In each program, the customer selects and works directly with a contractor from an approved list. Details on each program, including the names of approved contractors in the customer?s area, are available on www.dom.com, search: Energy Conservation.? Information is also available by calling toll-free at 1-866-DOM-HELP, (1-866-366-4357).

Each program offers a rebate to participants.? The amount of the incentive varies.? In the Home Energy Check-Up program, a qualifying customer will receive a personalized report with findings and recommendations for saving energy, as well as a rebate based on improvements involving the water heater, sinks and showerheads, lighting, air conditioning filters and other items.? The company estimates that the average one-time incentive will be approximately $230 for customers making improvements that are based on the check-up results.

The average incentives are $125 for the residential Duct Testing and Sealing program and $90 per unit for a residential Heat Pump Tune-Up program.? The average incentive is $200 for the Heat Pump Upgrade program for installing a unit with an efficiency rating of 14.5 to 15.9 and $250 for a rating of 16 and higher.

These new programs join the other energy conservation initiatives that the company is offering.

Citing the success of the Smart Cooling Rewards program, in which air conditioning units are cycled off and on for certain hours during very hot days, Dominion recently asked state regulators to extend the program for five years. The program reduces peak demand by nearly 60 megawatts of power, equal to the output of a small generating station.

The company also asked to extend for two years the Income-Qualifying Home Improvement program to identify and install energy conservation measures at homes of qualified customers.

Dominion is one of the nation?s largest producers and transporters of energy, with a portfolio of approximately 28,000 megawatts of generation. Dominion operates the nation?s largest natural gas storage system and serves retail energy customers in 15 states. For more information about Dominion, visit the company?s website at www.dom.com.

peter marigold for oyuna - london design festival

peter marigold collaborates with cashmere brand oyuna to produce an installation for the 2012 london design festival
image ? joakim blockstrom

as part of the 2012 london design festival and in celebration of cashmere brand oyuna's 10 year anniversary, the fabric company
has collaborated with london-based furniture designer peter marigold to create a symbolic installation - one that reinterprets the
traditional mongolian?'ger' tent-house while also capturing oyuna's nomadic roots. director and designer of oyuna, oyuna tserendorj,
worked with marigold to conceive a structure that redefines the concept of indoor and outdoor spaces - built from blackened raw steel,
and dark cast wooden surfaces, the delicate installation offers a compelling setting for the distinctive oyuna cashmere shawls,
throws and clothing. the conceptual metal display system references the mongolian landscape and 'ger' tent - symbolizing the
'wanderer' principles of beauty, purity and versatility inherent in oyuna's latest collection. marigold and tserendorj placed particular
emphasis on choice of the skeletal steel material of the design - presenting a subtle contrast to the light weight and airy fabrics.
the special installation is hosted by gallery libby sellers.

marigold says of the work:

'we did not want to make something that was too dominant and would overpower the delicacy of cashmere'.

tserendorj reflects on marigold's interpretation of her brand:

'our cashmere comes from plains where nomads live in gers, so it feels great to display our collection in a reinterpreted version,
almost as though it were ?returning home?. a mongolian ger is one of the best places to sleep ? while star-gazing and smelling
nature?s pristine scents ? peter?s installation holds its traditional values of ease, adaptability and lightness without compromising on beauty
'.

the installation is on display at brompton design district; 4 cromwell place, london until the 23rd of september, 2012.
