The OF Blog: William Faulkner, "A Rose for Emily" (revised review)

When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her funeral: the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house, which no one save an old man-servant ? a combined gardener and cook ? had seen in at least ten years. (p. 119)
Out of all of his fabulous novels and short stories, William Faulkner?s 1931 short story, ?A Rose for Emily,? has long been a personal favorite.? In only a few thousand words, Faulkner creates a multilayered tale that works as a personal tragedy, an allegory, and a pointed social commentary, among other things. It is a story that I?ve re-read on a few occasions since the time I was first introduced to it in a freshman English Composition class back in 1992 and each time, new elements come to the fore of my thoughts on ?A Rose for Emily.?

Take for instance the opening paragraph. We see, through the perspective of the third-person narrator, the combination of duty and morbid curiosity of the townspeople of the fictional Jefferson, Mississippi (the final resting place of Addie Bunchen from As I Lay Dying, also published in 1930) regarding the death of that ?fallen monument.? This description of Miss Emily evokes images of grandeur fated to decay. In the five sections of this tale, decay looms prominently:

??only Miss Emily?s house was left, lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps?? (p. 119)
?When the Negro opened the blinds of one window, they could see that the leather was cracked; and when they sat down, a faint dust rose sluggishly about their thighs, spinning with slow motes in the single sun-ray.? (p. 120)
?And so she died. Fell ill in the house filled with dust and shadows, with only a doddering Negro man to wait on her.? (p. 128)
Yet there is more than just the tragic fall of Miss Emily into decayed disrepair. Faulkner?s mixture of the literary past and present accentuates a larger change that is taking place in Jefferson that has largely bypassed Miss Emily?s mostly-shuttered relic of a home. A new generation is emerging in the 1930s, one that has no first-hand recollection of the horrors of the Civil War and its traumatic aftermath. The complexities of a Colonel Sartoris, who is referenced in a single sentence as being a courtly gentleman who remits Miss Emily?s city taxes in perpetuity while, as Mayor, creating an anti-black ordinance that serves as a reminder of the Jim Crow era, and his era are slowly giving way to a different generational outlook. There are a few fleeting references to how that ?monument,? Miss Emily, has had to battle city leaders who seek to revoke the Colonel?s roundabout way of ?providing charity? to the nearly indigent scion of an old Southern family. This connects with other references to social mores and the ways that the neighborhood around Miss Emily?s home is changing. Decay is much more than a person or home mouldering into dust.

?A Rose for Emily? is littered with foreshadowings of the final event. From the purchase of arsenic, ?for rats,? to the spreading of lime to the drastic changes in Miss Emily?s figure, nearly every paragraph contains portents for what follows after. The narrative suspense developed from each of these little clues actually improves upon a re-read, as much of the joy derived from the story comes from seeing how adroitly Faulkner weaves these references to Miss Emily?s past and present, overlain with commentary on the townspeople and their myriad responses to the events surrounding Miss Emily and her later seclusion, into a narrative tapestry that is a delight to read and re-read.

Furthermore, the two most powerful ?voices? in this novel never ?speak? from a point of view perspective. Miss Emily we come to know through her curt politeness to the city leaders, but beyond that and the recollections offered by the narrator, tinged with innuendo as those are, we never see her in action, yet by the story?s end, when the tragedy of her life is revealed, her life, or rather, her descent into animated decay, has come to dominate the story. Yet over this looms another, more hidden figure, that of her father. His control of Miss Emily is only hinted at in a couple of places, yet the insidiousness of it permeates the action of the story. Faulkner?s use of allusion in regard to Miss Emily?s father (and apparently, his own role as another symbol of the fading post-war generation) tinges ?A Rose for Emily? with an allegorical quality (one that Faulkner once noted was the origin for the ?rose? in the story?s title; even the most destitute deserve that ?rose? of respect).

Each of the elements discussed above combine to create an absorbing read that rewards the reader who pauses and reflects upon each sentence, as there is so much occurring under the surface of the narrative. Miss Emily is a fascinating character and the background townspeople serve to underscore the divisions and social changes that are taking place around the core tragedy of this story.? When compared to As I Lay Dying, ?A Rose for Emily? is not as experimental, as we see no use of stream of consciousness or multiple point of view narrators, yet it complements well that novel?s exploration of duty in the face of near-farcical happenstance, not to mention that like Addie, Emily here is defined as much in how she dies as in how she lived.? Before re-reading both stories, this connection was not readily apparent, but upon further consideration, it could be argued that what drives both of these 1930 Faulkner tales is a sense of absence.? Addie is departing and yet in dying she relentless drives the family that she mostly resents toward a discovery of life that they might not otherwise have made.? Emily has long departed life before she breathes her final breath, yet despite the absence of a direct point of view of hers, her unspoken ?voice? dominates the story.? Taken together, As I Lay Dying and ?A Rose for Emily? complement each other and showcase Faulkner?s burgeoning talent to depict setting and its effects on character (and vice versa) in an honest and moving fashion.

Should I Pay The Closing Costs? | REALTOR.com? Blogs

questions

Q: I signed up to buy a home on a short sell through the VA. The agent told me that the bank will pay the closing cost, also I were told by the loan officer that I will probably will get money back at closing. Now the real estate agent says,I have to pay all the closing cost. She told this to me on Friday night and then proceeded to say I need to close on the following Tuesday. This is my first time buying a home and I need help. I have limited funds and knowledge about buying a home and want to avoid the ?country wide ?type of deal. I were told by everyone that I have to rely on my agent who said this happen because she didn?t put the closing cost in with the offer she sent to the bank. What can I do other than take her word and pay the closing cost?
?Anonymous, Desoto, TX

A: My biggest concern is that the agent tells you that the bank will pay the closing costs, then tells you at the last minute that she forgot(?) to put the closing costs in the offer she sent to the bank, and now you will be paying more than you thought you would for the house. Only you can decide whether you love the house enough, and are willing and able to come up with the extra cash to complete the purchase. If that will cause you hardship, you are not obligated to close. You should discuss this with the agent and the agent?s managing broker. You have referred to her as your agent, which implies that she should be working in your best interests. If her negligence did indeed cost you money, you might consider asking her to contribute her commission toward the closing costs. If she refuses, you can file a complaint with the real estate division in your state. You should not suffer due to her oversight.

A: On the short sale approval letter it will state the exact amount that the bank has approved to pay. If any amounts approved are less than the actually amount owed than the buyer will be responsible to pay in order to close. You can always request a copy of the approval letter to know exactly what will was approved to be be paid.

Also, I would suggest you ask to review a copy of the closing statement (known as HUD-1). This will show what the buyer and seller pays and how much is due at closing.

Hurricane Sandy hits travel, cargo operations; costs unclear

(Reuters) - Transportation ground to a halt along the Northeast coast on Monday, stranding local rail commuters, cruise passengers and air travelers from as far away as Europe and Asia, as Hurricane Sandy prompted closure of air, ship, rail and even highway service.

The transport woes also hit cargo operations, adding another dimension to the storm's economic toll.

New Jersey's Garden State Parkway, which has been ranked among the busiest U.S. toll roads, was closed Monday in both directions along its southern 63 miles because of flooding.

Massive cargo container operations in New York and New Jersey shut down very early Monday, and will stay closed indefinitely, the port authority said, stranding millions of dollars worth of goods arriving for the holiday season.

The cost of the cargo disruptions probably won't be large, said Arthur Hatfield, managing director of equity Research at Raymond James in Memphis, Tenn. While cargo gets backed up it eventually gets delivered. "Nothing disappears," he said.

"The only time we've ever seen a storm that had a lasting or immediate impact on logistics and or freight volumes was Katrina," he added. Sandy is a Category 1 hurricane, he noted. "You've got to remember Katrina was a Category 5 and the storm surge was something they'd never seen."

CSX Corp the nation's second-largest publicly owned railroad company, shut its network between Richmond, Va., and Albany, N.Y., early Monday. The closure included Boston and extended as far west as Brunswick, Md.

Norfolk Southern Corp said rail traffic from Virginia through New England could be affected by flooding and high winds, and told customers to expect delays of at least 72 hours.

Some freight companies said they would keep working where it was possible. "We're going to be doing operations as long as we possibly can, as far as pickup and delivery goes," said Chris Stanley, spokesman for FedEx Corp, the second-largest package delivery company in the U.S. "If we are able to safely move, we will."

United Parcel Service Inc began rerouting packages and airplanes over the weekend. On Monday it suspended delivery in Delaware, Maryland and Washington, D.C., but dispatched delivery trucks in Manhattan, Connecticut, Westchester County, Nassau County and Suffolk County.

In New Jersey, UPS sent out about half of its drivers Monday, and most drivers continued working in New England. Operations were normal in Pittsburgh, central Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia, except along the coast. UPS said it was planning for significant snow in some areas.

It's "too soon to put any dollars around impacts or to look at any specific sectors," said Susan Rosenberg, a spokeswoman for UPS.

Airlines canceled more than 11,500 flights for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, including more than 6,800 so far Monday alone, Flight-tracking service FlightAware said.

The tracking service said it expected that figure to grow as the storm hits later Monday. Philadelphia's airport was the hardest hit, with 1,220 cancellations on Monday. The service said the three New York area airports had each canceled about 1,000 flights for Monday.

New York and Washington, D.C., area airports remained open even though flights have been canceled.

The Federal Aviation Authority said Monday that air traffic control towers were closed at regional airports: Hartford-Brainard and Groton-New London in Connecticut; Northeast Philadelphia in Pennsylvania; Atlantic City and Trenton, New Jersey; and New Castle, Delaware.

United Continental Holdings, the world's largest air carrier, canceled 3,700 flights for Sunday through Wednesday, or about 16 percent of total flights scheduled during that period, because of the storm, a spokesman said on Monday.

Delta Air Lines said it canceled approximately 2,100 flights from Sunday night through Tuesday morning.

Transportation consultant George Hamlin estimated that Sandy could cost the airline industry hundreds of millions of dollars. On top of lost flight revenue, airlines likely will have to pay their crews extra if they are stranded away from home base.

"If you cancel a day or two's flights, it may take some people days to get to where they want to go," he said.

New York suspended service on mass-transit systems for New York, Long Island, Staten Island and Metro-North. PATH train service between New York and New Jersey also was suspended.

Amtrak canceled service along the Northeast corridor for Monday, and nearly all service along the Eastern seaboard, through Tuesday.

Carnival Corp canceled two departures, from Chesapeake Bay and Norfolk, Va., because of the storm and shifted departures of other cruise ships.

Hotel reservations desks hummed with calls from thousands of stranded travelers, seeking to either cancel or find accommodation around major cities in the Northeast.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc - which operates hotels such as Westin, Sheraton - and Marriott International Inc hotel groups received numerous calls about New York reservations.

"A lot of people are cancelling," a reservations employee said, but said others are coming because the hotels have power generators.

"People are really just frightened of the storm ... they're frightened of water levels and they're frightened of losing power and they want to be somewhere where they're safe," the employee said.

A reservations worker for Marriott said her work day had been "really crazy" with all the calls for cancellations and last-minute reservations, including calls from corporations booking blocks of rooms for their employees.

Corporate representatives for Starwood and Marriott were not immediately available for comment Sunday.

(AP) ? The New Jersey National Guard arrived Tuesday evening in Hoboken to help residents of the heavily flooded city on the Hudson River across from New York City.

Officials announced the Guard's arrival in messages on the city's Twitter and Facebook accounts. It says Guard members will use high-wheeled vehicles to help evacuate residents and deliver supplies to flooded areas in the mile-square city.

Hoboken was hard hit by Superstorm Sandy, which flooded roughly half the town of 50,000 people.

Mayor Dawn Zimmer had asked for the Guard's help late Monday, saying thousands of residents were stuck in their homes.

"We have two payloaders and we're trying to go in where we can to help people, but we have small city streets and payloaders cannot fit down" them, Zimmer said Tuesday night on MSNBC.

"We've got live wires in the waters, and the waters are completely contaminated and getting more contaminated," she said. "It's rain water mixed with sewage water; it's becoming more sewage water."

Hoboken resident Polina Pinkhasova, a 27-year-old engineering student, has been volunteering at a shelter in the city, where water is still 3 feet deep in spots and the power remains out.

"Once the sun sets, complete darkness," she told The Associated Press. "You really can't see anything."

Her house is on dry land, but she has seen evidence of price-gouging, saying she paid $14 at one store for three small bags of chips and a small bottle of cranberry juice, both expired.

P.J. Molski, a 25-year-old graphic designer who lives in Hoboken, said that his place is dry but that his car, which he left parked on a flooded street, won't start.

Almost every basement apartment he has seen in the small city, which makes the most of its housing stock, is flooded, he told the AP.

"There are just pumps going all over the city of people trying to get the water out of their basement apartments," he said.

Assassin's Creed 3

Assassin's Creed 3 is the final chapter in the story of Desmond Miles, the once-reluctant assassin, who with the help of his ancestors and the animus may be the key to saving the world. Did I mention this game takes place during the American Revolution? It's a lot to take in but if Assassin's Creed 3 delivers, it will be the ultimate conclusion to a thrilling story.

If you're worried, let Morgan Webb ease you off that ledge before you jump into a pile of hay. This game delivers and then some. Find out why in our Assassin's Creed 3 Review.

"This game has a ridiculous amount of content. There are whole portions of the game and major mechanics that I haven?t even mentioned here. There are endless collectables that you actually want to collect, like peg leg trinkets that open up pirate-style searches for hidden treasure. There are hidden forts that need to be liberated, chests that need to be looted, and citizens that need to be saved. There are missions to liberate zones in both New York and Boston that eventually let you recruit new assassins to your cause. You then send these assassins on missions of their own, or just use one of their many modes, such as ambush, bodyguard, or marksman, to make your own life easier. The naval and land based missions are all replayable with additional objectives for full synchronization. There are multiple groups that each offer side challenges, such as a hunt for Bigfoot. If you want to unlock fast travel locations, you?re going to need to explore the extensive underground tunnels. Just when you think you?ve done everything, you find more fully voiced missions, more things to collect, and more bad guys to kill."

(AP) ? Crista Laughlin was a mile high and dry, but Superstorm Sandy still kept the 40-year-old Obama campaign volunteer from walking precincts or working the phones.

Instead, she was huddled inside her suburban Denver home, watching storm coverage on television and thinking about her grandson in Norfolk, Va., in the hurricane's path. "I'm actually with the president on this one: The election will take care of itself in a week. What's on our minds is the people," said Laughlin, a 40-year-old volunteer in Aurora, Colo.

The presidential election was, well, rained out Monday ? from the media centers and storm-battered battleground states of the Atlantic coast to the arid, high plains suburbia of Colorado. Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan canceled three Colorado appearances scheduled for Tuesday as the Romney's campaign announced it was suspending political events featuring the top of its ticket. Meanwhile, President Barack Obama scrapped his own Tuesday appearances ? including one in Colorado ? and fled a Monday morning rally in Florida to make it back to the White House before the storm.

The president's campaign emailed supporters urging them to donate to charities that help storm victims. In Romney campaign offices, volunteers cut into their phone-banking and door-knocking time to stockpile canned goods to send to the disaster zone. The storm gave Obama a chance to appear presidential during a national emergency, and challenger Mitt Romney a potential opening should the federal government botch the response.

It also had a political impact thousands of miles away, giving people like Roger Draeger a break.

The 75-year-old funeral driver from Fort Atkinson, Wis., is a Romney supporter, but he was glad both candidates suspended their campaigns Monday. It was a blessed reprieve from the nonstop political debate that has dominated Wisconsin since Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill limiting collective bargaining for state workers last year, triggering a long series of recall elections.

Still, like other residents of this poll-obsessed nation, Draegar quickly began to analyze the upsides and downsides for each candidate, saying both should be visible in the aftermath. Obama "really needs to show a lot of compassion for all those states and cities," he said.

It's a sign of how thoroughly the campaign has permeated swing-state life that Dan Guimond, 61, an economist in Denver, was partly getting his hurricane updates through the political-junkie website Real Clear Politics and The New York Times blog FiveThirtyEight. Guimond is worried about his parents, who live in Massachusetts, but not worried about how the storm could affect the race. "Obama canceled his, what, 26th trip to Colorado? Big deal," he said.

A modicum of politics still continues here. Former President Bill Clinton and Jill Biden, the vice president's wife, were still slated to campaign in Colorado on Tuesday, and the Romney campaign sent the candidate's son Craig to an early vote event Monday afternoon. The president, notably, is scheduled to return to Colorado Thursday. Still, some of his supporters said they may not be able to do as much for him.

Mitt Romney held what his campaign called a "storm relief event" in Ohio Tuesday. His wife, Ann, will help gather donations at campaign offices in Wisconsin and Iowa Tuesday before a Des Moines, Iowa, rally. The Romney campaign also announced Ryan will drop by a donation drive in Wisconsin.

Denver Pastor Leon Emerson, head of the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance, spent the weekend rallying voters for Obama with actor Laurence Fishburne. But he expects Sunday talks at church to focus less on the upcoming election and more on the storm.

"I'll eventually talk about the election, but I may not put as much emphasis on it, depending how this hurricane turns out," Emerson said. "Politics is one thing, but you know what? We're going to keep our attention on helping mankind."

Emerson said his congregation is shifting focus, too.

"We had some plans today and tomorrow, going door to door. It's still going on, but not with the intensity we had, because people want to make sure their loved ones are OK," said Emerson, who has a niece in Hampton, Va.

Some weary swing state voters didn't think the political lull would mean much. "I'm sure the TV commercials aren't going to stop," said Mike Beauregard, a Republican-leaning Independent who owns a cooking utensil shop in Concord, NH.

Others were fixated on images of the storm but still saw the devastation through the prism of the election. In western Wisconsin, at the bustling student union at the University of Wisconsin in River Falls, a television tuned to cable news showed ominous images of the storm. History major Mike Engelhardt, 21, said Obama had the most on the line.

"If he bungles the beginning of the cleanup, that will move a lot of votes to Romney," Engelhardt predicted.

One place the storm may have an impact is North Carolina, where Democrats are hoping new voters who cast their ballots early will overcome the GOP's traditional Election Day advantage at the polls. Rain from the storm shuttered some early voting locations Sunday, and election officials were concerned that heavy snow in the western mountains could make it even harder to get to polling places early.

"The weather could chill participation," state election executive director Gary Bartlett said.

Democrats are counting on running up an edge in early votes in other swing states as well ? ones that lie outside the storm's path but were still on the minds of Romney supporters in sunny Davenport, Iowa, where the Republican candidate made a final Monday afternoon appearance.

Tim Vath of Dubuque said he didn't think the storm would fundamentally disrupt the election. But he did worry that any bad weather now might increase the magnitude of any early-voting advantage Democrats might have.

"Perhaps it could freeze that advantage in place. I doubt it would determine the outcome in those states," said Vath. "At least, I hope not."

As Sandy rumbled past the tiny Chesapeake Bay hamlet of North, Va., William Sullivan, 76, swung by the town's main building, which holds the post office, bait shop and convenience store. Sullivan trashed two-thirds the mail stuffing his post office box, mainly glossy political brochures from both sides.

"Makes me sick to my stomach thinking of the millions of dollars these characters have spent to get elected," Sullivan said before heading back out into the rain. He doubted the dramatics surrounding the storm would change the minds of his rural neighbors. "People have their minds made up," he said.

In downtown Denver, it was sunny and in the 60s as Jeremy LeVal, a Romney supporter, waited at a bus stop. He confessed he has paid limited attention to both the campaign and the storm. He knew the hurricane was bearing down on the Northeast and hoped there was no major damage, but doubted the brief suspension of the presidential contest would matter.

"If people haven't decided at this point," LeVal said, "it probably won't make a difference."

Crock Pot Chicken and Wild Rice | Wishes and Dishes

I?ve been very neglectful of my blog lately and it?s not happy at all with me, so I?m going to fix that today and make it happy again.? Yes, my blog has feelings :) ? I had a really busy week last week ? we got a lot done at our new house, little odds and ends.? Every little thing we need that finally gets bought or one more picture that gets hung on the walls makes me feel very accomplished and organized.? The house is really coming along!? We also finally bought a computer desk for our office/den which I will appreciate a lot after working on this card table for the past six weeks.? These chairs are just not made to be sat on for hours at a time ? the cushioning just is not there.

What did you do this weekend?? We had friends over Friday night to see our new house and I made a couple desserts: pumpkin butterscotch cookies and chocolate chip biscotti (recipe to come).? It?s nice to finally have a place to invite people over and have room to be comfortable and spread out.? Being in an apartment for 6.5 years really made me appreciate having a house even more than ever.? I feel like I?m living in a mansion!? Just the simplest things we were never able to do before, like being able to have friends over and hang out.? I?m loving it!? Sunday night we had tickets to the Chris Tomlin concert here in Rochester.? We?ve had the tickets since August as they were a birthday gift for Mr. Wishes and he finally got to ?cash in? on his gift.? It was a great concert!? We have seen Chris Tomlin a few different times and he never disappoints.

Chris Tomlin and All Sons and Daughters Concert at Roberts Wesleyan College

A totally awesome picture Mr. Wishes took at the concert. We had great seats!

This slow cooker dish is a ?gotta try? for these cold months we are coming upon (or cold weather plus hurricanes we have come upon if you live on the east coast).? It?s so easy and makes your house smell wonderful.? This was the first slow cooker meal I?ve made in a long time.? I go in phases where sometimes I?ll use it like crazy and then I?ll forget about it for months and months at a time.? Then when I come back to it I always wonder why I stayed away so long :) ? They make for the easiest meals and are my favorite way to cook meat, as it always comes out super tender.? It?s so nice to throw everything together and not have to worry about dinner for the rest of the day!? You can easily double this recipe if you?re feeding a large family.

Everyone in hurricane Sandy?s path ? stay safe and stay dry.? I?m going to share one of my new favorite cookie recipes with you later on this week so long as I don?t get blown away by this hurricane.? Fingers crossed!

Crock Pot Chicken and Wild Rice. Easy and cheap slow cooker meal!

It tastes so much better than it looks!

INGREDIENTS:

4 chicken breasts (Can use fewer, can use bone-in or boneless)
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 onion, chopped
1 package (8 oz) fresh mushrooms, sliced (optional)
1 box Long Grain and Wild Rice with Seasonings (I use Uncle Ben?s)

DIRECTIONS:

Place chicken in bottom of slow cooker. Sprinkle chopped onion and mushrooms over top. Top with cream soup. Cover and cook on low 6-7 hours (mine was done cooking in? 5 because it cooks REALLY hot, so make sure you know your slow cooker. You will learn through experience whether to decrease or increase cooking times.).? Cook rice according to package directions. Before serving, stir rice in. Serve hot.

Can cook rice the night before and place in refrigerator. Before serving, stir cold rice in and let cook for another ten minutes or until rice is heated through.

What Is Writing Disorder? ? An Overview | Speech Therapy

My younger brother has always had trouble writing. He never liked writing and even today he prefers to use a keyboard or asks his manager to write things for him. Only recently did we come to know that he has Writing Disorder when my psychologist friend visited us. Dad always blamed him for being too lazy, though he is the smartest of us all. Spelling errors, word space is random, suddenly writes in uppercase, the slanting of the letters is inconsistent, and he feels totally exhausted and tired after writing a single paragraph.

What Is Writing Disorder?
It is a neurological disorder that affects a child?s writing abilities and he or she finds it difficult to form and write words in correct form even after sufficient time and training. Writing becomes a difficult and laborious task for these children. It is also called as Dysgraphia.
This disorder does not interfere with a child?s ability to understand, read, speak, or process the information. The child?s intelligence is also not affected by this impaired ability.

Causes:
Following are some of the reasons this disorder could be a result of, but in adults it is usually due to some damage to the parietal lobe of the brain.

  • Weak muscle coordination while writing.
  • Problem with fine motor skills.
  • Injury to the part of the brain that controls motor skills.
  • In some cases it could be hereditary.
  • Strokes.
  • Illness or damage to the brain.

Symptoms:
Following are the signs that may help one understand and identify a child with dysgraphia problem.

  • The handwriting is cursive, not very clear and is hard to read and understand.
  • It is full of spelling errors, wrong spaces, and the shape, size of the letters varies drastically.
  • Introduces upper case and lower case in the writing randomly.
  • Has trouble with punctuation.
  • Words are wrongly spelt, spaced, or are left unfinished.
  • They face a difficulty gripping pen or pencil while writing and usually complain about wrist pain.
  • Very oddly they place the pen, paper, and position the body while writing.
  • Writing is slow, and it is tedious for them to copy things from black board.

Help For This Disorder:
It would be of immense help for the children with this disorder if they are not labeled as being lazy and be allowed to use some writing aid like a keyboard.

  • Allow the child to use a word processor to write.
  • Provide some writing aid or pencil gripping tool for better writing.
  • Let the child use a tape recorder to learn the lessons.
  • Do not burden the child with assignments to write. Take oral tests or video tests instead.
  • Give them printed notes to prepare from, instead of asking them to copy from the board.
  • Though the normal intelligence of the child remains unaffected, it could be depressing for the child and enough motivation, and counseling should be provided.

These are a few signs, causes, and suggestions on writing disorder which can be followed to help the child overcome the problem. If you feel your child is suffering from this problem take the help of a therapist.

Google Nexus 4 hands-on (video)

Google Nexus 4 handson

So here it is at last, the Nexus 4. After countless leaks we finally got a chance to put our dirty little paws on Google and LG's lovechild. The verdict? It's simply phenomenal. By combining the nicest elements of the Optimus G with the latest iteration of Jelly Bean (Android 4.2) the two companies have created something that's better than the sum of its parts. Like its cousin, the Nexus 4 is built around Qualcomm's snappy 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdradon S4 Pro SoC with Adreno 320 graphics and 2GB of RAM. Storage comes in 8GB and 16GB flavors with no microSD expansion. It features the same lovely 4.7-inch 1280x768-pixel IPS display but sheds LTE support for an unlocked pentaband DC-HSPA+ (42Mbps) radio and wireless charging. On the camera front the Nexus 4 inherits the Optimus G's optional eight-megapixel BSI sensor and f/2.4 autofocus lens, instead of the slightly fancier 13 MP shooter. WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, NFC, Miracast plus a sealed 2100mAh Li-polymer battery complete the package.

Aesthetically, the Nexus 4 blends aspects of the Optimus G and Galaxy Nexus designs, with a glass-covered back and rounded-off top and bottom edges. This phone looks and feels great -- materials and build quality are much improved over last year's handset. At 9.1mm (0.36 inches) thin and 131g (0.31 pounds), it's also very comfortable in hand. Most of the controls are unchanged from its relative -- standard 3.5mm headphone jack and secondary mic on top, volume rocker and micro-SIM tray on the left, micro-USB port and primary mic on the bottom and power / lock button on the right side. The Optimus G's capacitive keys give way to on-screen buttons and the LED notification light moves below the screen (from its former position near the 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera). Overall we're really impressed with the Nexus 4, and that's just the hardware. Sadly, we spent very little time with the software, which includes a plethora of improvements.

You'll be able to purchase a Nexus 4 unlocked in the Play Store starting November 13th for $299 (8GB), $349 (16GB) or $199 with two-year contract on T-Moble (16GB). Stay tuned for our review and until then, take a look at our gallery below and hit the break for our hands-on video.

Nail brings new vision to Rawls Business College | Lubbock Online ...

Since being named Dean of Rawls Business College in June, Lance Nail has committed himself to ensuring the Texas Tech business program becomes a high-quality national research university.

Nail previously served as dean of the University of Southern Mississippi?s College of Business for four years, where he restructured the college?s internal and external relations, increased private giving and directed a revamping of the college?s undergraduate and graduate curricula.

Nail also took on the task of implementing a five-year strategic plan for USM' business school, and is using that plan as the model for the strategic plan of Rawls.

?I am not sure everyone realizes how great the opportunity for Rawls to become a comprehensive research university really is,? Nail said. ?This is the time not only for Rawls, but for Texas Tech and Lubbock in general.?

One of the many things that attracted Nail to Texas Tech is the relationship between the faculty, staff and students. ?There is a very synergisitc relationship that will allow us to build the program?s technological capabilities, and create a very rich experience for everyone involved.?

Right away, Nail was impressed with the students of Rawls.

?These are some of the hardest working students with the best work ethic I have ever encountered.? Much of that work ethic Nail attributes to the culture of West Texas. ?When you couple the roll-up-your shirtsleeves working mentality of our students with business skills and knowledge, it makes for a very powerful graduate.?

The quality of people found at Rawls aren?t the only thing the school has to offer. The facility also houses some of the most advanced technology to be found in business oriented higher education.

A large auditorium offers a 108-panel video presentation screen, which can allow for each of the panels to be a separate live video feed.

?This provides the functionality of creating opportunity for global education,? said Nail. ?We could actually divide the screen into quadrants, allowing for interactive video conferencing between someone in China, someone in the Middle East, land men in the field here, an oil executive and students present in the auditorium.?

Nail began strategic planning at Rawls immediately upon accepting his position as dean. ?The first year of the process will include meeting with the 160 faculty members to get their opinions on what our strengths, weaknesses and threats are,? Nail explained.

Nail has also spent time meeting with students and alumni during this initial phase.

?We are building a collective vision. Once we have completed this strategic listening phase, and the research has been assessed, we will have a better understanding of our needs. We can then take the information we have gathered to our stakeholders and begin developing strategy to ensure that Rawls will ascend in ranks in terms of research, scholarship and leadership and ultimately be known as a destination choice for recruiters across the nation.

Tech and Rawls Business College have a tremendous impact on the local economy, Nail said.

?We will be working with the Economic Development Alliance to strengthen our relationship and maximize our contribution to the local economic climate. We have a very robust environment compared to the rest of the country. The diverse economic base, entrepreneurial spirit and what I call the ?reverse brain drain? all contribute to the growth this area is experiencing. Texas has a very pro-business environment and a certain independence that attracts businesses and industry. All of these things are beneficial to the growth and development of the programs at Rawls. Graduates will then, in turn, benefit the local economy. It is a very exciting cycle to be a part of .?

Nexus 4 leaked on video, Android 42 gets exposed alongside new LG hardware

There ain't much here we haven't seen before, but look -- it's a video. The thoroughly leaked LG Nexus 4 -- which was likely scheduled to be formally unveiled today if not for Hurricane Sandy -- has shown up in a 107 second video hosted up by Swedroid. We're guessing that select international sites briefed on the handset weren't hearing any of that "delay" stuff, and have instead let loose on the material they had access to. The hardware itself is no surprise, boasting clean lines and a minimalistic motif that looks a hair thicker than we had envisioned before. Android 4.2 looks right at home, though -- as if you haven't seen enough of that in the Nexus 10 leak. Head on past the break and press play, won't you?

HTC 8X Review Windows Phone 8's compact flagship

It feels like forever since Microsoft announced Windows Phone 8 back in June, but the mobile OS is finally here and with it comes the inaugural volley of compatible handsets. The first one to cross our desks is the global, unlocked version of HTC's Windows Phone 8X, a device we first saw in September. Unlike other current flagships, this phone breaks the bigger-is-better trend by providing a full set of high-end specs in a relatively compact package -- combining a 4.3-inch 720p Super LCD 2 display, Qualcomm dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor and NFC in a sleek and colorful package. Does the 8X have what it takes to carry the Windows Phone 8 torch? Is this a bona fide flagship despite its reduced footprint? Has HTC designed a better handset than its existing Android superphone, the One X? Find out in our review after the break.

Top 10 Considerations When Integrating Social Media

Social media icons on a screen

In a world where the instant access to information has changed the way people in modern society communicate and collaborate, social media tools and social networking for many have become a paradigm that permeates their personal and professional lives. As a result, social media tools are partially responsible for introducing to the marketplace a new workforce and customer base that is challenging conventional methods of conducting business. In response to these changes, many organisations are re-evaluating the manner in which they share information among their workforce and respond to the demands of their customers.

At the heart of this new reality lies the project management world that heavily relies on the ability to effectively share and communicate project statuses to avoid bottlenecks and ensure success. Employing the best methods and technology is key to any successful project management environment. Although it is true that social media is one of the most popular new forms to communicate, project management organisations need to be cognizant of both the dangers and benefits that go along with this new technology. Before jumping on the ?Social Media? bandwagon you need to gauge your readiness for successful adoption and make a well-informed decision that is aligned with your business goals and culture.

To help you evaluate your own project management organisation?s alignment with social media tools you should ask yourself the following questions:

1. Are you ready to develop a social media strategy?

Unlike other collaboration tools, social media tools require a strategic plan that will ensure that you can maximise its benefits of increasing productivity and avoid its danger of sharing the wrong information with the wrong project stakeholders. For this very reason alone, developing a social media plan can mean the difference between improving customer engagement and hurting existing customer relationships.

2. What types of projects are you managing?

Depending on the nature of your typical projects social media tools can create pollution that will hurt progress. For example, highly sensitive projects that requires the selective sharing of information among stakeholders should employ a more closed network and controlled flow of information that is in direct contradiction to the more transparent and fluid information exchange resulting from social media technology.

3. Is your industry and people in line with the benefits of social media?

Certain industries can greatly benefit from social media technology while others will discover that its misaligned with their business. For example, new product development and marketing groups can leverage the benefits of better visibility and knowledge sharing, while the legal industry may discover that the unstructured natured of information capture by social media can hurt their processes.

4. Would you classify your organisation as early adopters of technology?

Organisations need to gauge their readiness for progressive technology offered up by social media. If the business is resistant to adopt new technology the chances for success will be slim.

5. Do you currently use any social media tools for projects?

The informal use of social media tools is typically a good indicator that your organisation will successfully embrace a Social PPM strategy that is in line with your current collaboration tools.

6. Do you encourage transparency with project information?

Social media tools inherently encourage the transparency in sharing information. When implementing a Social PPM strategy an organisation needs to be selective in integrating the best social media tools that will reveal the right information to the right stakeholders.

7. Do you work with dispersed and remote project teams? Are mobile devices integral to your project workforce?

Organisations with decentralised project teams that regularly collaborate and work from multiple locations can quickly benefit from the ?on the go? nature delivered by social media tools designed to be access via multiple mobile platforms.

8. How effective is your current collaboration platform?

As the expression goes, ?If it ain?t broke, don?t fix it.? It is important to evaluate how well your current collaboration and communication platform is functioning. If you are seeking room for improvement, by all means investigate what social media can offer your organisation. However, the introduction of new tools may introduce new problems. It is critical to assess the risk versus reward of social media and how it will ultimately impact your business as a whole.

9. Is collaborative document sharing mature in your organisation?

Prior to adopting the latest collaboration tools offered up by social media, it is critical to assess your current collaboration platform. In a project-centric environment social media tools are more effective when they are able to enhance an already existent collaboration environment that delivers robust web and document management capabilities to its current workforce.

10. Is your project organisation resistant to change?

With the introduction of any new process or technology the change management question cannot be ignored. Including a change management component as part of the Social PPM strategy can mean the difference between the smooth adoption and a painful rejection of the new tool sets.

Self Improvement | Do You Know What Relaxation Really Feels Like ...

By Shirley R Patterson -

Our life has become hectic and hurried. Always on the go. Eating while driving, on the phone while grocery shopping, listening to the news while typing a report. We finish one day and it rolls into the next. We know the importance of giving our bodies a break, but how often do we actually give in to total relaxation?

During her consultation, a recent client reported that she has been so tense for so long she doesn?t know what it feels like to relax. She doubted she could even do so. She did not realize that being tense all the time became a habit for her. She came to me as a last resort. Her doctor wanted to prescribe her muscle relaxers if she could not find another way . As Dr. Rachel Copelan states, When all else fails, when pills and potions leave side effects more detrimental than the original ailment, intelligent people reach inward to the source of the disturbance. Employing hypnosis during a Stress Relaxation session, this client was able to relax for the first time in a long time. She was so grateful, but I assured her, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. I just led her through the process.

While in hypnosis, the body feels as if it is in suspended animation. All the muscles are relaxed. All the while, the mind is alert and processing the suggestions it is being given. The body feels truly rested after a Stress Relaxation session. Sometimes we do not realize how much tension we are carrying until we do something to reduce the tension in our bodies.

We release stress hormones such as cortisol and or norepinephrine during periods of high stress. In our high stress society, our bodies stress response is overworked so often our bodies have a hard time returning to normal. Finding ways to reduce the stress from our bodies should be a main concern.

Do yourself (or a loved one) a favor. Schedule an appointment with a Certified Hypnotherapist for a Stress Relaxation hypnosis session. You?ll be amazed with the results.
