Europe's bold rescue plan still awaiting details

(AP) ? Europe's leaders surprised skeptics with a bold plan to pump cash into troubled banks, reduce borrowing costs for Italy and Spain and stop forcing austerity on every government that needs aid.

Now their finance ministers have a week and a half to work out a lot of the details, and investors will be paying close attention.

Financial markets liked the broad outlines of the plans that emerged Friday from a meeting of the leaders of the 27 European Union countries.

Markets roared their approval after the EU leaders declared they would:

? Centralize regulation of European banks and, if necessary, bail them out directly, instead of funneling loans through governments that already have too much debt.

? Ease borrowing costs on Italy and Spain, the euro region's third- and fourth-largest economies.

? Stop mandating painful budget cuts to every country in need of emergency financial aid.

?Tie their budgets, currency and governments more tightly.

The decisions made at the EU summit in Brussels won't end the crisis that has gripped Europe for nearly three years. Plenty of questions remain about how the bank bailouts would work, whether there's enough money committed to rescue banks and governments and whether impoverished, indebted Greece will be forced out of the 17-nation euro club.

But for EU leaders who have consistently underwhelmed their exasperated publics and nervous financial markets, Friday's efforts marked a breakthrough.

The prime minister of Ireland ? one of the five eurozone countries that have required emergency funds ? said the plans marked a "seismic shift in European policy." British Prime Minister David Cameron said that "for the first time in some time we have actually seen steps ... to get ahead of the game."

There was an immediate sign that Europe's latest plan was easing fear in financial markets: The cost for the troubled government of Spain to borrow fell dramatically. The interest rate, or yield, on the country's 10-year bonds fell by more than half a percentage point, to 6.34 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average recorded its second-biggest gain of the year, and stocks advanced even further in Europe ? in strong and weak countries alike. The benchmark stock index in Germany rose 4.3 percent, by far its best performance this year. Germany has the biggest economy in Europe, and a warm reaction there was a crucial sign of approval for the plan. Prices for oil and other commodities shot higher, another sign that the plan may remove a big barrier to a healthier economy.

David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Funds, says financial markets have been slow to respond to good news about Europe, including an election Greece that empowered pro-euro leaders. That means markets could continue to rise, despite lingering problems.

"The point is, ugly is more than priced in," he said.

At first it looked like the summit would produce little more than a modest plan to stimulate growth in Europe. But Italy and Spain, whose borrowing costs have soared to dangerous levels, refused to sign off on the $150 billion spending plan unless something was done to ease their financial burdens.

After an all-night standoff, the leaders agreed to expand the use of Europe's bailout funds ? and do so without imposing strict austerity measures on countries that are meeting existing pledges to control spending. The bailout money could be used to buy bonds to drive down a country's borrowing costs. Or it could be loaned directly to troubled banks, which EU leaders said would help break "the vicious cycle" in which weak banks and weak governments threaten to drag each other down.

Previously, European leaders insisted that the two bailout funds be used only to rescue governments ? like Ireland, Portugal and Greece. If money was going to be used for troubled banks, it had to first go to a government. But that added to the debt on a government's books because it was responsible for repaying the money.

The bids to rescue banks ended up raising fears about the ailing governments; Spain's borrowing costs rose dramatically two weeks ago after the eurozone countries agreed to lend it $125 billion to rescue its banks.

The EU also called for a single regulator ? probably the European Central Bank ? to oversee Europe's banks. Currently, banks are regulated by their national governments and some countries have been slow to recognize loan problems and shut down their worst banks.

As part of a broad "banking union," the new regulator will likely get power to close failing banks if their national regulators won't do it. The plan is also expected to include deposit insurance across Europe. Individual European countries now insure bank deposits within their borders. But bank failures could overwhelm those national funds.

The bank overhaul is supposed to be completed by the end of the year.

Finance ministers from the 17 countries that use the euro are supposed to work out many of the details at a July 9 meeting.

The leaders said they were committed to linking their countries closer together economically and politically, but didn't discuss how. Such integration would likely require countries to give up some of their taxing and spending powers to a European budget authority.

Most analysts cheered the EU plans but worried about the questions left unanswered. And they said the bailout funds are too small to handle the tasks that could be thrown at them.

Europe's two bailout funds have a combined $625 billion in lending power; up to $125 billion of that is already committed to helping Spain bail out its banks. The remaining $500 billion looks small compared with $3.1 trillion in Spanish and Italian bonds outstanding.

Europe doesn't just have a government debt crisis. It has a banking crisis, too. A collapse in housing prices buried Spanish and Irish banks in bad real estate loans. At the same time, banks across Europe have been the biggest buyers of their governments' bonds. So as yields have surged and the bonds have declined in value, banks have suffered losses.

The solution hovering in the background, say some economists, is the European Central Bank. The ECB could buy any amount of government bonds, backed if need be by the bank's theoretically limitless power to create money. So far the bank has been unwilling to take this step, which could violate its mandate to fight inflation and a ban on central bank financing of national governments.

Some analysts said the growing coordination among Europe's leaders could give ECB President Mario Draghi more wiggle room. "This gives the ECB cover to reward them for their good behavior," said Jay Bryson, an economist at Wells Fargo Securities.

The ECB's next policy meeting is Thursday in Frankfurt.

The summit deal leaves out crucial details of just how any bank bailouts would work. Would bank creditors have to take a loss on their investments, or would taxpayers foot the whole bill? The deal didn't specify.

If the banking regulator and a rescue fund take ownership stakes in failed banks, manage those stakes in the taxpayer interest while forcing losses on shareholders and creditors, it could be positive, said Clemens Fuest, an expert in public finance at Oxford University's Said Business School.

Otherwise, simply charging taxpayers could be "a huge burden on growth in Europe for a very long time," Clemens said.

Wooden Wallets. WTF? [Chatroom]

Over the past couple of months, wooden wallets have caught on as a trend in the design world. Like this one. Or this one. Or even this one. Aside from looking like they'd be an uncomfortable, cumbersome mass occupying your back pocket. they're kind of the antithesis of design. Design is supposed to address a need or improve on an idea. I'm not seeing it with these. Seriously, who really wants a wood wallet? Image Credit: Haydanhuya More »

Protein EWA3 helps disease resist chemotherapy

Ewing's sarcoma is a bone cancer commonly diagnosed in about 250 U.S. teenagers per year. If early chemotherapy is effective, improvement can be durable. But for children and teens who respond poorly to a first attempt at chemotherapy or if the disease spreads, long-term survival can be less than 10 percent.

A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published this week in the journal Molecular Cancer Research shows an important difference that may explain why some respond and some don't: the existence of high levels of the protein EYA3.

"First, levels of EYA3 could be a tool in offering an accurate prognosis and choosing how aggressively to treat Ewing's Sarcoma, and second we hope that by lowering levels of EYA3, we could help increase the effectiveness of existing therapies for Ewing's sarcoma," says Tyler Robin, PhD, first author of the recent paper.

Researchers recently defined the role of EYA3 as a DNA repair molecule and Tyler showed that EYA3 has a similar repair role in Ewing's sarcoma high levels of EYA3 help the tissue survive during and recover after treatment with chemotherapy. Importantly, when Robin knocked down EYA3 in Ewing's sarcoma cells, they became sensitized to chemotherapy.

"The genetic mutation that creates Ewing's sarcoma also leads to high levels of EYA3," says Heide Ford, PhD, investigator at the CU Cancer Center and associate professor in the CU School of Medicine department of ob/gyn, and the paper's senior author.

The mutation Ford refers to and that creates Ewing's sarcoma is the fusion of a gene from chromosome 22 to a gene in chromosome 11. Known as a EWS/FLI translocation, this mutation turns off a cell's ability to make another, intermediate step known as miR-708 a molecule that helps to decide what parts of the genome do and don't get read and manufactured into proteins. In healthy tissue, miR-708 turns off the production of EYA3; in Ewing's sarcoma, miR-708 is down and so EYA3 is up.

"Our next step is to test small molecule inhibitors against EYA3 to determine which inhibitors best sensitize Ewing's sarcomas to chemotherapy," says Ford.

Robin and Ford hope that recognizing EYA3 levels, reducing these levels directly, or intervening in the steps that lead to its over-production will help predict outcomes, make decisions about existing treatments, and eventually lead to new treatments for Ewing's sarcoma.

Business Critical Applications: Virtualizing SAP?it's a risk not to

There are business-critical applications?and then there?s SAP.? If you?re an IT manager in an SAP-based organization, you know first-hand the importance of this market-leading BCA system to every aspect of your operations.? Many large enterprises cannot run their businesses without SAP?it?s not just critical, it?s indispensable.

Is Virtualizing SAP Risky?

In years past, some IT managers were reluctant to virtualize SAP, and for good reasons.? The story is very different today, in part because of the increased emphasis on IT as a strategic function. A case in point is Hoya Corporation, a Tokyo-based manufacturer of optical products. Needing to respond more quickly to changes in the global marketplace, Hoya decided to become more agile in every aspect of its operations, including its SAP environment. ?Therefore, in November 2010, the company migrated its entire production SAP environment[1] to a private cloud based on VMware vSphere.

Hoya has been reaping the benefits ever since.? SAP operating costs have been cut by 75 percent. ?Peak workloads?for example, running consolidated financial reports?are handled much more effectively, thanks to streamlined provisioning.? The increased flexibility has allow the company to integrate several acquisitions with minimal disruption to ongoing operations. ?And Hoya is leveraging its virtualized SAP environment to add additional capabilities in the near future: enhanced disaster recovery/business continuity and a chargeback system for cost transparency.

Organizations Benefit from Virtualizing SAP

The pressure to ensure high availability is intense for SAP managers?even a few minutes of downtime can unleash a barrage of angry phone calls from frustrated users.? VMware virtualization takes advantage of SAP?s high-availability features to ensure that the software stays running?and the phones stay quiet.

Upgrades are a fact of life for every SAP landscape and they can be complex and time-consuming. Often they take hours or days in a non-virtualized platform?if you have the hardware available. In a virtual environment, new virtual machines can be provisioned in minutes, and then deprovisioned rapidly, recovering the resources. ???

As IT budgets continue to shrink, the imperative to lower operating costs gets more urgent?and virtualization can make a real difference. ?Server consolidation translates directly into lower costs for power, cooling, and space?and boosts the organizations ?green? profile in the bargain.

Timing the Move

Let?s say that you?ve decided to virtualize your SAP environment?now the question is timing.? In the course of helping literally thousands of customers make the transition from physical to virtual VMware has identified some opportune times to move.

A planned SAP upgrade can be a good time.? For example, Mazda took advantage of a planned move to SAP NetWeaver Process Integration to virtualize their entire SAP production environment[2]?and cut in half their capital expenses.

When approaching a hardware refresh, many customers take advantage of the changeover to consider a migration to virtualization at the same time.? Many system integrators know how to integrate the refresh and virtualization projects to minimize disruptions and combine staff training for new hardware and software.

New compliance and security imperatives often require substantial infrastructure changes, which can highlight the inherent inflexibility of the existing platform and persuade top management to invest in infrastructure.? In the wake of a natural or man-made disaster that impacts operations, top executives often order a review of the company?s disaster recovery/business continuity plans, exposing vulnerabilities that can be best addressed with virtualization.

About Oscar A. Aguirre, MD

Dr. Aguirre is a fellowship-trained urogynecologist who has dedicated his entire surgical career to the evaluation and management of vaginal relaxation and bladder/bowel disorders. Since early in his career, Dr. Aguirre has performed cosmetic gynecological procedures at the request of his urogynecologic patients. In 2006, he formally pursued his interest in the field of Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery (FGCS) under the supervision of world-renowned gynecologist, Dr. David Matlock of Beverly Hills. Dr. Matlock is the pioneer and developer of Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation? (LVR?) and Laser Reduction Labiaplasty. With this additional training, Dr. Aguirre became the third urogynecologist in the country to perform these aesthetic vaginal procedures and implement them at the time of urogynecological procedures to restore anatomical pelvic floor defects. He recently presented at The World Congress on Female and Male Cosmetic Genital Surgery attended by cosmetic vaginal surgeons from all over the world.

In May of 2011, Dr. Aguirre completed Hi Def Liposculpture body sculpting training, becoming the third surgeon in Denver to offer this procedure to his patients. He trained under Colorado?s own Dr. John Millard, president of the Advanced Body Sculpting Institute and a double-board certified plastic surgeon, internationally known for his expertise in leading-edge body sculpting procedures, and Dr. David Broadway, founder of the Broadway Center for plastic surgery and a triple-board certified plastic surgeon. Hi Def Liposculpture enables physicians who have already achieved advanced liposuction skill to further refine their skills and attain the highest level of body sculpting techniques. This includes fat grafting and transfer to various areas of the body that are depleted of volume, such as the buttocks and labia majora. This allows Dr. Aguirre to both sculpt and augment simultaneously, so as to perform the popular Brazilian Butt Augmentation. Hi Def Lipsculpture takes into consideration the patient?s anatomy and underlying musculature, focusing on the whole anatomy to create a work of art.

In November of 2011, Dr. Aguirre had the privilege of receiving training for minimally-invasive abdominoplasty with liposuction with the highly-esteemed, gynecologist and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Marco Pelosi II, who has been a prominent figure in women?s health since 1975. With this training, Dr. Aguirre has become a master of the specialized, highly-sought after technique and he is able to offer yet another expertise to his patients.

Dr. Aguirre is a preeminent pelvic surgeon who has been providing urogynecologic care for more than 15 years and is an expert in addressing both women?s functional and aesthetic concerns. Women who have concerns with the appearance of their vulvar or vaginal function should seek out the care of an experienced urogynecologic specialist, best suited to identify and treat the underlying problem. Dr. Aguirre has two extra years of training in vaginal and pelvic floor surgery compared to most other gynecologists who perform vaginal rejuvenation. Likewise, most plastic surgeons have had little, if any, vaginal surgery training. As an associate of the Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation Institute of America, Dr. Aguirre is trained to perform his procedures with the same techniques and skills pioneered by Dr. David Matlock, with his own touch based on his broad background in pelvic reconstructive surgery.

(AP) ? The scent of champagne is gone from the Miami Heat locker room. The streets of downtown have been cleaned up from the championship parade. The final team meeting has been held.

Not even a week after winning the NBA Finals, next year is already here for the Heat.

They hold the No. 27 pick in the draft on Thursday night, have a list of free agents they would like to start speaking with on Sunday and are busy planning for what they want to accomplish in next month's summer league in Las Vegas. So while players like LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade can continue reveling in a title, Miami's brain trust like team president Pat Riley and coach Erik Spoelstra are in back-to-work mode.

"Certainly, we were able to enjoy the weekend, like we haven't been able to for the whole season," Spoelstra said. "That's been tremendous. But we're in a different situation than the players, and our staff understands that right now. This is an important week and then everything leading up to this summer league and then all the way through this summer league will be important. ... We're not in a rush to celebrate right now."

Spoelstra said that when he arrived at work Monday, he saw a list of free agents who might be available, as well as the latest details on Miami's draft plans and salary cap situation going into the summer.

Right then, Spoelstra said, he "realized how far behind I am."

"I have a lot to catch up on in the coming days," Spoelstra said.

Such is the case when your team is the last one standing at the end of any season ? particularly so after the hectic sprint that was the 2011-12 NBA campaign, shortened to 66 games because of the lockout and compressed into a calendar that allowed almost no breathing room.

Draft first, then free agency, then summer league.

James will play in the London Olympics, Bosh said he's still expecting to play, but Wade's plans for the games may be on hold depending on what doctors tell him about his problematic left knee. Mike Miller ? one of the heroes of Game 5 of the finals against Oklahoma City ? was planning to see a neurosurgeon on Tuesday to address his balky back. James Jones is considering retirement. Ronny Turiaf has an option to return. No one knows what the roster will really look like, which makes the workload facing the Heat right now even more of a guessing game.

When Miami won its first title in 2006, the Heat returned the next season hardly ready for a title defense, losing by 42 points to Chicago on the night they got their championship rings.

Wade isn't worried about something like that happening again.

"Once you win a championship, you always feel like, 'We can do it again,'" Wade said. "I think guys came in (after the 2006 title) kind of going through the motions a little bit. ... This team will be fine. The core of our guys will be guys in the prime of their game, and I don't think we'll have a problem coming back motivated to try to compete for another title and defend the one that we have."

For Miami's Olympic-bound players, there will be precious little time off.

Training camp starts in Las Vegas early next month, and there will be hardly any down time through the end of the games in London in mid-August. If the Heat are selected to go overseas for part of the preseason ? a strong possibility ? that means they'll likely start training camp in late September. So the last team standing in one season might be one of the first to resume camp the following season.

"You have to be a strong person to get through that," Bosh said. "It's going to be tough, just like anything else. But we just have to keep going. As long as we don't look at everything as a whole and just kind of stay in what's happening now and not get too caught up in the future I think we'll be OK."

Some teams will have offseasons lasting about five months. Miami's will be about three, and with an Olympics thrown in for possibly all three of their best players.

"I'm going to try to get as much rest as I can," said James, the regular-season and finals MVP. "But I understand it's been a long season ? a short, compacted season ? plus the Olympics. So I'm going to train with the team, get as much work in. I'm already kind of in shape so I don't have to worry about getting in too much shape and then trying to recraft my skills. And after the Olympics I'm going to take some time off, just kind of try to get my legs back."

He's already aware how daunting the next 12 months could be for Miami, if the Heat make good on their plans for another title push.

"Hopefully it's another long season for us next year," James said. "I will be ready."

BeSecure NDP-VM

The BeSecure NDP-VM ($5,000) virtual appliance is a secure Web gateway from Wedge Networks. The company's BeSecure line offers network administrators basic firewall capabilities such as port routing for protocols, but the main focus of the appliance is to inspect network traffic, identify suspicious packets, and block malware and offending content from reaching the endpoint. Administrators worried about Web threats and malicious emails can look over the BeSecure product family and take advantage of flexible deployment options, easy-to-configure security features, and detailed logging capabilities without breaking the bank. The NDP-VM is available as a dedicated hardware appliance or as a virtual machine. While I reviewed the virtual appliance, the experience is supposed to be the same regardless of the type of appliance deployed, virtual or hardware.

Who's it for?
BeSecure can perform real-time analysis of thousands of Web sessions and email traffic to protect the network as well as control access to certain Web content based on keywords. While knowing what is happening on the network is important, small and midsized businesses tend to have less complex networks and may not always be willing to shell out for security.

The only difference across various appliances is the box's processing capability. BeSecure NDP-1005D, the entry-level hardware appliance can process 100,000 email messages and a million HTTP requests per hour for more than a hundred concurrent users. The NDP-1005D is priced at $5,080. The virtual appliance I looked at, BeSecure NDP-VM, would come out to about $5,000 for an SMB customer. Wedge Networks also offers a cloud service, the Wedge Stargate, which provides the same protection for only $20 to $50 per person per year.

Large organizations would pick an appliance that matches the number of users and expected traffic. Businesses that have dipped their toes into the virtualization pool would find the virtual appliance a breeze, especially since there's no extra hardware investment required. The BeSecure NDP-VM is generally suited for businesses with about 100 people to 2,000 users. Businesses with fewer user would be better suited to try the Wedge Stargate cloud service.

WedgeOS
WedgeOS is the deep content inspection platform developed by Wedge Networks and the heart of the technology powering the BeSecure appliance. When booting up the BeSecure appliance, I could see the base modules for Fedora 12 loading, and the WedgeOS console launched after I logged in to the system.

The custom WedgeOS software doesn't look at just the network packets when scanning traffic. The Deep Content Inspection technology identifies the context in order to identify whether the traffic is legitimate or truly malicious. The Web gateways are designed to recognize digital objects, documents, images, and scripts when analyzing Web, email and other types of network traffic. It can extract files from archives, binders, packers, and scramblers to inspect all the components for malware.

WedgeOS identifies packets that were part of a malicious payload and then reconstructs a copy of the payload for analysis. It also scans the payload using a traditional signature-based scanner, a heuristic scanner, and an anti-spam filter. When malware is found, the user is blocked from reaching the website and a customized warning message is displayed in the browser.

Deploying the Virtual Appliance
Since the software handles all the filtering and inspection, the experience is expected to be the same whether the appliance is hardware-based or virtual. I reviewed the BeSecure NDP-VM virtual appliance.

NDP-VM is available as a VMware image. It's possible to install the virtual machine on VMware's ESXi Server 4 using vSphere 4, but VMware Player and VMware Fusion is also supported. Player is a stripped down version of VMware's virtualization platform with limited management capabilities. The accompanying QuickStart Guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the appliance.

Deployment was just a matter of downloading the virtual machine from Wedge Networks. Customers would receive the package from either Wedge Networks or a certified reseller. After importing the appliance into the platform, I configured the appliance to use unique virtual networks for the appliance's network adapters. The virtual networks would make it possible for other virtual machines on the platform to connect to the BeSecure appliance using the Ingress port ?in transparent bridge mode. Ingress refers to a virtual port used for incoming traffic; Egress ports handle outgoing traffic.

The transparent bridge code also meant the appliance could see VLAN information and MAC and IP addresses associated with the network traffic.

I was surprised at how lightweight BeSecure was, as I could run the virtual machine in VMware Player on a small HP server. Wedge Networks recommended having 4 GB of memory for BeSecure, but it appeared to work just fine with just 2 GB on my test machine. I was able to run other virtual machines on Player and bridge them to BeSecure so long as I had sufficient physical memory on the server.

I also had the option to configure the appliance to see other machines on the network?not just virtual machines?in router mode. After setting up the appliance, I just made sure each endpoint was pointing to the appliance's IP address as the network gateway. In router mode, I could route physical and virtual machines on the same network to pass through BeSecure NDP-VM before reaching the Internet.

However, Microsoft's Hyper-V is not supported. Wedge Networks assured me that adding support for Microsoft's virtualization platform was on the roadmap. The team actually built a Hyper-V image for me to test with, but we ran into some issues tied to the way Hyper-V manages physical resources.

Tools for Plumbers in Sacramento CA

If you want to fix your plumbing system without professional help, you need to make sure that you are familiar with the tools that you need. There are people who are trying to fix their plumbing system without the help of a professional, but ended up with more problems, simply because they are not aware of the tools that they need. In this article, we will be discussing some of the things that you need to know about these properties and how you can properly use them for your plumbing system.

The plumber's tape is probably one of the most important things that you should have when trying to fix your plumbing system. There is even a saying that goes; "if a plumber's tape can't fix it, then nothing can". Although this is not absolutely true, there are times when this saying is applicable. For example, if you want to fix a broken pipe, the first thing that you need to do is to use the plumber's tape. Just have it wrapped around the pipe thread to tighten the connection of the pipes and bring it back together.

You also need to have a pipe wrench with you. This tool will help you remove the pipes from their alignment and will help you fix whatever damage it has. You don't have to spend a lot of money for it, since there are wrenches that only cost less than $20. The amount that you will be spending won't determine the effectiveness of the wrench. The fact that it can help you remove the pipe from the alignment is already a good reason for you to have this tool when trying to fix a broken pipe.

The cup plunger and flange plunger are also two of the most important plumbing tools that you should have. There are people who are trying to fix a broken pipe without this tool and ended up spending more time in fixing their bathroom fixtures. These plungers will serve as your tool to remove clog on the toilet, making it easier for you to clean or fix it. Most people think that these tools cost more money, but the truth is that you will only be spending less than $5 to have both of these tools with you. There are some that would cost about a hundred dollars, and buying them would depend on your preferential decision.

Are you still looking for a reliable Plumber in Sacramento? If so, then it would be better if you are going to check our website now. Our years of experience in this business will ensure that you will always get the best results from us. Aside from this, we can also help you find the best? Plumber Sacramento CA who can provide you with what you really need.

Torvalds Drops F-Bomb on Nvidia

It's not often the "F-word" figures prominently in any major debate here in the Recently, however, it was catapulted into a starring role when it was uttered by none other than Linus Torvalds himself during a talk at the Aalto Centre for Entrepreneurship in Finland earlier this month. The topic was Nvidia, to be precise -- specifically, its longstanding lackluster approach to Linux.

Egypt's Morsi: Bloodshed will not be in vain

Egypt has elected a conservative president who has said he wants to impose Islamic law. How he will change the country remains unclear. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By NBC News and msnbc.com news services

Updated at 4:05 p.m. ET: CAIRO -? Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood-backed candidate, was declared Egypt?s first Islamist president on Sunday with 51.7 percent of last weekend's run-off vote, defeating Ahmed Shafiq, who had been tapped as prime minister by former President Hosni Mubarak.

In an address to Egyptians late Sunday night, Morsi reiterated his platform of unifying all Egyptians. Of those who died while protesting more than a year ago, he said, "Their blood will not go in vain."

Morsi becomes Egypt?s fifth president, following Mubarak, who was president for nearly 30 years before mass protests across the country forced him to resign in February 2011.

The announcement by the state election committee Sunday touched off a jubilant celebration in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where tens of thousands of Brotherhood supporters had gathered in 97-degree heat. The crowd waved national flags and chanted "Allahu Akbar!" or "God is great!"

Morsi?will be sworn in on July 1, according to the election timetable.

His victory followed?speculation about backroom deals and suspected interference by the ruling military council in determining the outcome in favor of Shafiq, Mubarak?s prime minister.

In his speech Sunday night, Morsi said that contrary to popular belief, he was grateful to the police, whom he called his "brothers and children." He said he would rely on them to maintain "security from the inside."

Supporters of Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate, protest against Egypt's military rulers in Tahrir Square on Saturday.

Morsi, who received an engineering degree from the University of Southern California in the early 1980s according to media reports, was a last-minute candidate, chosen to represent the Brotherhood after their preferred choice was disqualified.

On the campaign trail, he promised to institute Islamic law. One of his supporters, cleric Safwat el-Hegazy, issued a direct challenge to Israel, calling for a Muslim super-state across the Middle East with Jerusalem as its capital.

Morsi, 60, distanced himself from the cleric?s comments, but they trailed him on the campaign despite his assertion that he will respect international treaties, including the 1979 peace accord, on which much U.S. aid depends. He said he will not, however, meet with Israeli officials, according to the BBC.

He has also pledged to form an inclusive government to appeal to the many Egyptians, including a large Christian minority worried about potential religious rule. He has repeated that he would maintain his independence from the Brotherhood and not turn Egypt into a theocracy.

Morsi won the first round ballot in May with less than a quarter of the vote.

NBC Foreign Correspondent Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Tahrir Square.

There were some isolated scuffles in parts of Cairo between rival groups on Sunday. Several hundred Shafiq supporters in the middle-class suburb of Nasr City chanted "Save Egypt! The Brotherhood will destroy it!'' while soldiers tried to keep traffic moving.

The military council will retain control of the biggest army in the Middle East, whose closest ally is the United States.?

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who heads the military council that has ruled Egypt for more than 16 months, congratulated the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate after his presidential election win was confirmed, state television reported.?The report, made in a brief headline, did not give further details.

Morsi "will likely face foot-dragging and perhaps outright attempts to undermine his initiatives from key institutions," Elijah Zarwan, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said in Cairo. "Faced with such resistance, frustration may tempt him fall into the trap of attempting to throw his new weight around. This would be a mistake. His challenge is to lead a bitterly divided, fearful, and angry population toward a peaceful democratic outcome, without becoming a reviled scapegoat for continued military rule."

Egyptians fill Cairo's Tahrir Square in anticipation of a new government being announced. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Egypt's ruling armed forces were on alert on Sunday as fears of violence mounted in the final hours before the state election committee named the winner.

Sunday's result -- 500 days after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak -- is historic for the Middle East, but will not end power struggles between the army, Islamists and others over Egypt's future.

The generals, who oversaw Mubarak's departure, have repeatedly said, both to Egyptians and to their close U.S. ally, that they will return to barracks and hand over to civilian rule. But they present themselves as guardians of Egypt's security and long-term interests and moved to block the Islamists from taking more than a share of power.

The military has held power in Egypt for nearly 60 years since the revolution to overthrow a dynasty.

Iran's Foreign Ministry congratulated Egyptians on Sunday for Morsi's victory, saying Egypt was in the final stages of an "Islamic Awakening."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s office released a statement saying he "appreciates the democratic process in Egypt and respects its outcome."

"Israel expects continue cooperation with the Egyptian administration on the basis of the peace accord between the two countries, which is in the interest of the two peoples and contributes to regional stability,'' the statement said.

NBC's Andrea Mitchell examines the obstacles ahead for President-elect Mohammed Morsi of Egypt.

The son of a peasant farmer, Morsi has spoken of a simple childhood in a village in the Nile Delta province of Sharqia, recalling how his mother taught him prayer and the Koran. He obtained his doctorate from the University of Southern California in 1982 after studying at Cairo University.?

Following his studies in the United States, he returned to Egypt in 1985. Two of his five children hold U.S. citizenship.?

Charlene Gubash, NBC News producer in Cairo, msnbc.com's Isolde Raftery, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Mild thyroid dysfunction in early pregnancy linked to serious complications

ScienceDaily (June 23, 2012) ? Even moderate thyroid dysfunction during early pregnancy significantly increases the risk of serious complications, underscoring the need for universal screening in the first trimester, a new study finds. The results will be presented June 23 at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

"These findings add to the now increasing evidence from previous studies that all pregnant women, irrespective of their risk for thyroid problems, probably should be screened for thyroid dysfunction within the first three months of getting pregnant," said study lead author Jubbin Jagan Jacob, M.D., associate professor at Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana in Punjab, India.

Thyroid hormone is produced by the thyroid gland, which is located in the neck, and helps regulate the process of turning food into energy. Excessively low hormone production, or hypothyroidism, may cause symptoms like fatigue, sensitivity to cold temperatures, constipation, and depression.

During pregnancy untreated, hypothyroidism is associated with an increased risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, low birth weight, and other serious complications. Although previous research has suggested that women with moderate thyroid dysfunction, or subclinical hypothyroidism, also are more likely to suffer complications, the level of risk was uncertain.

In this study, investigators found that even mild thyroid dysfunction that did not meet the criteria for hypothyroidism greatly increased the risk of serious problems. Compared to pregnant women with normal thyroid function, the risk was:

? doubled for miscarriage (?20 weeks of pregnancy), premature labor, and low birth weight ? seven times greater for still birth

Screening for hypothyroidism involves taking a thorough history of symptoms, as well as a simple blood test to measure levels of another hormone, called thyroid-stimulating-hormone, or TSH, that promotes thyroid-hormone production. At this time, only pregnant women with clinical symptoms of hypothyroidism are routinely tested. Once diagnosed, the condition can be effectively controlled with medication that replaces natural thyroid hormone with a synthetic version. Investigators recruited 1,000 pregnant women in their first trimester of pregnancy for the study, as part of a larger project of routine thyroid screening during early pregnancy. They then measured the level of thyroid functioning using the TSA test.

Normal thyroid function was identified in 533 patients, and 263 had mild dysfunction. The remaining patients were diagnosed with hypothyroidism and withdrawn from the study for treatment. Follow-up continued until the completion of pregnancy.

Jacob and his team then compared rates of miscarriage, stillbirth, premature labor, and low birth weight. They also analyzed several other complications, as well, but these did not differ significantly between women with normal versus moderately low thyroid functioning.

"Our conclusions are that all pregnant women need to be screened for thyroid dysfunction at their first visit," Jacob said. "This should form the basis for the national societies to make a change in their guidelines."

Christian Medical College and Hospital funded the study.

Commercial Real Estate Agents ? Marketing Strategies for Your ...

Each year in commercial real estate, it is necessary to establish a marketing budget for the agency office. Proactive marketing of the agency office then assists the individual salespeople in their cold calling and prospecting activities.

When the marketing activities of the salespeople are matched to the marketing activities of the office, the branding reaches your target customer. In commercial real estate, the typical target customer or client will be one or more of the following:

Property investors of existing property

Property Investors wishing to acquire in the local area

Business owners in the local region

Solicitors and accountants that have property related clients

Tenants located in commercial buildings

Tenants located in retail shopping centres

Tenants located in industrial buildings and Parks

Property developers

In recent years, the marketing process in commercial property has changed substantially with the addition of electronic and Internet related marketing. The marketing package for a commercial agency remains a critical component of the yearly business plan.

To reach your target market the following components of the marketing plan should be considered:

Direct mail letter marketing to the people in the above list should be ongoing. The best value and conversion rate in this process is achieved through following up the letter with a direct call.

Unaddressed mail flyers drops through the local post office should occur three or four times a year.

Press advertising where appropriate and affordable is useful on the days where real estate features in the local media.

Success letters should be dispatched through the local area when property sales or leasing?s have been achieved.

Just listed letters should be dispatched through the local area when new properties are listed for sale or for lease.

Radio advertising is useful in regional towns where it is more affordable and can reach the target market.

Television advertising is only useful where it is affordable and it can reach the local target market. This is usually in the case of a regional town.

Telemarketing and cold calling should always be part of the marketing package for a real estate office. Caution needs to be exercised with regards to the do not call register that could apply in your location and the local legislation that relates to cold calling processes.

Community related marketing with signboards on sports venues is always useful where affordable.

Sponsorship of community groups and clubs is also wise strategy if the members of that group are aligned to the real estate product that you sell or lease.

Developing a simple group of promotional products to hand out to customers and the people you meet each day

Signboards are the most important marketing tool in the agency business. The more signboards you have in your territory, the stronger the branding for your real estate office.

The use of the Internet today requires careful selection of domain name, website identity, listing of properties on the Internet, search engine optimisation of your website, database, and Email integration.

Social Media Marketing tools that are becoming a big component of real estate communication. Whilst this can be done individually with each and every salesperson, it should also be done for the real estate office with its own business brand. Given that the marketing process here is quite specialised, it pays to involve experts in the process until it is well established and functional.

The process of marketing in commercial property is critical to the performance of the office. It complements the activities of the salespeople. In this way you can build market share consistently each and every year.

Showing glimpses of the talent that made his father a three-time Formula One champion gave Nelson Piquet Jr. the chance to race all over the world on some of the biggest stages in the sport. Now he wants to make it in NASCAR.

And he's hoping Saturday's Nationwide Series victory at Road America will help him catch the eye of a team owner willing to give his stock car racing career a boost.

''I think the best thing that could come out of this was to show team owners and bosses that I'm capable of doing it, if I just get the right car and the right team,'' Piquet said.

The win makes Piquet the first Brazilian to win a race in NASCAR's national touring series.

Michael McDowell was second, followed by Ron Fellows, Max Papis and Sam Hornish Jr.

Things didn't work out so well for Danica Patrick after she ran with the leaders almost all afternoon.

Jacques Villeneuve collided with Patrick on the last lap as the two drivers were battling for a top-five finish, causing Patrick's car to spin out. Villeneuve finished sixth, while Patrick recovered and finished 12th.

''Where Villeneuve goes, there tends to be cars that have problems, whether it's his fault or the other car's fault or (just) stock car racing at the end of the race,'' Patrick said. ''You all can make a decision for yourself, what you think happened there.''

Villeneuve, the 1995 Indianapolis 500 winner and 1997 Formula One champion, dominated the middle stages of the race but spun out on lap 33 and lost several positions. He had words with a member of Patrick's crew on pit road after the race.

''We were racing hard, and I wasn't even fighting with Danica, I was fighting with Max Papis,'' Villeneuve said in a radio interview. ''And just before the braking (zone), I guess he was wanting to cross over and go to the inside of Danica. And he probably didn't know I was there so he pushed me into the grass, and you don't slow down that much in the grass. So by the time I was on the racetrack again, I was going a little bit slower than Danica. That's all.''

Patrick ran well all day and even momentarily led the race when she passed Miguel Paludo on lap 21, only to give it back a few seconds later when she slightly overshot a turn and got passed. Patrick also shot up to second place on a late restart but couldn't hold the spot, fading slightly before getting involved in the incident with Villeneuve.

''It just would have been good to get a good result,'' Patrick said. ''People sort of say I don't get good results, but today I ran well. I feel like lately we've been running much better but we haven't sort of finished the deal and gotten the result.''

Meanwhile, Piquet's extensive road racing experience paid off at the four-mile, 14-turn road course that winds through the hills of central Wisconsin.

But as much as he enjoyed winning, he knows he still has to prove he can consistently run well on oval tracks - something he's trying to do in the Trucks Series, where he is sixth in the points standings.

''I'm going to be here for a long time, hopefully,'' Piquet said.

And while NASCAR might not be a big deal back in Brazil, Piquet's success already was having a measurable effect. After he won pole position for the race during Saturday morning's qualifying, Piquet said fans in Brazil used social media to pressure a Brazilian television network to take a soccer game off the air and show the NASCAR race live.

''Hopefully, in a few years, I'll be opening a path for all those Brazilian fans who mostly go to Europe, they can come to America too,'' Piquet said.

And Piquet got a phone call from his famous father right after the race.

''He was laughing,'' Piquet said. ''I don't know if he had a beer or not. But he was very, very excited.''

McDowell said he couldn't chase down Piquet at the end.

''His car was fast,'' McDowell said. ''I don't know if we would have had anything for him if we could have just stayed with him on that restart.''

The second-place finish was another good run at Road America for McDowell, who lost the lead in the late stages of last year's race.

''I can tell you this: If I get to do this five more times, I'm going to win one of these things,'' McDowell said.
