New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has been selected to deliver the keynote address at the Republican National Convention later this month.
Party leaders will officially announce the decision later Tuesday.
Christie told USA TODAY in an interview posted on the newspaper's website early Tuesday morning that his speech will focus more on making the case for electing Mitt Romney than on bashing President Obama.
He said he's been "grinding away" on the speech in the past few days since Romney contacted him about the highly coveted convention role.
In a statement obtained by New Jersey's Star Ledger newspaper, Christie said, "It is an honor to be able to address our party and our nation in just a few short weeks. The challenges we face as a country are great and require the honesty and boldness of the Romney-Ryan team. We have an opportunity in Tampa to make clear that if we tell each other the hard truths, tackle the big problems, and make bold choices, we will see America's comeback."
Christie was encouraged by some to consider making a presidential run of his own.? He declined and instead became one of Romney's earliest big-name supporters.
