Professor publishes book chapter and conference paper ? News ...

Dr. Catherine Jolivette, associate professor of art and design, recently published two pieces about art in Cold War Britain. ?Displays of Power: Telling the Story of British Nuclear Physics at the 1951 Festival of Britain? was accepted by the International Congress of History and Science, Technology and Medicine, and her book chapter, ?Science, Art and Landscape in the Nuclear Age,? was included in ?British Art in the Cultural Field, 1939-69.?

In her international conference paper, Jolivette discusses how artists and designers at the Festival of Britain influenced the public?s perception about scientific discoveries and?how the concept of ?the atom? had an impact on both the artistic output and popular imagination of the era.

?Taking the case study of one national exhibition, this paper focuses on how visual imagery communicates both the positive and negative aspects of nuclear power in all of its varied forms,? said Jolivette. She will present her paper at the International Conference of History and Science in Manchester in July.

For her book chapter, Jolivette sought to illustrate how a climate of nuclear anxiety affected British artists? representations of their country and environment.

?What I discovered when writing my first book (?Landscape, Art and Identity in 1950s Britain? Ashgate, 2009) was that almost nothing had been written about how the Cold War affected how Britons in the 1950s and 1960s saw their homeland as under threat from nuclear attack, even though magazines, radio programs, films etc., discussed such fears extensively,? said Jolivette. ?I was curious to explore how visual artists pictured the national terrain during a time of tense political negotiations, the establishment of the world?s first nuclear power stations and the secret development of the hydrogen bomb.?

Her current book project, forthcoming with Ashgate Publishing Company, is?titled??British Art in the Nuclear Age.?

For more information, contact Jolivette at (417) 836-5152.

Rainbow Academy Strives to Meet Needs of Growing Number of ...

Results from Recent Survey Conducted by a New Jersey-Based Early Learning & Childcare Company Indicates What Working Parents Value Most to Help Balance Their Work and Life

November 29, 2012 // Franchising.com // Piscataway ? Rainbow Academy? - A Family of Early Learning Centers that serves nearly 1800 children through thirteen centers across New Jersey in Bergen, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Morris, Monmouth and Union counties ? recently conducted a survey of the parents of children enrolled in its centers. Founded on the concept of providing a ?Circle of Care? approach to the families it serves ? where the needs of working parents are an equally important component as the care and education of their children ? Rainbow Academy developed the survey in order to make certain they indeed understand the prevailing needs in order to better meet parents? expectations. The information that was gleaned from a survey analysis performed by Cybeck Capital Partners provided a microcosm of what are likely the concerns, desires and circumstances of many parents across the nation today.

Perhaps most telling about families hard hit by the current state of the economy and job market is the fact that 2 out of 10 parents who responded to the survey indicated that they have needed to adjust to changes in the workplace ranging from 36% who had faced layoffs and 22% who had either an increase or decrease in their work hours. Among parents surveyed, 86.2% were dual-income ? and 7 out of 10 of those families included moms and dads who both worked full-time jobs, clearly signifying the rising need for quality childcare services. When seeking childcare for their children, respondents denoted that quality of programming, experience and communication skills of the staff, and convenience of hours to accommodate their long working schedules were all key factors in the selection process. As for features that drew parents specifically to Rainbow Academy, cleanliness of the facility, quality of classroom staff, educational programs, safety and security of the center, and convenience to home or work all received high marks from respondents. Also garnering credit for attracting parents to its centers was Rainbow Academy?s ParentView? Monitoring.

?Our ParentView technology is an innovative internet monitoring service that allows parents to log in securely from any computer anywhere in the world and watch their child at any given time during the day,? explained company founder and CEO, Guy Falzarano. ?With two ParentView cameras in every classroom, it presents a unique opportunity for parents ? and even grandparents ? to stay connected, like they are a part of their child?s day at Rainbow Academy. It helps relieve some of the stress that working parents face being away from their children. Mom or Dad can check on their little one right from their desk, tablet or smartphone, and it makes a big difference. With full access throughout the day, ParentView really redefines the ?open door policy? for our parents. We are confident in the performance of our staff members, cleanliness of our facilities, and quality of our programs, so we welcome the opportunity for parents to observe. Most importantly, ParentView Monitoring provides parents with something we all desire ? much-needed peace of mind.?

Peace-of-mind is also a valuable asset when considering the viability of a childcare center ? a segment equally hard hit by the beleaguered economy. Parents spend a great deal of time researching childcare facilities, and need to believe that the center of their choosing will be there to fulfill their childcare needs for the long haul. According to a recent report by United Way of Northern New Jersey*, more than 50 daycare centers were closed in New Jersey during the first four months of 2011 alone. During this same time, Rainbow Academy launched the franchise division of its company and began construction of three new facilities in Fairlawn, Westwood, and North Brunswick with twelve more franchises planned for 2013 and 2014 in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

?All Rainbow Academy franchisees are carefully chosen for their commitment to our core values and practices that have put us on the map in New Jersey for the 15 years since our founding,? insisted Falzarano. ?Company-wide, we continue to invest in staff training and development, customer service initiatives, and new technology that improve parent communication and advance our early learning programs. To remain financially fit, it is imperative that we evolve in order to meet the needs of parents and children. It is the reason that Rainbow Academy has not only survived in a down economy, but has thrived! Surveys like the one we just completed enable us to ensure that we are the best fit for the needs of busy working parents.?

About Rainbow Academy?

Established in 1997 by Gaetano and Julia Falzarano, Rainbow Academy ? A Family of Early Learning Centers has grown steadily, right along with the children it nurtures, from one center to thirteen locations by the end of 2012. With locations throughout New Jersey ? including Cranford, Fair Lawn, Flemington, Iselin, Mahwah, Manasquan, North Brunswick, Piscataway, Rutherford, Westwood, Whippany and Woodbridge ? Rainbow Academy has never outgrown its unique approach to childcare and early education offered to over 1800 children and their families. The company is dedicated to providing the very best in early education to both the children and the parents it serves through a careful balance of care and education offered by well-trained educators and caregivers.

Rainbow Academy is redefining early childhood education and putting the ?care? back in childcare with its signature ?Circle of Care? philosophy encompassing children, parents, educators, vendors and franchisees. With ParentView? Internet Monitoring, and the exciting introduction of Interactive Whiteboards to ally of their centers, Rainbow Academy has integrated cutting edge technology into this higher level of service. The Falzarano family remains deeply involved in the company ? from Guy Falzarano at the helm as CEO to their youngest grandchild enrolled at one of the facilities. Rainbow Academy franchised their business in 2011 in an effort to expand their distinctive early education concept throughout the Northeast. Rainbow Academy provides early education and childcare to children ages 6 weeks through Kindergarten, as well as special programming for children up to 10 years old during school holidays and breaks ? including Rainbow Academy Summer Camp.

Jamie Dupree's Washington Insider: Republicans taps new House panel chairs

House Republicans on Tuesday announced their lineup of committee chairs for the 113th Congress, which begins in January, as a number of major changes took place thanks to GOP rules that limit service in the party's top slot on committees to six years.

Only one person was given an exemption for the next Congress, that was Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), who got a waiver from House Speaker John Boehner to again lead the Budget Committee.

    Here is the list:

Agriculture ? Rep. Frank Lucas (R-OK)
Appropriations ? Rep. Hal Rogers (R-KY)
Armed Services ? Rep. Howard ?Buck? McKeon (R-CA)
Budget ? Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI)
Education and the Workforce ? Rep. John Kline (R-MN)
Energy and Commerce ? Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI)
Financial Services ? Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX)
Foreign Affairs ? Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA)
Homeland Security ? Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX)
Intelligence ? Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI)
Judiciary ? Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA)
Natural Resources ? Rep. Doc Hastings (R-WA)
Oversight and Government Reform ? Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA)
Rules ? Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX)
Science, Space, and Technology ? Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX)
Small Business ? Rep. Sam Graves (R-MO)
Transportation and Infrastructure ? Rep. Bill Shuster (R-PA)
Veterans? Affairs ? Rep. Jeff Miller (R-FL)
Ways and Means ? Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI)

While the Drudge Report and others accurately noted that the lineup consists entirely of white men, that was only a minor change from the current Congress, as the one woman heading a committee, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida cycled out because of committee term limits.

The biggest loser in this shakeup was the Sunshine State, as Florida lost the chairs of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee (Rep. John Mica) and Ros-Lehtinen on Foreign Affairs; Rep. Jeff Miller is the only major chair left from Florida, as he still heads the Veterans Affairs panel.

The big winner was the state of Texas, which ended up adding two gavels, but in a roundabout fashion.

Rep. Lamar Smith switches from chair of the Judiciary Committee to the Science panel, taking over for Rep. Ralph Hall of Texas; Lone Star State Rep. Mike McCaul will be the new head of Homeland Security and Rep. Jeb Hensarling takes over the Financial Services Committee.

Also, Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas will be the chairman of the powerful House Rules Committee, giving Texas four powerful committee slots as that delegation adds four seats in the new Congress after redistricting.

California will still have two gavels, as Rep. Darrell Issa stays on as head of the Oversight panel; while Rep. David Dreier leaves as Rules chairman, Rep. Ed Royce of the Golden State will be the new chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Maybe the most interesting name on the list is the new Transportation panel chairman, Rep. Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania; his father, Rep. Bud Shuster also chaired the same committee, but was the target of an ethics probe, and ultimately resigned after being elected to a 14th term in office.

Maybe the most infamous moment for Shuster the Father came when a "60 Minutes" crew filmed him hiding under a blanket in the back seat of a car driven by his former Chief of Staff.

We'll see if Shuster the Son is remembered differently after his time at the helm of the Transportation panel.

Van Gogh, John Lennon letters coming to NY auction

NEW YORK (AP) ? An upcoming auction of over 300 historical documents includes rare letters written by Vincent van Gogh, George Washington, John Lennon and other iconic figures.

The property of an anonymous American collector is being offered by Profiles in History in an online and phone auction on Dec. 18.

Among the highlights is a two-page letter from Washington to an Anglican clergyman.

Another top item is a signed van Gogh letter, written in 1890, to Joseph and Marie Ginoux, who were proprietors of the Cafe de la Gare in Arles, France, where the Dutch post-impressionist artist lived for a time.

Each of those letters is estimated to bring $200,000 to $300,000.

A handwritten letter from John Lennon to Eric Clapton has a pre-sale estimate of $20,000 to $30,000.

The collection will be exhibited Dec. 3-9 at Douglas Elliman's Madison Avenue art gallery.

Washington's letter was written on Aug. 15, 1798, to the Rev. Jonathan Boucher, amid an undeclared naval war with France. Washington thanks Boucher for sending him his "View of the Causes and Consequences of the American Revolution," a book of 13 discourses Boucher preached.

"Peace, with all the world is my sincere wish, I am sure it is our true policy ? and am persuaded it is the ardent desire of the Government," the former president and Founding Father wrote.

In a Jan. 20, 1890, four-page letter, handwritten in French to his friends Monsieur and Madame Ginoux, van Gogh wishes the ailing proprietress a speedy recovery.

"Illnesses are there to make us remember again that we are not made of wood," the artist wrote. "That's what seems the good side of all this to me. Then afterwards one goes back to one's everyday work less fearful of the annoyances, with a new store of serenity." Van Gogh died less than seven months later.

He suffered from acute anxiety and bouts of depression throughout his life. Madame Ginoux and the cafe were frequent subjects of his work.

The eight-page letter from Lennon is a draft he wrote to Clapton on Sept. 29, 1971, and signed "John and Yoko." The whereabouts of the final version is unknown.

Lennon writes candidly about his admiration for the great British guitarist and suggests forming a "'nucleus' group (Plastic Ono Band) . ? and of course had YOU!!! In mind as soon as we decided." He writes that drummer Jim Kelnter, artist Klaus Voormann, pianist Nicky Hopkins and producer Phil Spector "all agreed so far" to join.

"Anyway, the point is, after missing the Bangla-Desh concert, we began to feel more and more like going on the road, but not the way I used with the Beatles ? night after night of torture. We mean to enjoy ourselves, take it easy, and maybe even see some of the places we go to! We have many 'revolutionary' ideas for presenting shows that completely involve the audience ."

Other luminaries whose papers will be sold include Lou Gehrig, Louis Pasteur, Sigmund Freud, Charles Darwin, Marie Curie, Giuseppe Verdi, Peter Tchaikovsky, Cole Porter, King Henry II and Napoleon I.

The December auction is the first of several sales that will be held over two years. The entire collection contains 3,000 items.

US federal mediators to join NHL labor talks

NHL Players' Association executive director Donald Fehr arrives for labor talks at NHL headquarters in New York, Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, in New York. (AP Photo/ Louis Lanzano)

(AP) ? Federal mediators are entering the stalled NHL labor talks, with the season's first 2? months already lost because of the lockout.

George Cohen, director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, said Monday the parties had agreed to use the agency. He assigned three mediators to assist negotiations ? deputy director Scot Beckenbaugh, director of mediation services John Sweeney and Commissioner Guy Serota ? who was removed later in the day because of a Twitter account that may have been tampered with.

The sides are to meet separately with the mediators Wednesday.

"While we have no particular level of expectation going into this process, we welcome a new approach in trying to reach a resolution of the ongoing labor dispute at the earliest possible date," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said.

Cohen has worked with the players' associations for Major League Baseball, helping end the 1994-95 strike as an outside counsel, and the NBA. He was an adviser to the NHL players' union before joining FMCS three years ago.

"We look forward to their involvement as we continue working to reach an equitable agreement for both the players and the owners," said Donald Fehr, executive director of the NHL Players' Association.

Cohen mediated during the 2010 negotiations in Major League Soccer and 2011 talks in the NFL and NBA, along with this year's dispute between the NFL and its on-field officials.

Cohen said Serota was removed because "within one hour after I issued a press release ... it has been called to my attention that there are issues involving an allegedly hacked Twitter account associated with Commissioner Guy Serota." He said Serota was removed "to immediately dispel any cloud on the mediation process, and without regard to the merits of the allegations."

Hockey players and management have not negotiated since last Wednesday. The NHL has canceled more than one-third of its regular season, including all games through Dec. 14, the New Year's Day outdoor Winter Classic and the All-Star weekend scheduled for Jan. 26-27 at Columbus, Ohio.

"I have had separate, informal discussions with the key representatives of the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association during the course of their negotiations for a successor collective bargaining agreement," Cohen said in a statement.

"Due to the extreme sensitivity of these negotiations and consistent with the FMCS's longstanding practice, the agency will refrain from any public comment concerning the future schedule and/or the status of the negotiations until further notice."

Beckenbaugh was a mediator during the 2004-05 lockout, a stoppage that caused cancellation of the entire season.

Thorium To Be Tested in a Working Nuclear Reactor

A Norwegian company led by Alf Bj?rseth will start burning thorium fuel in a conventional test reactor owned by Norway?s government with help from U.S.-based nuclear giant Westinghouse.

Bj?rseth is now running his private company Scatec AS, and establishing new companies within Scatec based on the latest technologies in the areas of renewable energy and advanced materials, including a thorium fuel effort through a holding company called Thor Corporation.

Thor Corporation owns Thor Energy and also has shares in businesses related to thorium fuel, thorium mining and separation of rare earth elements.? Fen Minerals holds the mining rights to the Fen deposits in South Norway, which are rich in thorium and rare earth elements. The third company is Norwegian Separation Technology, a company in the process of developing a novel separation method for rare earth elements.

The company has completed a 2-year thorium fuel cycle feasibility study which concludes that thorium-based nuclear fuel has several advantages over uranium-based fuel, including better waste characteristics, improved proliferation resistance, and abundant raw material supply.

Thor Energy has established a consortium that will fund and run a 5-year thorium irradiation project to be conducted at the Norwegian government owned Halden Nuclear Reactor.? Halden, typically described as a ?test reactor,? also provides steam to a nearby paper mill. The move should bring thorium closer to replacing uranium as a possible safer and more effective nuclear power source.

Thor?s chief technology officer Julian Kelly explained Thor Energy will deploy a mix of solid thorium mixed with plutonium ? a blend known as ?thorium MOX?.

The plan isn?t the one most thorium enthusiasts have been hoping for.? Many professionals believe thorium?s advantages are most pronounced in alternative reactor designs such as molten salt reactors and pebble bed reactors, rather than today?s conventional solid-fuel water-cooled reactors.

Some thorium fans have realized it may be best to insert thorium into the energy scene by first putting it to use in reactors that already have regulatory approval.

Halden Heavy Water Reactor Flow Diagram.
Halden Heavy Water Reactor Flow Diagram.

Best or not, Thor is testing the thorium fuel in a conventional reactor at Halden cooled by ?heavy water?.? This is not the same as regular light water reactors built commercially around the world.? The cooling is by deuterium or water with an isotope of hydrogen.

Related Article: What Happens IF Cold Fusion Does Become Reality?

With plutonium seed in the fuel mix, the reactors would not only generate power, but they would also eliminate dangerous waste left over from other nuclear operations and thus help address the problem of what to do with that waste.

The consortium reaches pretty far.? Thor will fabricate some of its own thorium MOX in partnership with Norway?s Institute for Energy Technology. Britain?s National Nuclear Laboratory ? owned by the UK?s Department of Energy and Climate Change ? will also provide some, as will the European Commission?s Institute for Transuranium Elements.

Westinghouse is helping to fund the project, as are other of Thor?s industrial partners including Steenkampskraal Thorium Ltd., a South African company that is developing a thorium-fueled pebble bed reactor.? Other partners include the Finnish utility Fortum and the French chemicals company Rhodia.

That news ought to cheer all the thorium enthusiasts.

Yet Westinghouse doesn?t like to discuss its thorium activities publicly.? It is likely the firm believes working alternatives could undermine the company?s conventional nuclear business. Rumors have it Westinghouse has at least a few thorium-connected and alternative nuclear projects in the works.? One is out now and it isn?t a direct competitor as such.

Westinghouse is also known to be the commercial adviser on the U.S. Department of Energy?s collaboration with China on developing a molten-salt cooled reactor.? Westinghouse has also helped organize many of the alternative nuclear sessions at the American Nuclear Society convention just held in San Diego California.

This is great news worthy of Norway and her citizens.? The element thorium was named by the region?s ancestral God Thor, they have rich deposits, and a great deal of competency and intellectual prowess.? The test will very likely work out and that could offer reactor operators an alternative to uranium and ever more plutonium.

It will be fascinating to see the results.? The wait will be long though; it takes quite a while to burn through nuclear fuel.

007 developer cut, blames console gamers | Lazygamer .:: The ...

    My-head-is-huge-and-my-gun-is-tiny!

The latest game to feature the secret agent who?s been in his late thirties since the 1920?s, James Bond, was not at all well received; mostly because it was a rushed, buggy mess of incoherence. It?s developers will unfortunately not be able to make amends for it ? because it?s been forced to lay off the majority of its staff.

?We?ve fought to try and save as many jobs as possible, but the steep decline in demand for console games, culminating in a number of console projects falling through in the last week, left us with no option,? developer Eurocom said in a statement. ?Eurocom has retained a core staff of just under 50 employees and will be focusing mainly on mobile opportunities moving forward.?

Sorry, what? I think you?re mistaken, not stirred. A steep decline in demand for console games? No, I think what there is is a steep decline in the demand for terrible games. It?s terribly sad for Eurocom and all those who?ll be losing their jobs ? but 007 Legends is just an awful insult of a game.

It?s unfortunate, because Eurocom is capable of much more, having developed the pretty excellent on-rails Dead Space: Extraction for the Wii,later ported to the PS3 and included free with that console?s version of Dead Space 2.

007 Legends currently sits with a 45% Metacritic average and poor sales, forcing the developer to create redundancies ? though none of them are nearly as redundant as 007 Legends itself.

Why 2D Printing Is Like 3D Printing: A Counter Rant

JohnHauerEditor's note: John Hauer is a sales, marketing and technology innovator with a 20+ career of working in print and related industries. He manages a blog which evangelizes 3D printing for traditional 2D printers, and can be found at 3D4printers.com. I recently read an article on TechCrunch by Jon Evans entitled 3D Printers Are Not Like 2D Printers. While I would agree with the title (obviously the two devices don?t serve the same purpose), I don?t agree with the argument Jon makes for why 3D printing is not like 2D printing.

Black Friday: Stay Home and be Thankful | Parenting Without A ...

Black Friday: Stay Home and be Thankful
Crystal is thankful for the return of laughter!

I confess I fear Black Friday. As a child, I feared Black Friday the way others feared the dark, strangers and death.?Black Friday sounded?ominous?and lurking, something to feed my overly active childish imagination and nightmares. Black Friday -- a day where the sun never rises and darkness?suffocates?the unicorns. My family stayed in pajamas all day safely ensconced in our house, while we watched the television news coverage filled with images of crazed adult shoppers shoving and pushing each other over trivial things.

While my fear has dwindled (a little), I still refuse to leave the house on Black Friday. In fact, I prefer to stay tucked away inside my house until Cyber Monday. This year, I am staying home with my family, turning off the television and focusing on my many blessings. Please take a minute or several to reflect on your many blessings in the midst of the Black Friday chaos.

I am most thankful for the return of laughter and humor into my life. Before my child was diagnosed with a chronic illness and our lives were forever changed, laughter was something I took for granted. It was background noise in an already noisy house stuffed with pets, children and ensuing chaos. And then, my child got sick. Laughter was a luxury we didn't have time for in the midst of overwhelming fear and crisis management. It disappeared as if it had never been there at all.

But slowly as a flower unfurls and blooms in the springtime, laughter reappeared. I was hesitant to embrace it. I was afraid. I was worried that I was somehow being disrespectful to my child and her illness. Yet, my child was the one who embraced the laughter, the silliness. And so, laughter poured into our home again. It knocked down the walls, chased away most of the shadows, eased my weary soul.

I am thankful for laughter. May it always be the soundtrack of my home and yours!

    Yours,

    Crystal Intini Alperin

All of the bloggers at Parenting Without A Parachute wish you many blessings, health, love, laughter and peace today and always!

Here are what some of the other lovely bloggers at Parenting Without A Parachute are thankful for this holiday season:

    Shari -

There are so many things that I am thankful for this holiday season. Everyday I count my blessings, as my life is good, happy, and drama free. My list is quite long so here are the top things that I am thankful for:

? Food on the table and a cozy, warm house.
? Friends and family that love, respect, and accept me for who I am.
? My husband who is wonderful everyday and doesn?t even know it.
? My son who is perfect and makes me laugh and my heart swell.

    Elizabeth -

Sitting down at our Thanksgiving table, I have an overwhelming appreciation for those around me. As I take in the sight of the food and drink, a feast before our eyes, I realize many more people helped us prepare this meal. The farmers who grew the sweet potatoes, pumpkins and green beans. The vineyard owner who nurtured the grape which made the wine we are drinking. The silverware itself has seen over 50 turkeys! I encourage you to take in each savory bite today and heartily contribute to the conversation of the table. Blessings upon you and your family.

    Jess? -

To say I am ?thankful? for what has happened over the past year seems like it would be a dramatic understatement, but for lack of a better word, I?ll use it.

I am thankful to have this adorable, growing baby bump, to have a home which I may or may not have the energy to vacuum, to have a husband who is always willing to step in and help when I am lacking the energy and most of all to have a support system of family friends standing tall for us every step of the way.

(AP) ? Thousands of opponents of Egypt's Islamist president clashed with his supporters in cities across the country Friday, burning several offices of the Muslim Brotherhood, in the most violent and widespread protests since Mohammed Morsi came to power, sparked by his move to grant himself sweeping powers.

The violence, which left 100 people injured, reflected the increasingly dangerous polarization in Egypt over what course it will take nearly two years after the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Critics of Morsi accused him of seizing dictatorial powers with his decrees a day earlier that make him immune to judicial oversight and give him authority to take any steps against "threats to the revolution". On Friday, the president spoke before a crowd of his supporters massed in front of his palace and said his edits were necessary to stop a "minority" that was trying to block the goals of the revolution.

"There are weevils eating away at the nation of Egypt," he said, pointing to old regime loyalists he accused of using money to fuel instability and to members of the judiciary who work under the "umbrella" of the courts to "harm the country."

Clashes between his opponents and members of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood erupted in several cities. In the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, anti-Morsi crowds attacked Brotherhood backers coming out of a mosque, raining stones and firecrackers on them. The Brothers held up prayer rugs to protect themselves and the two sides pelted each other with stones and chunks of marble, leaving at least 15 injured. The protesters then stormed a nearby Brotherhood office.

State TV reported that protesters burned offices of the Brotherhood's political arm in the Suez Canal cities of Suez, Ismailia and Port Said, east of Cairo.

In the capital Cairo, security forces pumped volleys of tear gas at thousands of pro-democracy protesters clashing with riot police on streets several blocks from Tahrir Square and in front of the nearby parliament building.

Tens of thousands of activists massed in Tahrir itself, denouncing Morsi and chanting "Leave, leave" and "Morsi is Mubarak ... Revolution everywhere." Many of them represented Egypt's upper-class, liberal elite, which have largely stayed out of protests in past months but were prominent in the streets during the anti-Mubarak uprising that began Jan. 25, 2011.

"We are in a state of revolution. He is crazy of he thinks he can go back to one-man rule," one protester, Sara Khalili, said of Morsi.

"If the Brotherhood's slogan is 'Islam is the solution' ours is 'submission is not the solution'," said Khalili, a mass communications professor at the American University in Cairo. "God does not call for submission to another man's will."

Frustration had been growing for months with Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president, who came to office in June. Critics say the Muslim Brotherhood, from which he hails, has been moving to monopolize power and that he has done little to tackle mounting economic problems and continuing insecurity, much less carry out deeper reforms.

Morsi's supporters, in turn, say he has faced constant push-back from Mubarak loyalists and from the courts, where loyalists have a strong presence. The courts have been considering a string of lawsuits demanding the dissolution of the Islamist-dominated assembly writing the next constitution. The courts already dissolved a previous version of the assembly and the Brotherhood-led lower house of parliament.

Morsi made his move Thursday, at a time when he was bolstered by U.S. and international praise over his mediating of a cease-fire ending a week of battles between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Only a day earlier, Morsi had met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton just before the truce was announced.

Mustafa Kamel el-Sayyed, a Cairo University political science professor, said Morsi may be confident that the U.S. won't pressure him on his domestic moves. "The U.S. administration is happy to work with an Islamist government (that acts) in accordance with U.S. interests in the region, one of which is definitely the maintaining of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel" and protecting Israel's security.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Friday that Morsi's declarations "raise concern for many Egyptians and for the international community."

The U.S. calls for Egyptians to "resolve their differences over these important issues peacefully and through democratic dialogue," she said.

On Thursday, Morsi unilaterally issued amendments to the interim constitution that made all his decisions immune to judicial review or court orders. He gave similar protection to the constitutional panel and the upper house of parliament, which is dominated by the Brotherhood and also faced possible disbanding by the courts.

Morsi, who holds legislative as well as executive powers, also declared his power to take any steps necessary to prevent "threats to the revolution," public safety or the workings of state institutions. Rights activists warned that the vague ? and unexplained ? wording could give him even greater power than those Mubarak held under emergency laws throughout his rule.

The decree would be in effect until a new constitution is approved and parliamentary elections are held, not expected until the Spring.

The state media described Morsi's decree as a "corrective revolution," and supporters presented the move as the only way to break through the political deadlock preventing the adoption of a new constitution.

Amnesty International said the new powers "trample the rule of law and herald a new era of repression." It said a new "law protecting the revolution" also announced Thursday could provide for detaining people for up to six months without charge.

Prominent Egyptian democracy activist Mohamed ElBaradei called Morsi a "new pharaoh." The president's one-time ally, the April 6 movement, warned that the polarization could bring a "civil war."

One of Morsi's aides, Coptic Christian thinker Samer Marqous, resigned to protest the "undemocratic" decree.

"This is a crime against Egypt and a declaration of the end of January revolution to serve the interest of the Muslim Brotherhood dictatorship," wrote Ibrahim Eissa, chief editor of daily Al-Tahrir. "The revolution is over and the new dictator has killed her."

In front of the presidential palace, Muslim Brotherhood supporters and other Islamists chanted "the people support the president's decree," pumping their fists in the air.

"God will humiliate those who are attacking our president, Mohammed Morsi," said ultraconservative cleric Mohammed Abdel-Maksoud. "Whoever insults the sultan, God humiliates him," he added.

In rival protests in the southern city of Assiut, ultraconservative Islamists of the Salafi tend and former Jihadists outnumbered liberal and leftists, such as the April 6 youth groups. The two sides exchanged insults and briefly scuffled with firsts and stones.

With his decrees, Morsi was playing to widespread discontent with the judiciary. Many ? even Brotherhood opponents ? are troubled by the presence of so many Mubarak era-judges and prosecutors, who they say have failed to strongly enough prosecute the old regime's top officials and security forces for crimes including the killing of protesters.

In his decrees, Morsi fired the controversial prosecutor general and created "revolutionary" judicial bodies to put Mubarak and some of his top aides on trial a second time for protester killings. Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison for failing to stop police from shooting at protesters, but many were angry he was not found guilty of actually ordering the crackdown during the uprising against his rule.

In his speech Friday. Morsi told supporters that his decisions were meant to stop those "taking shelter under judiciary."

He said the courts had been about to disband the upper house of parliament.

"This is minority but they represent a threat to the revolution's goals," he said. "It is my duty, if I see this, to go forward along the path of the revolution and prevent any blockage."

The Food Blogger ? Blog Archive ? Ten Tips For Cooking The ...

Thanksgiving weekend and it?s time to enjoy those mouth-watering Roasted Turkey,Greenbeans casserole (hubby cook the best casserole ever!) ,pumpkin pie,and other yummy food that only mom-knows-what!

Too bad for me because I?m on the other part of the planet right now? and stuck with lots of work and endless talks about exciting drumsticks at Musicians friend instead of Turkey drumstick, and I sure terribly miss my family back in the US.

    Anyway, though it was always hubby who is in charge in preparing our Thanksgiving dinner but I have a few tips here to share that I found online. Take a look;

?1. Choose the right type of turkey for you.
Heritage? Organic? Fresh? Frozen? There are lots of choices out there. A heritage turkey is right for you if you want to try an old-fashioned breed of turkey, often leggier and leaner and more flavorful, and don?t mind paying a little extra for it. If organics are important, you may already have your eye on a turkey raised according to organic standards, and fed organic feed. If you?d prefer a traditional fresh or frozen bird, pick the healthiest-looking one in the weight range you need, and make sure it looks well fed for its size. And, remember, fresh may not necessarily be better than frozen; frozen turkeys are snap-frozen just after butchering.

    2. Figure on 1 to 1 1/2 pounds of turkey per person.
To buy the right size turkey for your party, simply tally up the turkey-eating guests. Add a few pounds on for bones and you?ve got your turkey weight. For example, 8 people will require a 12 to 14-pound turkey.

    3. Cook the turkey on a rack of vegetables.
Create a natural roasting rack for your turkey by layering carrots, onions and celery on the bottom of the roasting pan. Lifting the turkey off the base of the pan helps to increase hot air circulation around the whole bird so that it will get crispy all over. And the vegetables add great flavor to the gravy.

    4. Brining keeps it moist.
Brining is an easy, sure-fire way to a moist and flavorful turkey. A typical brining solution contains water, salt, sugar and a variety of spices and aromatics. Just be sure to follow a trusted recipe so you get the right proportion of each.

    5. Keep the stuffing on the side.
Chances are the Thanksgivings of your childhood featured a stuffing cooked right in the cavity of the turkey. Go ahead and use your family recipe, but we suggest you cook the stuffing in a separate pan. Cooking the stuffing in the turkey can provide fertile ground for the growth of harmful bacteria. In addition, a stuffed turkey will take longer to cook, which could result in drier white meat. Instead, loosely fill the turkey with aromatics such as onions and herbs, and cook the stuffing separately.

    6. To tie or not to tie.
To help ensure that poultry cooks evenly, many professional cooks like to truss their birds, which is just a fancy term for tying them up. While it?s not a necessary step in cooking a terrific turkey, it can be fun to show off your culinary skills at home. Simply tuck the wings of the turkey under the body and tie the legs together with kitchen string to create a tight package.

    7. Rub the turkey with butter or oil.
Before putting it in the oven, make sure the skin of the turkey is as dry as possible, and then rub it all over with butter or oil. For even moister meat, place pats of butter under the skin.

    8. Skip the basting.
Basting means more oven door opening, resulting in temperature fluctuations that can dry out your bird. Instead, keep your turkey moist by brining it or by rubbing it all over with butter or oil.

    9. Invest in a good meat thermometer.
Check for doneness by inserting an instant-read thermometer in the thickest part of the turkey around the thigh, avoiding the bone. At 165 degrees F, it?s done. The turkey will continue to cook as it rests, so the temperature should rise another 10 degrees or so out of the oven.

    10. Give it a rest.To lock in juices, tent your turkey with foil and let it rest for at least 15 to 20 minutes before carving. Be sure you don?t cover the turkey too tightly as you don?t want the bird to steam under the foil.(Source: Food Network)

There you have it! I hope you enjoy the dinner as much as you enjoy the cooking! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!!!!
