UK Police Order Social Nets to Stop Outing Released Child Murderer

Police in the UK have ordered Google, Twitter and Facebook to remove photographs claiming to show the recently released murderer of James Bulger, who was killed in Liverpool 20 years ago. In addition to the injunction that bans the photos, authorities threatened Monday to take legal action -- in the form of fines or even jail time -- against individuals posting photos of the murderer.

A question of accountability: What happens when employees are left in the dark?

Feb. 25, 2013 ? All employees are accountable for something, but very few fully understand exactly what they are accountable for, according to a new study conducted by Wayne Hochwarter, the Jim Moran Professor of Business Administration in Florida State University's College of Business, and research associate Allison Batterton.

The research, which assessed the opinions of more than 750 blue- and white-collar employees across multiple job environments, had a number of objectives. First, the researchers wanted to better understand how many employees simply do not know what is expected of them at work each day. Second, they wanted to get a better idea of what work life was like for those who understood their level of accountability versus those who did not.

Surprisingly, less than 20 percent of employees reported feeling certain they knew what was expected of them at work each day, while the vast majority of workers reported varying levels of accountability ranging from "some" to "complete" ambiguity.

As one respondent said, "I thought I was working on something important ? I guess the boss who fired me didn't think so."

Differences between those who knew what was expected versus those who didn't were considerable.

For example, workers who were uncertain of their accountabilities at work reported:

?60 percent higher levels of mistrust with leadership as it relates to communication.

?50 percent higher levels of overall work frustration.

?45 percent less control regarding the best way to complete their work.

?40 percent higher levels of work overload.

?35 percent fewer work accomplishments to the organization.

?33 percent less social and resource support from one's immediate supervisor.

?33 percent greater likelihood of searching for a new job within the next year.

?25 percent more job neglect (slacking off, slowing down).

These findings cost American organizations hundreds of millions of dollars each year -- in both direct and indirect costs, the researchers said.

"When employees aren't sure what's expected of them, the results simply just cannot be positive, especially when the complexity of work and the pace of change is taken into consideration," Batterton said.

In terms of reasons for the lack of understanding, most employees cite management's failure to be forthcoming and proactively develop communications until a lack of accountability triggers an organizational crisis.

Leaders are becoming more and more accountable as well, which often takes them further from their employees.

"It seems the more that communication is needed, the less likely it is provided -- no wonder so many employees feel completely lost at work these days," Hochwarter said.

The researchers prescribe a four-step approach to dealing with accountability failures.

?Set up a formal communication system using the most current and user-friendly technology, and make sure all employees are able to use it effectively.

?Make employee accountability part of both the supervisor's and employee's performance evaluation.

?Develop informal accountability networks (i.e., buddy system) that allow employees real-time access to information needed to effectively focus attention on tasks considered most important for that particular day (or hour).

?Make accountability proactive rather than reactive.

"Most employees want to do a good job and contribute to their organization," Hochwarter said. "Perhaps it's overly simplistic, but this can only take place when employees know what's expected. Sadly, many do not, and the situation appears to be getting worse rather than better."

Francis Crick's Nobel Prize medal to be auctioned

The family of Francis Crick, one of three men who received the Nobel Prize for discovering DNA structure, announced a plan to auction his 23-carat gold medal. Part of the proceeds are to be offered to research institutions.?

The 1962 Nobel Prize gold medal awarded to Dr. Francis Crick for his work in the discovery of the structure of DNA will be offered by his family in a public auction conducted by Heritage Auctions in New York City on April 10 with a portion of p

Three men who played crucial roles in deciphering?DNA's double helix?in 1953 later received the?Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The family of one of those men, Francis Crick, plans to sell his medal, the accompanying diploma and other items at auction with a portion of the proceeds set to benefit research institutions in the United States and the United Kingdom.

"It had been tucked away for so long," said Kindra Crick, Francis Crick's 36-year-old granddaughter, of the medal. "We really were interested in finding someone who could look after it, and possibly put it on display so it could inspire the next generation of scientists." Francis Crick passed away?in 2004 at the age of 88.?

The value of Nobel gold

There is little precedent for this sale. Nobel medals appear to have changed hands publicly in only a couple of instances. This particular medal, like others made before 1980, is struck in 23-carat gold, and recognizes a particularly high-profile accomplishment in biology, one fundamental to?modern genetics.

The auction house handling the sale, Heritage Auctions, has valued the medal and diploma at $500,000, which is "an educated guestimate," said Sandra Palomino, Heritage Auctions' director of historical manuscripts. Estimates by Heritage's in-house coin experts went as high as $5 million, Palomino said. [See Photos of Crick's Medal & Other Auction Items]

The April auction will also include Crick's award check with his endorsement on the back, the scientist's lab coat, his gardening logs, nautical journals and books. Separately, the family hopes to sell a letter Crick wrote in 1953 to his then-12-year-old son Michael, who is Kindra's father, describing the discovery's meaning. The auction house Christies, which Kindra Crick said is handling the sale, declined to confirm plans to sell this letter.

Out of the box

The medal was not displayed much within Crick's family. Kindra remembers that the Nobel, which she has yet to see herself, was locked in a room with her grandfather's other awards and other family heirlooms after he moved to California at the age of 60. After the scientist's wife, Odile, passed away in 2007, the medal was sequestered in a safe deposit box. Crick's children, including Kindra's father, Michael, attended the award ceremony in 1962, but saw almost nothing of the medal afterward.

Kindra plans to get a look at the medal before the auction.

"My grandfather was not the type of personality to show off," she said. "His conversation tended to be on what's next as opposed to reminiscing about the past ? I guess he always thought there was more to come."

Crick's family hopes to see the medal displayed publicly after its sale; however, Kindra Crick acknowledged that a public auction offered no guarantee a buyer would display the award. But she is optimistic, saying those individuals or institutions with enough interest in science to bid on the medal are also likely to display it publicly. [Creative Genius: The World's Greatest Minds]

Crick's family and Heritage Auctions plan to donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the medal and the other items to The Francis Crick Institute, a medical research institute scheduled to open in London in 2015. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the letter will go to benefit the Salk Institute in California, where Francis Crick studied?consciousness?later in his career, Kindra said.

Sixty years later

On Feb. 28, 1953, according to legend, Crick and his colleague James Watson announced that they had discovered the "secret of life" in a pub frequented by other Cambridge University scientists.

This followed Watson's realization that the molecular bonds between the two types of base pairs in DNA ? adenine with thymine and cytosine with guanine ? were identical in shape, suggesting a double helix with complementary halves, Watson recounts in "The Annotated and Illustrated Double Helix" (Simon & Schuster, 2012).

This discovery was the result of a combination of approaches; Watson and Crick built models, trying to determine how the molecules known to make up DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) fit together. Meanwhile, two of their colleagues, Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin, created images by bouncing X-rays off DNA crystals.

One of Franklin's images,?called Photograph 51, provided key evidence of a helical shape.

Crick, Watson and Wilkins received the Nobel Prize in 1962. Franklin did not because she passed away in 1958, and the Nobel Prize is not awarded posthumously.

Form means function

In the years prior to this discovery, scientists knew of the existence of DNA (a type of molecule known as a nucleic acid), but not what it looked like or its true function. They also knew genes carried traits from generation to generation, but many scientists believed genes to be made of proteins, said Jan Witkowski, executive director of the Banbury Center at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York.

The discovery of the structure of DNA was key to understanding the molecule's function as the code for genes. Watson and Crick understood this, but when they described their discovery in a paper in the journal Nature in April 1953, they wrote coyly of the implications: "It has not escaped our notice that the specific pairing we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for genetic material." [Code of Life: Photos of DNA Structures]

However, in the letter to 12-year-old Michael, dated March 19, 1953, Crick drew a diagram spelling out the scientists' theory of how DNA replicated: the double helix and its base-pair rungs separated to create templates for new strands.

"In other words, we think we have found the basic copying mechanism by which life comes from life," Crick wrote to his son. The scientists signed the letter, which appears in "The Annotated and Illustrated Double Helix," "lots of love, Daddy."

A geneticist himself, Witkowski lists the discovery of the structure of DNA as one of the three most pivotal accomplishments in biology, along with Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection and?Gregor Mendel's principles of inheritance. ?

"Of course, it wasn't so much what each discovery was in itself, but what avenues it opened up and what it led on to," said Witkowski, who with Alexander Gann, edited the "Annotated and Illustrated Double Helix."

Syria rebels fight for police academy near Aleppo

BEIRUT (AP) ? Rebels backed by captured tanks launched a fresh offensive on a government complex housing a police academy near the northern city of Aleppo on Sunday, while the government hit back with airstrikes to try to protect the strategic installation, activists said.

If rebels capture the complex on the outskirts of Aleppo, it would mark another setback for President Bashar Assad. In recent weeks, his regime has lost control of key infrastructure in the northeast including a hydroelectric dam, a major oil field and two army bases along the road linking Aleppo with the airport to its east.

Rebels also have been hitting the heart of Damascus with occasional mortars shells or bombings, posing a stiff challenge to the regime in its seat of power.

On Saturday, opposition fighters in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour overran a military post believed to have once been the site of a partly built nuclear reactor that Israeli warplanes bombed in 2007.

A year after the strike, the U.N. nuclear watchdog determined that the destroyed building's size and structure fit specifications of a nuclear reactor. Syria never stated the purpose of the site known as Al-Kibar.

After the bombing, the regime carted away all the debris from the destroyed building and equipment from the two standing structures, analysts said, adding that the rebels were unlikely to have found any weapons in the abandoned complex.

There were troops in the area until this weekend. It was not clear what the site was being used for most recently.

"It's more or less a shell because the Syrians decided to remove everything inside the buildings," said Mustafa Alani, an analyst with the Gulf Research Center in Geneva. "I don't think there's anything left really of any value for the rebels."

Separately, rebels have been trying for months to storm the government complex west of Aleppo in the suburb of Khan al-Asal, according to Rami Abdul-Rahman, the director of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The facility also includes several smaller army outposts charged with protecting the police academy inside the compound.

The SANA state news agency said regime troops repelled the rebel attack on the police academy, inflicting heavy losses and destroying four armored vehicles and three cars fitted with machine guns. There was no word on government casualties.

Aleppo has been the scene of some of the heaviest fighting of Syria's nearly 2-year-old conflict.

In July, rebels launched an offensive on the city, the country's largest and one-time commercial capital, and quickly seized several neighborhoods. The battle has since devolved into a bloody stalemate, with heavy street fighting that has left whole districts in ruins and forced thousands to flee.

A key focus for the rebels as they try to capture the city is Aleppo's international airport, which they have been attacking for weeks.

Regime forces also fired an apparent ground-to-ground missile Sunday on the town of Tal Rifat, some 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Aleppo, the Observatory said. There was no immediate word on casualties.

The report follows similar strikes last week on impoverished rebel-held Aleppo neighborhoods that killed at least 60 people.

Also on Sunday, prominent Syrian comedian Yassin Bakoush was killed in Damascus after apparently being caught in the crossfire between rebels and government troops.

Bakoush, 75, was known for playing characters that were likeable but naive and dim-witted. SANA said he is survived by11 children.

SANA said Yassin Bakoush was killed by a rebel mortar round that landed on his car in the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in southern Damascus, which has seen heavy fighting in recent months. However, the anti-regime Observatory said Bakoush was killed when a rocket-propelled grenade launched by government forces slammed into his car.

French freelance photographer Olivier Voisin, who was wounded on Thursday in Syria and taken to Turkey for treatment, died of his wounds at an Istanbul hospital, the French Foreign Ministry said Sunday.

Voisin is the second French journalist this year to be killed while reporting on the civil war, which has proven to be one of the most dangerous conflicts for reporters to cover.

In Lebanon, two people were killed by Syrian shells and gunfire that landed on Lebanese territory near the border.

The state-run National News Agency in Lebanon said a man was killed and his brother was wounded by shells that slammed into the town of al-Hisheh in the Wadi Khaled area of the north, while another man was killed by gunfire in the area of al-Buqaiaa.

The deaths added to tensions in the area which has seen an escalation of violence in recent days. The civil war in Syria has increasingly spilled over into Lebanon with almost daily reports of cross-border shelling or gunfire in border areas.

The United Nations says at least 70,000 people have been killed since the uprising against Assad's authoritarian rule began nearly two years ago.

Efforts to stop the bloodshed so far have failed, leaving the international community at a loss of how to end the civil war.

A senior opposition leader said Sunday that his umbrella group has suspended participation in meetings with its Western backers and their Arab allies because of their indifference over the regime's attacks on the Syrian people in Aleppo and other cities.

"Assad has reached the stage of real genocide amid Arab silence and we renounce that," George Sabra, vice president of the Syrian National Coalition, said in Cairo after meeting Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby.

On Friday, the Coalition said its leaders would not travel to Washington or Moscow for any talks to protest the international community's "silence over crimes committed by the regime." It also said opposition leaders would boycott a meeting next month in Rome of the Friends of Syria, which includes the United States and its European allies.

In Washington, the State Department condemned rocket attacks on Aleppo, saying in a statement late Saturday the strikes are the "latest demonstrations of the Syrian regime's ruthlessness and its lack of compassion for the Syrian people it claims to represent."

Afghan president to expel U.S. special forces from key province

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai has given U.S. special forces two weeks to leave a key battleground province after accusations that Afghans working for them tortured and killed innocent people, the president's spokesman said on Sunday.

The decision by Karzai could further complicate negotiations between the United States and Afghanistan over the presence of Americans troops in the country once most NATO forces leave by the end of 2014.

Speaking at a news conference in Kabul, Karzai's spokesman Aimal Faizi said villagers in Wardak province had lodged a series of complaints about operations conducted by U.S. special forces and a group of Afghans working with them.

The decision was reached at a Sunday meeting of the Afghan National Security Council, chaired by Karzai, Faizi said.

"The Ministry of Defense was assigned to make sure all U.S. special forces are out of the province within two weeks," he said.

A statement from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan said: "US Forces Afghanistan is aware of the reporting of Presidential spokesman Aimal Faizi's comments today. We take all allegations of misconduct seriously and go to great lengths to determine the facts surrounding them.

"But until we have had a chance to speak with senior Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan officials about this issue, we are not in a position to comment further."

Sunday's announcement came days after Karzai issued a decree banning all Afghan security forces from using NATO air strikes in residential areas, in a bid to curb civilian casualties.

That was in response to an operation in Kunar targeting four Taliban members which resulted in the deaths of ten civilians, including five children, during an air strike.

Karzai has long warned his Western backers that the killing of civilians could sap support for the foreign troops in the country and fuel the insurgency.

(The story changes first paragraph, removes spokesman's quote from paragraph 6 to make clear accusations were made against Afghans working for U.S. special forces, not against members of U.S. special forces)

Democratic Korea warns commander of U.S. troops in south Korea

According to a Feb. 23 report published by Korean Central News Agency, an important leader of the Democratic People?s Republic of Korea (DPRK) military told the commander of U.S. troops occupying south Korea to stop plans for the provocative military exercises that are scheduled for March 1.

The report states that Pak Rim Su, chief of the Panmunjom Mission of the Korean People's Army, sent the following message to James D. Sherman, commander of the U.S. forces in south Korea, on Feb. 23:

?As you know, a grave situation where a war may break out any moment prevails in Korea due to the brigandish moves of the U.S. and its allied forces to isolate and stifle the DPRK, taking issue with its just satellite launch and underground nuclear test for protecting its sovereignty.

?If your side ignites a war of aggression by staging the reckless joint military exercises Key Resolve and Foal Eagle again under the cover of ?defensive and annual ones? at this dangerous time, from that moment your fate will be hung by a thread with every hour.

?You had better bear in mind that those igniting a war are destined to meet a miserable destruction while a great victory is in store for the guardians of justice.?

PFT: 49ers GM: All option on table for Alex Smith

Andy ReidAP

Perhaps the most shocking sight at this year?s NFL Scouting Combine happened Thursday, and it had nothing to do with anyone?s 40-yard dash time.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid took the podium. Without a team-issued hat on his head. And he talked. And he cracked jokes. And he looked, for a moment, like a man refreshed.

Reid never did these interviews at the Combine when he ran the Eagles, so the simple glimpse of him stood as news. But he spoke at length about a number of Chiefs-related topics, tried to quell any Nick Foles speculation, and even drew a few laughs along the way.

?He?s not available,? Reid said when asked if he?d try to acquire the Eagles quarterback. ?You just had Howie (Roseman, the Eagles general manager) up here, so I think you know that. . . . Listen, Nick is the property of the Philadelphia Eagles, and I think they like him.?

Reid might like him too, but if he?s unable to put his hands to his former Eagles pick, he?s going to have to find one elsewhere. Like every coach, he talked about ?the process,? and ?evaluating? and didn?t offer much in the way of specifics.

While admitting this year?s class of draftable quarterbacks might not measure up to last year?s (?but I would tell you that there are some good players in there?), Reid also acknowledged the Chiefs might be open to trading the top pick in the draft.

?We?re just not going to give it away, so we?d have to see what people throw our way,? he said. ?It?s a pretty valuable pick I?d say.?

But the best, and most surprising line might have been when he was asked about his introduction to the AFC West.

?I?ll tell you it?s a pretty good division,? he said, setting up his punch line. ?The Broncos, I?m sure they?re probably looking for a quarterback, too. . . . He?s (Peyton Manning) a pretty good player. I think we know that.?

While it?s not exactly Henny Youngman, it was a peek of personality that Reid hadn?t shown at all in Indianapolis, and not terribly often during 14 years in Philadelphia.

Things won?t stay this relaxed for Reid in Kansas City forever (the reality that he inherited a 2-14 team and doesn?t have a quarterback will come crashing down soon enough), but for a day he looked like a man enjoying a new challenge.

And after a long stay in Philadelphia that included plenty of ups and downs of the personal and professional variety, it looked like one he needed.

Texas executes man who lit ex-girlfriend on fire

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) -- A man convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend by dousing her with gasoline and setting her on fire was executed in Texas on Thursday after the U.S. Supreme Court refused his final appeal.

Carl Blue, 48, was condemned to die for attacking Carmen Richards-Sanders at her apartment in Bryan, about 100 miles northwest of Houston, in September 1994. He also tossed gasoline on a man in the apartment, but the man survived and testified against Blue.

Blue claimed it was a prank gone wrong, but prosecutors said it was an intentional attack sparked by jealously.

In his final statement, Blue greeted his victim's daughter, Terrella Richards, as she entered the death chamber viewing area by telling her he loved her.

"I never meant to hurt your mama," Blue said while strapped to a gurney. "If I could change that, I would. ... I hope you can forgive me."

He then told his parents, watching from an adjacent room, that he loved them and acknowledged he had done something wrong. He said he was "paying the ultimate justice. ... It may be crooked justice but I forgive those people."

He later added: "Cowboy up. I'm fixin' to ride, and Jesus is my vehicle."

Blue took about a dozen breaths as the lethal drug began taking effect. He said he could "feel it," then slipped into unconsciousness before being pronounced dead at 6:56 p.m.

Richards declined to take questions after the execution, but said her journey was over. "I can move on with my life," she said. "My journey has ended today."

Prosecutors said Blue walked seven miles from his home to a convenience store, and had been drinking malt liquor and smoking crack behind the store, when he bought 50 cents' worth of gasoline and put in a "Big Gulp" cup.

Court records said he waited outside Richards-Sanders' apartment, then when she opened the door, rushed in and told her: "I told you I was going to get you." He then doused Richards-Sanders and set her ablaze.

When Blue discovered Larence Williams at the apartment, he threw what was left of the gasoline on Williams, setting him on fire.

"He had only one true love in his life ... and here she was with another guy," recalled John Quinn, the lead defense attorney at Blue's 1995 trial.

Hours after the attack, Blue turned himself in to police.

"When I went to knock, she snatched the door open and had a cigarette," Blue told police in a tape-recorded statement played at his trial. "I wasted gas on both of them. And she caught on fire, and he caught on fire, and I took off running ... I was scared, man."

Shane Phelps, a prosecutor at Blue's punishment trial, said Richards-Sanders was trying to start her life over after she and Blue broke up months earlier, "and Carl wasn't part of that, and that was a problem for Carl."

In appeals this week, Blue's attorney, Michael Charlton, argued that it was a conflict of interest for one of Quinn's co-counsels to represent him in appeals because he likely wouldn't contend his previous work was deficient. The conflict "resulted in valuable and worthwhile claims not being presented to any court," Charlton said.

But the Texas Attorney General's office said the federal appeals were meritless because Blue had waived his right to a different lawyer, negating the conflict claim.

Five years after Blue's conviction, his death sentence was among about half a dozen in Texas overturned by a federal judge who ruled it was improper for a former state prison psychologist to testify that the black man's race could indicate a propensity for violence. But Blue again was sentenced to die at a second punishment trial in 2001.

His was the first execution this year in the nation's most active death penalty state. At least 11 other prisoners are scheduled for lethal injection in the coming months in Texas, which executed 15 inmates last year.

A night of Cocktail, Caring and Comedy at Temple Israel

With pink highlights and a bright flowered clip in her hair, Fiona Epstein welcomed the crowd of women to the Cocktails, Caring and Comedy event featuring Cory Kahaney at Temple Israel of Sharon.

?Be happy it?s Adar,? Epstein announced to the audience of more than 200 women on Wednesday, Feb. 13. Earlier that day she had participated in Wacky Hair Wednesday. ?(The month of) Adar provides an opportunity to bring happiness to people.?

The celebratory holiday of Purim falls in the month of Adar. Purim commemorates the time when the Jewish people who were living in Persia were saved from death.?

As part of the festive celebrations of Adar and Purim, the Jewish Community Centers of Greater Boston, the Combined Jewish Philanthropies and a number of area temples and synagogues organized a night of laughter, food and charity. The event even had a signature drink: Vashtini (vodka, apple juice, pomegranate juice and club soda).?

?Just imagine sisterhoods from all of the local synagogues ? reformed, conservative and orthodox - coming together as one,? Sharon resident and JCC South event chairwoman Beth Lappen said. ?We are crossing the boundaries of synagogues walls. This is my favorite event of the year.?

The annual gathering of women from the area synagogues started years ago as a women?s Seder but evolved to remain ?relevant and responsive and inclusive,? Lappen said.?

?So (the Seder) morphed into a dynamic, vibrant, interactive and Hamish (familiar, cozy) social event bring synagogue sisterhoods under one roof,? Lappen said.

As women entered Temple Israel, boxes near the front door became filled with items for New Hope, an Attleboro-based charity that helps victims of domestic and sexual violence.

Epstein, vice president of the JCC Boston, said New Hope was selected because of its local presence and to keep with the tradition of giving during Purim. Attendees were asked to bring pajamas and slippers.

?You can see what you are giving and that is a tangible thing for what people can bring,? Epstein said of the donation. ?It also stops people in their tracks. It isn?t about enjoyment for oneself, but enjoyment for others.?

Ruth Zakarin, vice president of operations for New Hope, said the donation would be given to families in its two confidential shelters.

In addition to running various programs for victims of domestic and sexual assault, the nonprofit helps women that ?need to flee abuse? through its shelters.

?Yesterday we welcomed a new family: a woman and her 2-year-old child,? she said. They have with literally the clothes on their backs.?

On Valentine?s Day a party will be held at the shelter where the new pajama?s and slippers will be given to the residents, the new family included, Zakarin said.

In addition to helping others, the annual Purim program is a sort of reunion. Lappen said.

?They are laughing. They are making connections that they haven?t made in years, she paused. ?They play a massive game of Jewish geography and that is the best. There is such a warmth in the event. It really is one big community.?

As the event moved toward the comedy portion of the night, Lappen proudly listed off the co-sponsors for the Cocktails, Caring and Comedy: Temple Israel Sisterhood, Temple Sinai Sharon, Temple Beth Abraham Canton, Congregation Sha'aray Shalom in Hingham

Temple Adath in Sharon, Temple Kol Tikvah in Sharon, Ahavath Torah Congregation, Temple Beth Emunah in Brocton, Temple Chayai Shalom in Easton, Temple Beth Am of Randolph, Temple Israel of Sharon, Heights Crossing Assisted Living in Brocton, Mayyim Hayyim, Hadassah and Temple Beth Sholom in Hull.

When taking the stage, comedian Corey Kahaney made an observation.

?I was listening to the list of temples and synagogues in the area,? she laughed. ?I don?t think there are enough temples and synagogues in your area.?

Kahaney has appeared on the ?Late Show with David Letterman,? ?the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,? ?the Joy Behar Show? and ?NBC?s Last Comic Standing.?

JCC South Purim festivities continue on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 10 a.m. at Temple Kol Tikvah, 9 Dunbar St. in Sharon. The event is open to kids ages 2 and up and will feature Violet the Clown. Cost is $15 per family and registration can be made at bostonjcc.org/southpurim.

For more information on Jewish Community Centers of Greater Boston visit bostonjcc.org/Locations/South.aspx. To learn more about New Hope visit www.new-hope.org.

Epstein has been working with JCC for years and encourages others to get involved.

?We do great work here.? she said. ?We?ve connected hundreds and hundreds of families together and give them an opportunity to meet one another and be relevant.?

Rockets make 6-player trade with Kings

(AP) ? The Houston Rockets acquired No. 5 pick Thomas Robinson and forwards Francisco Garcia and Tyler Honeycutt from Sacramento on Wednesday for forward Patrick Patterson, center Cole Aldrich and point guard Toney Douglas.

Also Wednesday, the Rockets reached an agreement to send forward Marcus Morris to Phoenix for a future second-round pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because that trade had not been announced, pending league approval.

Patterson, Aldrich and Douglas walked out of the Toyota Center just as Houston was starting its game against Oklahoma City, on the eve of the trading deadline. The Rockets came into the game holding the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference and the moves were unexpected.

The short-handed Rockets heard the news only 20 minutes before tipoff.

"It was definitely the weirdest game I've ever played in," said Houston forward Chandler Parsons. "It was hard to focus, it was hard to block (out) four friends leaving."

Houston rallied from 14 points down to beat the Thunder 122-119.

"A lot of distractions before the game," said James Harden, who scored a career-high 46 points. "I just rallied the guys together and told them to focus in on every play. It was going to be a tough game for us, but we had to really focus in on the small, detailed things. The guys did a phenomenal job."

The 6-foot-9 Patterson had started 38 games for Houston this season and was the Rockets' fourth-leading scorer, averaging 11.6 points. Douglas was acquired in the offseason in a trade with New York and he played in 49 games backing up Jeremy Lin. The 6-11 Aldrich, acquired in the James Harden trade with Oklahoma City just before the season, averaged 1.7 points in 30 games for Houston this season.

Sacramento had high hopes for the 6-10 Robinson, but he's disappointed so far, averaging only 4.8 points and 4.7 rebounds in 16 minutes per game. His most notable NBA moment might have come when he elbowed Detroit's Jonas Jerebko in the neck during a game in November. Robinson was ejected and suspended two games by the NBA.

Kings general manager Geoff Petrie had hinted that he'd only make minor moves before the trade deadline because of the pending purchase agreement that could move the franchise to Seattle next season.

Marcus Morris had played in all but one of Houston's games this season, making 17 starts. He was averaging 8.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. The Suns took Markieff with the 13th pick in 2011 draft and Marcus was right behind him again, going to Houston at No. 14.

Morris was beaming about the thought of joining his twin older brother, Markieff, on the Phoenix roster.

"If I was to be traded, that's where I would want to go," Marcus Morris said outside the Rockets' locker room. "I think Houston knew that. That's all I did was talk about my brother and how happy I was to play with him. I'm excited. That's all I can say."

The Suns entered their game against Golden State with the worst record in the West (18-36), but that didn't seem to matter to Morris.

"It's my first trade," Morris said. "All I kept hearing was, it's a business. It happens. I mean, it does happen. I'm excited to see where my career can go from here."

Suns coach Lindsey Hunter wouldn't talk about the deal specifically, but acknowledged that Phoenix is building for the future.

"We're trying to get better," he said. "We're trying to build a foundation of something that we hope will last."

Tool for reading the minds of mice developed

Feb. 19, 2013 ? Stanford scientists have developed a system for observing real-time brain activity in a live mouse. The device could prove useful in studying new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's.

As the mouse explores the arena, neurons in its brain flash green when it recognizes a familiar spot.

If you want to read a mouse's mind, it takes some fluorescent protein and a tiny microscope implanted in the rodent's head.

Stanford scientists have demonstrated a technique for observing hundreds of neurons firing in the brain of a live mouse, in real time, and have linked that activity to long-term information storage. The unprecedented work could provide a useful tool for studying new therapies for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.

The researchers first used a gene therapy approach to cause the mouse's neurons to express a green fluorescent protein that was engineered to be sensitive to the presence of calcium ions. When a neuron fires, the cell naturally floods with calcium ions. Calcium stimulates the protein, causing the entire cell to fluoresce bright green.

A tiny microscope implanted just above the mouse's hippocampus -- a part of the brain that is critical for spatial and episodic memory -- captures the light of roughly 700 neurons. The microscope is connected to a camera chip, which sends a digital version of the image to a computer screen.

The computer then displays near real-time video of the mouse's brain activity as a mouse runs around a small enclosure, which the researchers call an arena.

The neuronal firings look like tiny green fireworks, randomly bursting against a black background, but the scientists have deciphered clear patterns in the chaos.

"We can literally figure out where the mouse is in the arena by looking at these lights," said Mark Schnitzer, an associate professor of biology and of applied physics and the senior author on the paper, recently published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

When a mouse is scratching at the wall in a certain area of the arena, a specific neuron will fire and flash green. When the mouse scampers to a different area, the light from the first neuron fades and a new cell sparks up.

"The hippocampus is very sensitive to where the animal is in its environment, and different cells respond to different parts of the arena," Schnitzer said. "Imagine walking around your office. Some of the neurons in your hippocampus light up when you're near your desk, and others fire when you're near your chair. This is how your brain makes a representative map of a space."

The group has found that a mouse's neurons fire in the same patterns even when a month has passed between experiments. "The ability to come back and observe the same cells is very important for studying progressive brain diseases," Schnitzer said.

For example, if a particular neuron in a test mouse stops functioning, as a result of normal neuronal death or a neurodegenerative disease, researchers could apply an experimental therapeutic agent and then expose the mouse to the same stimuli to see if the neuron's function returns.

Although the technology can't be used on humans, mouse models are a common starting point for new therapies for human neurodegenerative diseases, and Schnitzer believes the system could be a very useful tool in evaluating pre-clinical research.

The work was published Feb. 10 in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience. The researchers have formed a company to manufacture and sell the device.

Nic Cage Whiteboard Somehow Makes Nic Cage More Insane

Sure, you probably already have photos of Nicolas Cage hanging in most if not every room of your home. But Nic is so much more than a single shot can convey, and even a hundred of these approximations is an insult to the depth of his character. The Nicolas Cage Hairstyle Whiteboard, however, finally offers the flexibility you need to feel like Nicolas Cage is right there in the room with you—watching, furrowing his brow, and screaming incoherently at only the most appropriate times. Ken Burns footage blocked: Judge says no to NYC

Ken Burns blocked: New York officials sued to get access to the original interviews shot for Ken Burns' latest documentary, 'Central Park 5', but a judge ruled against the city on Tuesday.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald L. Ellis said the city had failed to show him a concern so compelling to trump the "precious rights of freedom of speech and the press" when it last fall requested outtakes and other materials from the film "The Central Park Five."

The request was connected to a $250 million federal lawsuit filed by the men against the city nine years ago after their sentences were vacated. The attack on a 28-year-old investment banker occurred in April 1989, when she was found in the park after being beaten and raped while jogging. She was in a coma for 12 days and was left with permanent damage. The men were exonerated after a man already jailed for other crimes confessed, and DNA evidence supported his claim.

Ellis rejected arguments by the city that Florentine Films and filmmakers?Ken?Burns, David McMahon and Sarah?Burns?were not independent journalists entitled to reporter's privilege.

He said Florentine had "established its independence in the making of the film" and may claim the privilege.

He also said the city had failed to adequately address the requirements of relevance and significance of the materials it sought and had failed to demonstrate they are not available from another source.

City attorney Celeste Koeleveld said city lawyers were "disappointed and reviewing our options."

"While journalistic privilege under the law is very important, we firmly believe it did not apply here. This film is a one-sided advocacy piece that depicts the plaintiffs' version of events as undisputed fact. It is our view that we should be able to view the complete interviews, not just those portions that the filmmakers chose to include," the lawyer said in a statement.

Burns?said that he and his co-filmmakers are "grateful for this important decision."

"This adds a layer of important protection to journalists and filmmakers everywhere," he said.

His lawyer, John Siegal, called it a "marvelous decision for the media industry generally and documentary filmmakers in particular."

In a declaration submitted to the court in November,?Burns?called the city's position "deeply disturbing for documentarians and reporters ? and the public at large" and "a troubling attempt to expand the power and role of city government and to reduce the legal protection afforded reporters."

He said the filmmakers made statements after the documentary was made urging the city to settle with the plaintiffs and "close this painful chapter in their lives and the life of the city."

But he said the opinion resulted from the reporting for the film.

"By stating this view, we have not forfeited our journalistic integrity any more than any author or columnist or filmmaker who espouses a point-of-view about a story he or she is reporting," he wrote.

HUD / FHA - Minimum Property Requirements - Zillow Real Estate ...

What are the minimum property requirements for an FHA loan on a HUD house? ?We are close to closing on a house that is deemed HUD-Insured but has a split in a pipe that is just going to an outside spigot, nowhere else. ?So all the faucets, all the toilets, the entire inside has no pipe issues. ?The heat and electricity has been on all winter; and everything was winterized except apparently this spigot line. ?It is less than a $5 fix however per HUD, they sell "as-is" and will not make any repairs, and the buyer is un-authorized to touch the place until after closing. ?

Is this small little, irrelevant kink going to throw a wrench in the whole thing? ?I'm hoping their will be some type of exception made for something so small when it doesn't affect the livability of the house since you can turn that entire line off with a valve and not affect anything else.

Stranded cruise ship passengers share horror stories

After five days without power in the Gulf of Mexico, the more than 4,200 people aboard the Carnival Triumph returned home to the U.S., with many of them telling their horror stories for the first time.

Passengers began to disembark the damaged ship around 10:15 p.m. CT Thursday in Mobile, Ala. The last passenger disembarked the ship at 1 a.m. local time, according to Carnival's Twitter handle.

Passenger Brandi Dorsett was thankful to be home, especially for her mother, who was with her on the ship. Dorsett said she wasn't pleased with the doctor on staff.

"My mother is a diabetic, and they would not even come to the room because she cannot walk the stairs to help her with insulin. She hasn't had insulin in three days," Dorsett said.

Click Here for Photos of the Stranded Ship at Sea

The Carnival Triumph departed Galveston, Texas, last Thursday and lost power Sunday after a fire in the engine room disabled the vessel's propulsion system and knocked out most of its power.

After power went out, passengers texted ABC News that sewage was seeping down the walls from burst plumbing pipes, carpets were wet with urine, and food was in short supply. Reports surfaced of elderly passengers running out of critical heart medicine and others on board squabbling over scarce food.

"It's degrading. Demoralizing, and then they want to insult us by giving us $500," Veronica Arriaga said after disembarking the ship.

Passengers were already being given a full refund for the cruise, transportation expenses and vouchers for another cruise. Carnival Cruise Lines is now boosting that offer to include another $500 per person.

As the ship docked, passengers lined the decks of the Triumph, waving and whistling to those on shore. "Happy V-Day" read a homemade sign made for the Valentine's Day arrival, while another sent a starker message: "The ship's afloat, so is the sewage."

WATCH: Carnival CEO Gerry Cahill Apologizes to Passengers

Some still aboard chanted, "Let me off, let me off!" and "Sweet Home Alabama."

Kendall Jenkins was one of many passengers who were photographed kissing the ground when they exited the ship. Jenkins, like many passengers, created makeshift beds out of lounge chairs on the ship's deck after the raw sewage smell became too much to contend with.

"We kind of camped out by our lifeboat. We would have nightmares about Titanic basically happening," passenger Kendall Jenkins told ABC News Radio.

"I am just so blessed to be back home," she added.

Cruise Ship Newlyweds Won't Be Spending Honeymoon on a Boat

Approximately 100 buses were waiting to take passengers on the next stage of their journey. Passengers had the option to take a bus ride to New Orleans or Galveston, Texas, where the ill-fated ship's voyage began. From there, passengers will take flights home, which Carnival said it would pay for.

Inside the buses, Carnival handed out bags of food that included French fries, chicken nuggets, honey mustard barbecue sauce and apples.

Deborah Knight, 56, decided to stay in Mobile after the arduous journey was over rather than board a bus for a long ride. Her husband Seth drove in from Houston, and they checked in at a downtown Mobile hotel.

"I want a hot shower and a daggum Whataburger," said Knight.

She said she was afraid to eat the food on board and had gotten sick while on the ship.

For 24-year-old Brittany Ferguson of Texas, not knowing how long passengers had to endure their time aboard was the worst part.

"I'm feeling awesome just to see land and buildings," Ferguson said, who was in a white robe given to her on the cruise ship. "The scariest part was just not knowing when we'd get back," she told The Associated Press.

Carnival president and CEO Gerry Cahill praised the ship's crew and told reporters that he was headed on board to apologize directly to its passengers shortly before the Carnival Triumph arrived in Mobile.

"I know the conditions on board were very poor," Cahill said Thursday night. "I know it was very difficult, and I want to apologize again for subjecting our guests for that. ... Clearly, we failed in this particular case."

Luckily no one was hurt in the fire that triggered the power outage, but many passengers aboard the 900-foot colossus said they smelled smoke and were living in fear.

"You didn't know if the ship was going to explode, catch back on fire. You know, for a day or so, we didn't see any kind of sign of life. And so that's pretty scary when your out there on the water," Robyn Burgess said.

Carnival's original plan was to tow the damaged ship to Progreso, Mexico, because it was the closest port, but by the time tugboats arrived, the ship had drifted about 90 miles north due to strong currents, putting it nearly equidistant to Mobile, Ala.

Carnival added that it has canceled a dozen planned voyages for the Triumph and acknowledged that the crippled ship had been plagued by other mechanical problems in the weeks before an engine-room fire left it powerless in the Gulf of Mexico.

ABC News' Michael S. James, ABC News Radio and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Could complete darkness cure lazy eye? - Mother Nature Network

Being in the dark may have an upside: It could potentially cure lazy eye, a condition in which one eye has much weaker vision than the other, scientists say.

?

Researchers demonstrated the effect in kittens, but if the results could be replicated in humans, these findings would have implications for the millions of people who suffer from lazy eye, say the researchers who detailed their study on Feb. 14 in the journal Current Biology.

?

Common condition

Up to 4 percent of the population suffers from amblyopia, or lazy eye, which has several causes. For instance, a cataract can block light coming into one eye, and as a result, the brain stops properly processing information from that eye, leading to a lazy eye, said study co-author Kevin Duffy, of the University of Toronto.

?

While children who have a lazy eye can wear a patch to cover the stronger one, forcing the other eye to do more work, it's difficult to make 4- or 5-year-olds keep their patch on all the time, and untreated adults can have serious difficulties seeing for life, Duffy said. [Top 10 Stigmatized Health Disorders]

?

Dark room

Duffy and his colleagues noticed several years ago that kittens with one impaired eye had smaller cells connecting to that eye in the brain, but that putting the animals in the dark seemed to change that trait. Did the darkness actually cure the kittens' "lazy eyes"?

?

To find out, the researchers studied several kittens, keeping one eye shut in each animal for a week and then letting the felines roam for several weeks with both eyes open, effectively creating a lazy eye. Researchers then put the kittens, along with their littermates and moms, into a completely dark room.

?

"When I say dark, I mean really dark," Duffy told LiveScience. "There are zero photons of light. It's not like going and closing your windows or drapes."

?

After 10 days, the kittens emerged from the darkness. Over the course of several weeks, researchers found that the animals were completely cured of their amblyopia.

?

In another experiment, Duffy's team showed that putting the kittens into the dark room immediately after pursing?one eye shut (for a week) prevented lazy eye altogether.

?

Based on other experiments, the researchers believe the darkness made the kitten visual system revert to an earlier stage of development, so that it could reset itself.

?

But before this method could be used in people, scientists would have to figure out how long children would have to remain in the dark, how dark it would need to be and how early in a child's development the treatment would need to occur, he said.

?
