Titans hoping to use injured de Villiers in later stages of CLT20 ? Cricket News Update

South Africa?s limited-overs skipper AB de Villiers will remain with his domestic franchise, the Titans throughout the Champions League T20, as the side is contemplating over using him in the later stages of the esteemed tournament, which kick starts in Centurion tomorrow, October 13, 2012.

The wicketkeeper batsman, who has been forced to keep wickets in all three formats of game, following Mark Boucher?s career ending eye injury, suffered a recurring back injury during the recently concluded ICC World T20 championship in Sri Lanka. He also picked up an ankle injury during the marquee tournament, and is currently undergoing an extensive rehab plan, in a bid to regain full fitness ahead of South Africa?s tour of Australia next month.

The injury has apparently ruled him out of the CLT20, where he was due to turn out for domestic Twenty20 champions, the Titans, but the team management has decided to keep him with the rest of the squad, as his presence in the dressing room will be a real morale booster for the side.

"AB is currently undergoing an extensive back rehabilitation and strengthening program," said Titans coach Matthew Maynard. "He is an extremely valuable player and we hope that we could use him during the later stages of the tournament."

"Even if he doesn't play, having AB in the squad will still be a benefit to us as his experience and his knowledge of the game will certainly rub off onto the rest of the team," Maynard went on to add.

A total of ten teams ? four Indian, two South African, two Australian and two qualifiers ? will compete in the latest edition of the high profile league, jointly owned by the BCCI, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa.

Participating teams have been divided into two groups of five each. Titans have been drawn in Group A, along with Perth Scorchers (Australia), Kolkata Knight Riders (India) and Delhi Daredevils (India). Group B comprises defending champions Mumbai Indians, IPL runner-ups Chennai Super Kings, Big Bash champions Sydney Sixers, South Africa?s Highveld Lions.

Titans will play their tournament opener against Marcus North?s Scorchers, on Saturday, October 13, 2012.
